I have a 1895 carbine, took it apart with the safety in the wrong position. Could not figure it out until I watched your video. Thanks a million.

Good one, an often overlooked aspect of stripping. It's amazing how influential the spring tension is on bolt lift. I modified a carcano m41 (shortened the spring) and it made a world of difference. Making sure l had a spare just in case! Thanks again.

I don't have a Mauser mate but I have a Winchester model 54 and the bolt looks quite like a Mauser, wonder if I can get a replacement spring for mine. Very informative video, many thanks.

How do you disassemble if the safety is gone. The safety fell off and I ordered a new one but I see you have to lock it in the cocked position to disassemble the 1895.

Hi Chris, what is the starting condition of the bolt? I'm assuming the safety flag has broken off the top of the shroud or else if the whole shroud was missing, the bolt would already be disassembled. Does the bolt still operate as normal, cocks / fires / recock etc? This would suggest the safety position is in the "fire position".

The bolt operates normally. It was my grandfathers gun that was converted to a hunting rifle. The shroud is still in place. Rifle functions and fires just no safety. Thank you for replying.

Well if you can not get a grip on what remains of the safety flag, then you might have to braze a handle onto it so that it can be rotated into the safety position. A gunsmith would have it solved pretty quickly I believe if it becomes too difficult, and then could install your replacement part. Good luck mate and please come back with how the problem was solved for readers to learn.

Any advice if the safety won’t open after assembly. As I was putting bolt back together the safety flipped to fire and it slid into place and now it won’t go into safety.

You need to cock the bolt, but this time you will need to run the part that engages the sear on the edge of a bench. You are effectively pulling the cocking piece out the back of the bolt enough for you to flip the safety back vertically. I'm hoping I am correct in assuming what your problem is though.

@@practicalnottactical I’ll give it a try, don’t wanna mess up the metal bolt by it slamming forward though

@@practicalnottactical I got it, had to push down on where the safety is to get it to line up with where the cutout is for the safety, got it and assembled it right, works awesomely now

How would one check headspace on a mauser? I’m looking at a Chilean Mauser and want to make sure I’m not buying one with an issue. Any recommendations are welcomed.

You would need a no-go gauge or take it to a gunsmith to be checked. When using a no-go gauge be sure to remove the extractor from the bolt.
