I like the honesty of his teachings. He didn't pretend that breaking a rear naked choke was easy like a lot of defense videos I watch. Because it really isn't.

Turn your head towards the choker's head and pull the choker's head down towards your chest. It works pretty much everytime to get out of the hold.

First, only get in fights near top tier hospitals. Second, when all else fails, I might try to turn off one way or the other hoping to change that backbend into a side bend. Last ditch, I might try running backwards to slaw into a wall. If you fall, you fall. If it doesn't work, the good news is you won't suffer for very long! :)

In my old judo days one tip was to turn your head toward your opponents hand ( away from the elbow ) ; ideally , you would still have blood flow to the brain through the artery under the least compression & not pass out . Of course , this isn't 100 % , especially during a really hard struggle but you never know how a little thing like that might make a big difference . Great tips , thanks guys !

It depends upon what technique you are actually going to do in order to attempt to get out of the Rear Naked Choke (assuming it has been fully applied in earnest), as to whether you turn your head/chin towards guy's hand or towards the bend in this elbow. Trying to grab his right forearm with one or both your hands (i.e. finger tips) often has a low chance of doing anything (finger tips vs a muscular forearm/arm lock in a "Figure 4 Lock"). Your entire body has to move all at once, together. Put your right palm at his right elbow/tricep and PUSH his forearm over and up to the the left as much as you can, turn your head/chin to your left as you are turning your hips counterclockwise and stepping back and thru w your left foot/leg. Take your left hand as a flat open, fingers tight together knifehand and slide it up along side the left side of your neck. Palm towards your neck. In between your neck and his right wrist/forearm. No matter how difficult it is to do or how painful it is to your neck to do it. DO IT!! Then using the blade of your left hand, you can begin to turn your left hand so blade than palm is pressing on the inside of his right wrist/forearm, and pushing it away from your neck. Ducking your head down as you are turning counter clock wise. Use the power of a long step back w your left leg, turn of hips and torso, ducking down of head and shoulders, pushing on his right elbow/tricep w your right palm, and pushing away from your neck of his wrist/forearm w your left hand, to forcibly free your neck/head from his clutches. If you turn your head the other way, into his right bent elbow, then there's a whole other technique to do. It's not that complicated. You MUST turn your hips and upper body. This is the ONLY way to get into a more favorable position. IF... you do not break free of his choke, and then he has you in a Side Headlock Choke, then there are other things you can now do. But now you are in a better position than you were in a Rear Naked Choke. If it is put on fully and correctly, you have SECONDS to do SOMETHING!! If you don't, then lights out!! If you are in a real life situation with a person who is trying to kill you, then you are DEAD!! You MUST turn, TWIST out of it, no matter how painful or risky. Once you are side ways to him, you can establish a strong stance, then defend against a Side Headlock. There are many techniques against a Side Headlock. Further IF you have him in or about to get him into a finger lock, wrist lock, arm lock or any kind ... then do it!! Take what is presented to you and go with it. Lock him out, knock him out, 2 finger poke to the eyes, instep to the groin. Walk home.

I forget what the OP wrote, as I didn't read it again now. So ..... you got me ????? But what I can read, or what I wrote, I can say that it makes a BIG difference as to whether or not the attacker puts on a Rear Naked Choke CORRECTLY and POWERFULLY, or he does not!! Not many people really know how to put it on correctly, eventhough they think they do. Not to mention how quickly, efficiently, and effectively they can put it on. Many people bungle their attempt. All you need, to defend yourself, is a fraction of an inch and a fraction of a second. If the attacker gives you those, by his lack of skill in putting on choke, then you have a number of different options for an escape. Depending on a number of other factors as well, of course. Your size to his, your stance and body position, his stance and body position, environment, standing, sitting, or laying on ground, etc, etc, etc. Very few people have the training, skill, and experience to put on a Rear Naked Choke fully and strongly in a flash. That is one thing I'm saying. I've had many people put chokes on me and I'm waiting ...... waiting .... waiting .... for "something" to happen. Their muscling it, struggling, twisting around, etc, and nothing. Cuz they don't understand the principles of the choke nor the anatomy of the human body. It really isn't that easy to put on, that quickly, without the person realizing it is coming and he quickly moving, twisting, or something to prevent attacker from putting it on. There are little things you can do to person BEFORE you attempt to put on the choke, which will aid you in putting it on and limiting his ability to react and defend.

I was taught this by my Tae Kwon Do instructor almost 40 years ago. It was taught to NYC cops in the eighties during the PCP epidemic. PCP is basically a horse tranquilizer that people used recreationally. It gives them strength and resistance to pain that they normally wouldn’t have. It’s also one of the reasons NYC cops went to forty caliber ammo from nine millimeter. More knock back power against someone on PCP who might absorb several smaller rounds and keep coming. The technique was called a carotid restraint. Unfortunately the way it was taught to the cops was bad. Put it on, lift the suspect off his feet, and release when he stops kicking. What would happen was airway restriction, panic, and death or brain damage. Excellent advice here.

I tried a similar technique against a 240lb MMA fighter and the first part of pulling own their arms using your body had no effect. He still had choke all the way in. I am pressure testing all known techniques against an MMA fighter with maximum resistance and will publish the results on you tube so we can see with no uncertainly what works and what doesn't.

I first started martial arts training when I was 4 years-old...the earliest memory I have of something I was taught was me in the dojo, and our since _Paul_ taught me by having another student twice my age & more than twice my size to put me in a rear naked choke & he said “now push up with your feet like your jumping as high as you can, then tuck your legs at the knee, with both hands on Justin’s forearm and when your knees hit the mat again pull as hard as you can downward and flip him over your shoulder...”

Something that seems to be overlooked in these 'choke-hold' videos, is the mention of OBSERVING your surroundings, first and foremost at ALL times. Secondly, we should develop our reflexes to the point where, an antagonist doesn't even have the CHANCE of SECURING his arm around your neck. Number one---I NEVER allow myself to be THAT close to 'harm.' It may sound almost fanatic, but even when I go to the grocery store, or, gas station, if some dude is walking somewhat toward me, I make sure to give myself a wider 'berth' between him and me without making it look too obvious. It's a strange world out there these days; ya' can't be TOO careful... Know what I mean? But these techniques ARE good to know. Thanx!

Also, what has come in handy for me, being that I was the victim of few choke holds, is when you can lean forward as to at least somewhat, get the perps feet having less footing, is now, you have more footing. So bulldoze him backwards at that point while he's holding you. You can start to build a momentum and then ram his back into the next nearest hard thing that you can, or to at least make them trip backwards, giving you some opportunity to defend yourself now. I've ram a few dudes bigger than me backwards into a work bench vice at work. I knew what was behind him already, so when he put me in a hold, I focused on getting him into a position to bulldoze him backwards in the vice.

Reminds of a guy I know who’s really really strong and really into the ufc. I had just learned the correct way to apply the rear naked and he told me that he could get out of it. I said not if it’s fully in. No way. He assured me he would definitely break out of it even if I had it fully locked in? So, what was I to do? I had to see this! I tried one last time to convince him of the folly of his belief but he was insistent that I apply the choke fully and he would dazzle all with his incredible escape artist abilities! I suppose it really was one of those, had to be there, situations but, I got behind him, got in position, wrapped my first arm deep around his neck, set the second arm in tight behind his head, dropped my head down and squeezed! Well if you’ve ever done or been on the receiving end of a good rear naked you know that one of two things happened next. He either tapped or went to sleep. He tapped! And he tapped quickly! Took about two seconds! He was coughing and eyes watering already. Wow! He said through his coughs, I guess I can’t get out of it? No Kidding Sherlock. Once a correctly applied rear naked is in, you’re going to sleep 😴

Gravity also helps, very few people can hold on to an average male or female. Jump, be prepared however they may release you right away, or you tumble back with them. So reorient yourself .

This works on a one-on-one situation. But against multiple attackers, forget it. Bite, stab his hands, his legs...but if you focus on one attacker the others will punch you or kick you. Great advice. Great to hear Stephan give credit to fellow Catch wrestler Eric on the finger lace. There is a reason it is called the sleeper hold in Catch or even better the mata leão in BJJ. If it is fully set you will be lucky if you get out. You have a maximum of 8-10 seconds. I have a thick neck so I have less.

Hey that was great ! Could you also do one on the floor? Please! I was rear chocked on the floor number of times in my childhood MMA fighting plays with my shorter but strong neighbor and that was his favourite technique to end the fight as I couldn't figure out how to escape from it being on the floor on my back and with him behind. He has mastered that on me sadly and I never found the way to defend from it.

Quick comment - great video. There is also one more technique that can help if you just manage to do it in time - right before the choking arm is around your neck. Grab the wrist with your opposite hand (in this case with the left one) and proceed to Seoi Nage. But as I said, it would only work with just the right timing and the window of opportunity is really small there. Anyway, thanks for the great video.

Once again great video guys. With such a short time window to react. Those are some great options! Quick question. I've seen non-experienced fighters drop on to their backs hoping to knock the wind out of their attacker. Will the finger wedge still work? Ideally no one should be on the ground with that technique or in it. thx Sensei

Right! The best defense is to avoid the hold. Falling back on the attacker MIGHT work... it all depends on his experience. And if he falls on to a bed of nails. Either way, I would try for the fingers standing on the ground... it's worth a shot!

This is a solid discussion, but almost all BJJ folks still have a sport mentality even when they discuss practical self-defense. First of all, I consider ANY attack targeting the neck as a lethal attack. Losing consciousness on "the street" is GAME OVER. So the attacker just escalated the force spectrum to MAX by attempting it. The RIGHT way to defend any technique is to interrupt it as soon after it begins as possible. There are WAY more good options BEFORE the guy buries a knife in your chest than after! Same with any grappling technique in a NON-sporting context. And remember: chokes are LETHAL ATTACKS. So I totally agree with Mr. Kesting that we want to defeat the RNC before it is set if at all possible. However, there are a host of things I can do in the 10 seconds or more I have if I do not panic and set my chin and neck properly to protect my airway (temporarily...I also agree with that statement) so long as I did not allow my balance to be broken. Also, this is easier if you're taller than the attacker. If you're shorter, that is a big disadvantage once the choke is applied. In short, if I still have my balance and my chin and neck muscles are set, I have a bunch of front-to-back lethal (level of force) tools left in my tool belt. So don't panic! And...as Sensei Ando said...don't give up!

Well Yeah!!! A Rear Naked Choke, in real life, is usually used by bigger, taller, and stronger men on shorter men or women, NOT the other way around. Usually if a shorter person wants to do it, they have to jump on the other person's back, and wrap their legs around their middle and lock their feet at the front. Then apply the choke. Then fall down with the person when he goes down.

I love this video, and I love this technique. One of the best to use on bad guys. It presented perfectly, by you two great people and martial artists. I will add however, that in the stage of the during, you might be able to use a sweep, or a sweep and throw combo, but that's only in the during stage. If the choke is all the way in, you want to buy yourself as much time possible, and to do your best to get out. That's reminds me of Hollywood bullshit, in The Karate Kid (the first): John Kreese, Choked Johnny Lawrence, for over 4 minutes I think. And he was red in the face, but didn't past out, story telling purpose, freed by Mr. Miyagi, and was totally fine. In real life, he would have passed out long ago, as evidence in this video, Stephen held 4 seconds being choked.

So... a couple of weeks ago, the day after I got my blue belt, and the first time in a bar in don't even know of how long because I don't drink or go to bars, and long story short, this guy was trying to fight my brother who was trying to get away, I rnc'ed his ass to sleep and left. In truth, I ended up more injured them he. He went home that night eventually without injury, I stressed the muscles in my lower back from grabbing him so hard and bumping out his hips. It wouldn't have mattered if it were my professor himself, there was no getting out of it. The power of that move when done right..... it's amazing. I think he was unconscious in less than 3 second.

I've only escaped a rn a handful of times and it's basically while it's IN motion and not locked. That's in bjj class, usually if they get it locked down I've only got the hand once because they will bury it making it hard. On the street, different story sloppy placement allows for it way more easily.

slamming the rear naked choker violently backwards smashing them into a wall etc is effective as well. also at the very end with one arm around your neck those fingers are still available to set up a throw.

I saw someone use a cigarette lighter under the attacker's forearm. That ended the rear chokehold pretty quickly. Still need self defense for whatever comes next since the lighter is a very close-range weapon.

Or a wood screw on your waistband where you can easily get to it and stick tip of wood screw into the tip of elbow will cause extreme pain on attacker and run picking up anything as weapon just in case attacker follows

He did say if they get you in the hold you'll "go to sleep." It should be made clear you'll be unconscious not sleeping. "Sleeping" sounds nice, unconscious means as the follow up blows land you could die from them. Not wake up.

I showed your video during training. 20 people gathering around one phone. Our sensei wanted to test it immediately. We tried this defense and we all experienced, that it is best to get a single finger for a lock joint to weaken the choke lock (if possible). Against strong attackers it was nearly impossible. But often enough it worked. We added this to our training routine. Thanks for the idea!

While this can be effective. Whole body movements are preferred in life threatening situations. The ability to grasp a finger can be near impossible when the adrenal response kicks in. Also if the rear naked choked is preformed with the second hand under (made into a fist) it completely negates this tactic. Catching a choke before it happens is also a chance response. It is good to have a reaction based tactic driven in the brain, so that the second you feel an arm wrap around your neck, you immediately react with whole body movements. From my own personal experience, grabbing the arm & a deep squat should be the first response. After that rotate at a 90 degree angle towards the choking arm, placing your outer leg behind theirs. Using the deep stance (and the leg behind them as a prop), you can make them trip backwards them with light pressure from the outside arm. While doing this you can strike the groin with the inside arm. This will lead to them falling over your leg. It's safer to go ahead and secure a full mount at this point (fall with them), so that the job can be finished. The groin strike can damage them, but during situations like this, you don't want them getting back up and hurting you. It's one fluent motion and has to be repeated over and over until it is an immediate reaction. I learned this while taking BJJ, and I highly recommend you look into studying the art. A primarily striking art (I took Shotokan Karate) and BJJ is a great combination for self defense.

AGREED!! TRUE!! Also, IF the person attacking you actually applies the Rear Naked Choke correctly and tightly and strongly, his right should will be pressed into your back/back of head, the attacker's head will be in tight to your left side of your head and tight to his arms, and his left hand (or fist as I think you are saying) will be lower down on the back of his skull. Solidly based there by his own head in tight. The chances of you reaching back, if you even have time to do so before you black out, and being able to grab his fingers and pull his left hand/arm from behind your head is very slim indeed. Once you try, he will just strengthen his resolve to choke you out even more so. YES!! "Whole body movements...." i.e. turn/twist your body, so you at least get into a side position.

@@AndoMierzwa The problem is, in reality, IF the guy has any idea what he is doing in apply a Rear Naked Choke (i.e. he isn't just some smuck) he isn't simply going to just stand there and let you grab his fingers and pull his left hand from behind your head. He's going to fight you, make a fist, pull his left hand further down the back of your head, tighten the application of the choke, arch you back, pull u back, twist you down, etc.. Seems very unlikely to me, low %.

Any Rear Choke is a potential Death hold, 100% correct do not turn your back on an opponent, but if you do find yourself in a rear choke then attacking the fingers may work ? But attacking the groin area is a much better option, if the attacker is stronger and hand and finger strength is greater or the attackers hands are in a fist then grabbing the fingers will not work or maybe not always be available. Attacking the groin area is always an available better option as it is completely unprotected. The initial pull down on the attackers arms is also paramount, as the attacker will think you are trying to release the "Choke" and will pull the attackers body closer to you, before you attack the "Groin" area repeatedly causing the attacker to move their body away to protect themselves, so you can then drop either shoulder and turning your body to get the release from the rear choke as was shown in the video. ( This works try it and see, remember attackers do not like to be attacked) !

Excellent video. It’s actually a little scary that people with no respect are picking up techniques that are not only very effective, but are so effective and easy to do that even seasoned martial artists have a hard time countering or escaping it. Years ago people were doing the knock out game and it’d just be a nightmare if they did a choke out game. As much as I enjoy MMA, I’m not exactly sure if it’s a good idea if a bunch of punks can easily learn techniques that can kill a person.
