I DO NOT UNDERSTAND (know how to) actually PERFORM the DELETE ONCE the tTunes has highlighted the duplicate files. NO ONE EVER FOLLOWS THROUGH AND TELLS YOU THAT!! CAN YOU PLEASE???? @@islandantoinette For my laptop (Microsoft product) I too have been searching and have only found that paid products have this feature. They allow you to select, the earliest file, the latest file, the most high fidelity file, the smallest file, an mp3 file, the track and album and name, etc. but you you have to pay. I haven't found one yet. To delete duplicates, do as is shown in the video by Jaime Wagner, and if you have a newer version, like version 10, see all your duplicates (all of them) go to file/library/duplicate files. when you select this, it will show you the duplicate files in name order, that is, the name of the song. Then with your cursor, high light one file that you want to delete, but do not delete both of them, keep one. Then delete it, and then it will ask you if you want it sent to the recycle bin or the trash. You decide. it will disappear, leaving that other file there. It is laborious but you can do ten or 30 songs in a row by holding down the control key and clicking and highlighting the next file that you want to delete. Continue until you are done. Do a page view at a time, if you wish. Ways to determine what file that you have, is to view, by adding to the header Kind, Time of purchase, Comments (if you have any), album, and location. put the track and album id next to each other, so that you can verify that the album id and the tracks are the same and then verify that your album is the same. This way, as Jaime said. Unfortunately, you have to keep going slowly until you are done. One way to do this in chunks is to make a smart playlist of all your music. then click on the file size to say 100 or 500 etc, this way you can work on 500 files at a time in one folder. As soon as you delete those that are dups and you have kept your desired file. click another smart playlist and quickly comeback to this special smart playlist, this will be faster to undo the Show Duplicates. and it will refill to 500 files. If you don't have many dups in 500, select 1,000 or 5,000. until you get a page worth. repeat until done. hopefully before next year (as in my case)! I have 1,000s, and 1,000s. Good luck.

****[ excuse my typos, I am very tired. I am editing this five hours after I made this comment below. I learned that there is an additional way, on a p,c to show your duplicate files. Jaime's video showed how to view all duplicate songs - this is what I have known for years. A second method is to First hold your SHIFT KEY down, keep it down as you go to Files/Library/SHOW EXACT DUPLICATE ITEMS. The function name changes from SHOW DUPLICATE ITEMS to EXACT DUPLICATE ITEMS, when you hold the Shift key down. The first method shows you all duplicates-remember it does not hold one file in reserve, so you can not delete all of what you see because you'll delete your originals. This second method shows you a smaller set of ONLY THOSE FILES THAT ARE EXACT TO EACH OTHER in every way. I did a test on a 3,000 song smart playlist. I got I got 38 duplicates in method 1, i got 6 duplicates in method 2. I put a phase in the Description column that I added to the view. I put that on the 6 EXACT DUPLICATE ITEMS option with the shift key down. After examining this and the regular show duplicates and the entire 3,000 file, I noticed that method 2 again, does not keep any song in reserve, so you see every duplicate that exits. I noticed that if any duplicate name is from a different album with the same name but with "box set" or "remixed" for example, that does not show up in the EXACT file view. I noticed that for all duplicates, anything different in that file does not show up in the EXACT file list. If the disc 1 of 4 is not the same of the other 2 of 4, it is not an EXACT duplicate. If it is from a different albums, the file is not considered and EXACT DUPLICATE. Method 2 requires that we select the files that we want to delete by inspection, so hold down the Shift key and click to high light each file in the EXACT dup list that you want to delete. Remember, you are leaving one of the original files in the EXACT file so you have it left. I found this holding the Shift Key down on this article: **samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp#DeDupe** So I recommend using the SHIFT KEY DOWN to get the SHOW EXACT dups and in that smaller set delete what you want to delete. This is not perfect, but it goes a long way after years of occasionally researching this problem by using only iTunes. I'll post this in my other responses so that will know. Good luck everyone 5/8/2020 12:16 am ]*** Yes, and this shows every duplicate, it doesn't hold back one in reserve that is not shown. So you can not delete them all. One needs to highlight the one that you want to keep. So far I only see that paid apps have this feature. if it is free, usually you can only delete a few tens or hundreds, so you are forced to buy.

In itunes 12.10.7.3 there is a column to the right of song name with a "cloud" icon; that's the "iCloud Download" icon. Duplicates have a "cloud with line through it" icon indicating duplicate. You can sort on it to line up the duplicates, shift-click to highlight and delete.

It is causing lots of difficulty, because this desired method is important, and we want to find a solution, I thought this was a solution, until I reviewed the video several times to assure myself that it was wrong. I have used this feature for many years. Until I realized many years ago that you can from the start import iTunes with an mp3 format, I had many with an AAC format for years. That I've spent time converting them into mp3, so I can put them on a memory stick and play my iTunes-owned music in the car, and then having to delete the many duplicate AAC files. It is a pleasure to have multiple playlists, and have them on a USB drive and not have to touch that drive for 15 days of vacation on car trips because the mp3 allows you some freedom of using your phone for that and for reduced data coverage.

2 things Jamie if you view the number of duplicates before and after the "show Duplicates" the number of copies are the same so I tend to agree with Adam that the originals will be deleted also. 2 If you delete the wrong copy all playlists that contain it will have to have them re added. Stephanie's idea of using the date created or even compare to the date modified will prevent you from taking out the original, but still a pain in the lower region! I think you have a good idea though!

By showing all duplicates, it shows you exactly every item that is a duplicate, it does not show you all duplicates except one of them (so there isn't one hidden that will be kept after delete all, YOU WILL iN FACT DELETE ALL - which is what is misleading. Mike Schumacher did exactly as you asked, but you should have pointed out that you need to only highlight the files that you want to delete, so that one of your show sets is kept as a final file. So it is not a question of Mike having to be careful, it is that he needs to be careful of videos like this that are not correct. I am not throwing rocks, I am just explaining what is correct. on an Apple, I've seen that there is a feature that shows you exactly only the extra duplicates and untaGS one of the files to be kept. I recommend that you redo your video, becase it is a mind field that will cause extra pain to everyone who does what you suggested. Thanks for listening to me. I was looking for a short cut that may or may not exist, that will show all dups except one. I haven't seem that in iTuenes yet. Thanks for posting.

This is going to delete both the original and the Duplicate Song. As you can see both are being selected in that screen. This is fine if you only have a few duplicates but if you have a lot this could be very tedious. If you want to delete just the duplicates you can right click on the name sort tab and add the "sort by date added" tab. Once you sort this way you can select all duplicates and delete in mass.

Again, make sure you keep the actual files. Then, go to Files --> Import and import the top-level folder under which all your music files are contained. Done!

Nervously doing this right now after finding the menu selection was no longer there. It worked pretty well. I still have some mad duplication there. HOWEVER you have fixed one of my biggest problems. Thank you for your advice! The problem that have is that I have 56.9Gb of music files on my windows laptop. I use iTunes. I have 3 smart playlists. However iTunes creates duplicate files in a folder called 'playlist' and a subfolder for each of the 3 playlists. So instead of the smart playlists being pointers to the actual mp3 files it actually copies the file. The result is that I have 1.2Gb of duplicate mp3s. Note that standard playlists do not create duplicates. I wonder if this is mess of my own making or did Apple iTunes just do it without my help. Now following your method the playlist is still there, but the duplicate directory is not. This has saved 1.2Gb immediately.

Good luck everyone 5/8/2020 12:16 am ]***

Good luck everyone 5/8/2020 12:16 am ]*** Hi Marc, I've mentioned to Jaime, to day that his method is not correct. He needs to update or delete this video and keep this chain because some have good comments. Others have commented to him this same horror that you went through. in the past months/years. He does't seem to acknowledge that his instructions are not correct. I hope he takes action with my direct request that I made today.

it doesn't seem to support song names in Asian languages.
