I agree that ANY recording of any instrument or vocal or whatever will bring out every little noise that you don't hear in live environments. It is unreal what you think you recorded as to what actually gets recorded. Also, watch out for lighting. That can emit noise that pickups in instruments will pickup. Dimmers are mostly a no-go. Use ground lift adapters and direct boxes if you have hum.

Hi Chris, I'm a new subscriber. I have had Studio One for a few years now (version 5) and find your videos so clear and easy to follow. Joe Gilder is very good but you seem to hit the items that even he glosses over for those of us struggling to pick up even the basics. But I am wanting to understand more about gain staging, and as it is related to levels which you have covered before, but can you do a video specifically related to the importance of gain staging across the whole recording process? I have reviewed what I think are all of your videos and can't see one devoted to just that subject. Thank you.

Great! Okay I will do my best to help. This topic really does depend on the song you’re working on. If drums are involved things will process differently than a minimal mix.. I aim for -18 RMS when recording. Obviously a background vocal shouldn’t be as loud as the lead vocal (generally) so there are proportions involved. I don’t have exact numbers because again it depends on the style of music you’re in.. The lead vocal, kick drum, and snare drum typically have the most impact on the song so I keep the faders at 0… background vocals will be anywhere from -6 to -10 on their faders.. Guitars, Keys, and other melodic instruments will be at least -3 or -6.. on our most recent music I had our vocals bus at +3 and the “music” bus at “-3” Bass Guitar is usually set by ear. The moment I feel like the bass guitar sounds great I know that must mean it’s too loud 😂 so set the bass so it sounds good and then drop the fader by -3db.. Also! Set your volume knob for your monitors or headphones to as low as possible and listen to your mix.. if all you hear is the vocal then you should probably turn up the music.. if all you hear is snare and a vocal then you are probably missing those guitars and kick.. the “low volume” trick is definitely the best way to remove your own bias on a mix These numbers most likely will mean nothing to most but I hope that gives you enough to go on for now. I am no master mixer just hoping to make things sound good 😅

I had a pretty nasty noise floor but it turned out to be my workstation charger under the desk causing it. I'll definitely look into Helix soon. The level setting was very helpful, thanks

Those transformer boxes from other electronics are pretty nasty with pickups and cables. Glad you found the issue!

Hey Chris, thanks for the content that you put out it's much appreciated. Just a thought for future vids could you do a split screen so that yours is shrunken to the bottom and the other showing what you're actually doing blown out to full screen. Cheers

Will do! I actually just ordered a new MacBook yesterday. Mine was struggling to record the screen with a high resolution (that’s why everything looks pixelated/blurry) The new laptop should be much better for screen capture and I’ll definitely enlarge the screen going forward 😁
