Very helpful! We are remodeling a 10x10.5 foot kitchen. Our kitchen is not open concept - it’s a separate room. Would you recommend putting some cabinets (upper & lower) on the wall opposite the sink & dishwasher? We do have a sliding door to the deck on the wall opposite the fridge & range.

Hi Monica, every kitchen is so unique with hookups located in different areas. Technically yes, you can absolute utilize the entire room for cabinet storage. If it's a separate room I'd just make sure I am not just sitting base and wall cabinets along the wall as it can make your space look so overtaken. Try to break it up with a nice design element and get creative!! Thanks for tuning in!

@@kerstincobb6110 I do have a question for you. If you were to put an island that runs parallel to the cabinets on the sink side, how much space would you recommend between the island and the cabinets on the sink side, and also between the fridge side and the island. Hope the question made sense. Thanks in advance!
@TheMaterialBar
3 жыл бұрын
@@joshuasmith1215 Hey Joshua makes total sense! According to most counties building codes you only need 36" of clearance. In reality that is way too little to have a comfortable flow. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) did lots of studies on this and they recommend for a single cook to have a 42" walk way and for multiple cooks to have a 48" walk way. Usually a 42" walkway is comfortable (if your space allows for it!) and I do recommend adding as much space as you can in front of your refrigerator. Most refrigerators stick out quite far. Check the overall depth of your refrigerator and if you can have a clearance of at least 39" from the actual front of the doors you are good to go. In the end it all depends on your space and how much you have to work with though. I hope this helps!

Amazing tips, thank you so much. Is there anywhere else to fit the microwave and have a nice hood on top of the range?
@TheMaterialBar
3 жыл бұрын
I have more and more clients looking at base microwave drawers. The most popular one is the one by sharpe! I usually am not a fan of using a Micro Vent over the stove so the micro drawers are a great solution. I also like to sit them inside of a tall unit with a tilt up door. We didn't have this option in this simple 10x10 layout but it's something to think about. Take care!

What are all the moldings you mentioned?
@TheMaterialBar
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, thanks for watching. The most basic moldings used in a standard kitchen design are the toe kick skin, the 1/4 round, the scribe molding and a crown. In the frameless cabinet world we typically use a crown starter plus the crown detail and stack the top molding. If you google these individually they should all come up with images and give you a good idea of what they look like. I hope this helps, thanks!

My kitchen is shy of 8ft height. 92 inches would you recommend a 30” or 36”height upper cabinets?
@TheMaterialBar
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Juana, thanks for tuning in!! If you're at a top ceiling height of 92" the wall cabinet height depends on the look you're going for. You typically hang cabinets at 54" AFF (Above finished floor) which will leave you with 38" of space. This could fit a 36" with filler some trim to run straight into the ceiling. If you're going for a modern contemporary look, a lot of time we're not worried about touching the ceiling and sometimes even prefer smaller but way wider wall cabinets. Hope this helps and excited for your new kitchen!!

@TheMaterialBar
4 жыл бұрын
Awww I've been through my challenges with 2020! But if you purchase it nowadays, it comes with technical support and they can log onto your computer to see where the problem is. You can only run 2020 on Windows, Mac is not applicable. There are some other programs that people use like ProKitchen. It all depends if you need it to price out cabinets, 2020 and ProKitchens has supplier catalogs that includes pricing. This means I can draw a kitchen and then pull the quote. I still think 2020 is the best. I work with several designers that don't care about the quote and they just draw in Auto CAD. I hope this helps!

I have an existing builders grade kitchen. Where do I find paneling for the exposed sides of the cabinets and toe kickers?
@TheMaterialBar

That's a tough one Arzu....Unless you can contact the original builder and ask for the brand of the cabinets and then see who sells them, I wouldn't know. It's easier to add on items if you end up painting the entire kitchen. Good luck!

@5610winston

10x10? Jeez! I don't have that kind of mansion. Never even THINK about putting a 12-inch depth cabinet above your fridge! You can't reach the cabinet over the fridge, and you'll have so much clutter on top of the fridge (because you can't reach the cabinet) that you won't be able to open it without first clearing the fridge top. And ALWAYS take cabinets to the ceiling. Better to have the clutter that invariably collects there hidden behind doors. Also, cooking residue and trapped dust will tend to collect on the cabinet tops you can't reach.
@TheMaterialBar

Yes you are very right about the Refer cabinet. Although in our industry we sometimes work on a budget or with builders & real estate investors where we need simple designs and save cost. That's when things like this come into play. Also it's very common in the kitchen & bath industry to compare 10x10 layouts, it's a standard layout to compare costs etc. Thanks for tuning in!

There is no such thing as too much lighting. Set can lights or equivalent no more than 36 inches apart over the edge of the countertops, and under cabinet lights at every prep and clean-up area. A single central boob light just won't do it.
