Did this on my Mazda 6 2016. So far , no warning lights and no overall driving issues. Had the Battery Management System Malfunction and the I-eloop warning display on the instrument cluster upon start ups intermittently. Probably from the limited usage of the car. I have the proper battery installed and tested the battery to be good. Did several resets and still the warning lights would appear. I wanted to avoid the "Replace the Capacitor" route as others would suggest since I pretty much wanted to get rid of this I-stop feature. Hope this "hack" holds up

Love these solutions. I read a forum where people had written to Mazda (and others) to change the stop/start system so that you can opt in, as opposed to having to opt out each time you drive it. They said "no". Apparently this is driven by Euro Greenie policies, where in some countries it's mandatory. If you're the sort of person that gets a new vehicle every 5 minutes (like a lot of people seem to) it doesn't matter - but as someone who keeps vehicles for 10+ years, this stuff effects longevity and adds to running costs. I have actually seen a Golf Diesel with stop/start FFS.

Unfortunately green policies seem to get stricter every single year. It might produce better readings on a test in a lab, but in the real world over 10 years of driving it's just costing more in fuel and resources to maintain these vehicles. As you said this might only suit people replacing their car every 5 minutes. But overall these vehicles don't last as long and need to be replaced sooner, leading to the consumption of more resources. This whole green thing, like everything else in the world, is really just about the money. Under the guise of saving the planet so they can reach into people's wallets. At least we have these small workarounds for now.

@@showwhite7320 I believe this stop/start crap is a lame way car makers are trying to meet government mandated mileage requirements by having the consumer pay for a marginally effective and potentially dangerous system which people who have it say it was next to useless for saving fuel and most likely leads to increased wear and tear on the starter, battery, and alternator which the consumer would ultimately have to pay to get fixed/replaced. Consider how many extra resources are required to manufacture, install, maintain, and repair/replace these systems which negates any "green" advantages they might offer in the first place. Yes, your fix did work on my CX5 - THANKS - the (expletive) i-stop had been annoying me for years and Mazda just said you can't turn it off so learn to live with it... BTW, the switch is a warning device that activates when the bonnet/hood is not fully closed, the master warning light will stay on and the -stop light will flash. The manual just says take the car to your Mazda Service Centre to locate and "fix" the problem. It took a bit of Googleing to find out what the problem might be, not the most important warning device that car can have, a warning "BEEP" to say the car didn't lock would have saved me the loss of a few items when I thought the car had locked while I was walking away from it, my previous car would go loudly nuts if it didn't lock on command...

⚠️ Disabling the start/stop function by bypassing the open hood sensor disables other functions as well. When the sensors signal that the hood is open, the car goes into a kind of safe mode to allow the mechanic to do his work and also to prevent injuries. So in addition to disabling start/stop, the turn signals will not flash when locking the doors and the hood will not jump up in case of a pedestrian accident, and maybe some other functions will be disabled.

This feature was introduced to get a better EPA test result, but in real world driving for most it doesn't actually save you any fuel, just destroys the starter motor. I went down the path of automating the switching off of I-stop after each restart. This can be done with about $40 dollars in hardware. 2 x Sumitomo plugs to piggy back into wiring loom, a DPDT relay, 85 ohm resistor, fuse tap & an air bag light timer relay. This is easily configured to switch off I-stop a few seconds after starting car + can be removed without trace.

@@paviaaPS3 Interesting. When it was time to renew the battery on my Subaru XV the starter battery was twice as much for start/stop. It is the same for Mazda 2 cars in Sweden. Is your car petrol or diesel?
@paviaaPS3

@@gummansgubbe6225 petrol, i dont Think its bigger, but keep in mind you always need a bigger battery in order for the car to operate with engine off. Also many new cars use regenerative braking, meaning that all lost kinetic energy is stored on the battery to furthers cut down emissions on cars. Take for instance Mazda 2 with I-eloop, it has a small battery compared to the normal Mazda 2 also with start stop, but the I loop system stores kinetic energy much faster on a capacitor, and this car also uses start stop. I think the battery size it has is 55 A with 560 cca much smaller than the standard 65 A battery

Is this a newer model? Just bought a 2nd hand 2019 Mazda 3, it has the buttons for on/off but you gotta press it every time you get in the car. Would get a new Mazda for my wife but she hates the I-stop feature.

With my 2012/2013 CX-5 you don't need an offset screwdriver, just a straight one from behind, may be on the slightest angle but easy to get good strong bite on the screw. Thank God no more retched faulty amber I-Stop function warning symbol carry on 😅😅

@@davidhusband5022 If you regularly stop at lights for long periods it might be ok. For me, I go to my first set of lights each day, the car hasnt warmed up yet, and the lights are only red for 2 minutes, so it is a pain for me (or was a pain until I removed the hood sensor). Mazda i-stop, no thanks.

Will this work on my 2010 mazda3 that has the 2 batteries? Had them replaced about 4 years ago which they are not cheap and now istop doesn't work and istop light keeps flashing orange. And will it stop istop from flashing? Thanks

I'm not 100% sure as the earliest car I've done this to is a 2013. I've seen a lot of verification comments up to about 2022. If your car has iStop it's worth seeing if the switch is there and then you can try it if you like. It's easily reversible as you can see from the video.

That's strange as this has worked on so many makes, models and years. If the light is flashing that might indicate a different issue is present. Was the light already flashing before you tried this trick? A quick google search suggests it could be something else affecting iStop like your battery not charging properly. Maybe have a look at the battery or charging before you get stuck?

@@gobikrishnan9827 yeah unfortunately there is probably a battery issue present. Maybe have it looked at to see if it's the battery or alternator and go from there. Definitely don't want to get stuck with a dead battery.

Does it affect the awd?
@calvinlester3070
4 жыл бұрын
My car is only front wheel drive, but I don't see how this would affect awd. It's apparently something put there to prevent istop kicking in when mechanics are doing tests. So even if you close the bonnet, until you turn the car off again istop won't activate. If it affected the awd system that would be very bad and I can't imagine mazda would do something like that.

As I refitted this switch I noticed the engine didnt stop. Pressed the istop button a long time, got some beeps and it started stopping again. So I opened the bonnet(with the switch fitted), started the engine and closed it. The stop function is off now and it survives restarts of the engine.🎉

Nope. Reset during the night. If it is similar to the Individual setting (eco, comfort, sport,sport+,individual) it resets after around 4 hours with the engine off.

I'm not sure as I've personally never seen this issue. A quick google search suggests this could be a battery warning so iStop won't enable. I'd suggest you check to see if any other lights come on as well and try to find the source of the issue first.

If its a 17 it's probable on its original battery ( jap writing on it is a clue) they last 6 -7 years. If your istop is on all the time your stop start probably isn't working. Reset stop start ( KZitem it piece of piss) or get a battery test done.

The deep cycle battery is double the price of a normal battery. So, the extra $250 you pay on the cost of a battery every 3 years, is equal to or more than the cost of the fuel saving, depending on how much driving you do & the type of driving you do, city or country.
