A parity bit is used for error detection. There are two types of parity bit: even parity and odd parity.
In even parity you will have even number of 1's in the given bit combination. For example for the binary number representation 11100100 there are even number of 1's (4) so its parity is even. Similarly for the odd parity, there will be odd number of 1's in the given binary representation (00110111).
