@MegaMilez
Ай бұрын
@@BillRupp-h4x I've had a total of 15 before, and I had to fully change the water twice a day to maintain. My setup would prevent that (mainly from the swirl filter) - though, as you know 10 ducks is a lot of poop, so you'd likely have to rinse out the swirl filter daily. So, yes it would still work. The average pump/filter setup will not work and would also clog, I agree.

Not a new owner, but I’m one of the folks that uses a kiddie pool and dumps it out every so often. But, encountering your video has me considering a filter (and maybe bubble aeration to keep algae down) two quick questions… 1. I know nothing about pond filters… why do you need the DIY Swirl Filter AND the store bought Laguna 2000? 2. I use a pond heater during the winter, do you run your filter and pump during the winter also?
@MegaMilez
8 ай бұрын
1. The swirl filter collects the larger material and prevents it from clogging the system. Also, without the swirl filter the water would not be able to stay clean. 2. I use a small deicer when necessary and run the system 24/7/365. Though the heat does seem to make things pretty gross.

That is tough, but not impossible! Depending on what you mean by "nearby electricity", I personally run a 100ft extension cord for everything. Been using this exact one for years with zero issues amzn.to/4bzXQjo Otherwise, you'll just have to get a larger kiddie pool (not inflatable as it won't last). Something like this amzn.to/4dTDhzI you can dump out and refill - though I'd suggest creating a drainage system or even installing a drain plug to prevent the run from turning into a swamp over a few changes.

Hey man, thanks for making all these videos! I've come across a few of your previous videos now while researching a backyard wildlife pond with a waterfall, and we want to get some ducks and allow them in it as well. It sounds like you have to drain the swirl tank every couple of weeks? I was really hoping to go much longer than that. I'm planning an inground pond that will probably be 2000+ gal, we want to put a bunch of plants in there so we will need to ensure we pick stuff ducks won't eat but those should help to clean the water a little. I was thinking of using a large trash can for a swirl filter and am hoping the bigger size container and more space between the intake and the outlet will allow me to go longer without cleaning. I plan to have the trash can swirl filter overflow into a downpipe that goes to the bottom of a DIY 20, maybe 40-gallon lava rock biofilter. We were hoping to get 4 ducks so hopefully the larger pond and filter will be enough to keep me from having to clean the filters every couple of weeks... every couple of months was my hope! I guess frequent cleanings won't be too bad as long as I can figure out a way to hide the garbage can while keeping the clean-out spigot accessible. I've been thinking maybe I should just get a wet/dry bucket head vacuum that is solely for vacuuming out the swirl filter so I can bury the swirl filter to hide it easier... but I guess that trades off cleaning convenience for looks and I've already warned my partner that they will need to help me figure out how to hide the garbage can haha. If you have any suggestions for having to clean less often, or for building an in-ground pond that we hope will attract various wildlife, I'd love to hear it! Thanks again for your videos!
@MegaMilez
Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Having that much water will automatically require less cleaning, unless you plan on having a lot of ducks. The way I have the swirl filter setup, it takes all of 5 minutes to remove the lid, drain, spray out, and close up. I'd worry about doing lava rocks as eventually that will need to be cleaned out as well as duck poo builds up. In addition, if you plan on doing a garbage can, you'll have to figure out the proper flow rates as to not have it simply overflow - or seal it and create a pressure system like mine. I'd strongly advise just having whatever swirl container have the drain at the bottom with a hose on the outside leading away to drain it where you'd like. It just makes life easy when you are cleaning. In terms of my maintenance/your reference point, I have approx a 150-175 gal system with two ducks and I will either fully drain and clean the system/pool (20mins), partial water change (15 mins) or swirl filter spray out (5 mins) every 1 to 1.5 weeks depending on their water. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to create a system that extended drain intervals while making maintenance super easy and this is what I ended up with. Before I had this setup, it would take me over an hour to clean their pool out and it was a total disaster. Another alternative is to try and make an entire aquaponics setup - but I'd imagine it could be rather difficult due to the load ducks put on any system. That said, a swirl filter will for sure be an asset, along with the size of your planned system.

I tried this swirl filter but with a pool pump. The barrel is squeezing in and the pump won't stay primed. Is your swirl filter barrel lower then your pond level?
@MegaMilez
2 ай бұрын
Same height - you can see in this video and the updated one how it is setup. I'm not sure what you mean by the barrel is squeezing in? Did you use a different drum? And also not sure how your pump won't stay primed as it should be submerged in water?
@adammcanany1986
2 ай бұрын
I believe my pump could be too powerful. It is for an above ground pool. I used a blue barrel for my swirl filter. It will actually begin to collapse when the pump is turned on. Also the swirl filter line will flow back to the pond and overflow it and empty the barrel when it's not running. I did not follow the video exactly and uses the parts I already had.
@MegaMilez
2 ай бұрын
@@adammcanany1986 I'm sorry, it just doesn't make sense about the barrel collapsing when the pump is flowing. This is because it would actually pressurize the barrel - not depressurize. In addition, only the lid would be prone to collapsing from suction, as the barrel itself is very thick and sturdy. The only thing that would make sense here is you have your pump pulling from the barrel/swirl filter rather than the pool itself (and then sending it to the swirl filter) - though unlikely as most pumps are submersible with one outlet. Really not sure I can assist as I don't know your setup. I'd suggest following the videos for best results if you have the means to.

We have 6 Muscovy and 2 Pekins so we picked up a 300 gallon stock tank for them. It's recessed so they can basically just walk into it. For filtration we start with a Laguna 2000GPH pump, Laguna 4000GPH filter (bio & foam filters and UV light), Tetra waterfall, small separate pump to circulate water even more, Microbe-Lift for algae and "sludge" (duck crap lol). The filters need to be cleaned every week, replaced once or twice a year depending on how they hold up, in the summer (110+ degree temps) water is drained every month, come fall to spring every 3 months or so. There is also an auto-leveler installed since evaporation is a big deal here. The ducks love it and it's been going strong in the current configuration for about 3 years. Cheers!

Sounds like a nice setup! Me personally, I drain their water each week or a partial every other week - mainly because a lot of their waste is liquid that won't be caught by any filter, so I don't like the idea of them drinking that. I only have to rinse out the swirl filter, rarely take apart and clean the pressure filter, and clean out the in pond all in one filter (that I have in there mainly for water feature/light). I am going to order some of the Microb-Lift/Algaway you mentioned, going to give that a shot - would be nice to not have to scrub the algae all the time!

If that won't work you'll need to get a hard plastic pool you can tip over like this: amzn.to/4dTDhzI - though I'd recommend creating a drainage system to prevent a swampy run. Possibly even adding a drain plug in the pool itself.

I think the most difficult part of doing that for a duck application is getting the flow right so it wont overflow and wont clog.

Heads up, these are broken: "Laguna Pressure-flo 2000" "Power Strip (this one supposedly has a lot of safety built in)". Reposted because I think my first comment got flagged because I included the links.

Congrats! Lol luckily they are actually really clean animals but just poop endlessly. Once you get a good setup they will love you for it.

2 1 year old mallards (1 male 1 female) and 2 female 5 week old jumbo pekins. These new babies are awesome, but they are poop machines.

Sorry, well... it's a filtration system, it filters the water. ;) If you're asking about the swirl filter, it is a type of filtration to remove large particulate matter. You can search online for how it works.
