If the glue used to bond the original Tolex is contact cement, sanding isnt necessary at all. Dried contact cement can be "reactivated" by simply reapplication of a new coat of adhesive. The new adhesive "activates" the old adhesive on the wood surface, This applies to contact cement from a can that is rolled or brushed on for application.

Aaaah! I like Peavey more and more every day! :o) I played a great Fender valve amp, yellow cloth, chrome chassis, all valve, tag board assembly, sounded the mutts nuts. Then I found the Peavey name on the back. I was actually in shock - They now make amps the way Fender should be doing it. This thing was brand new and sounded like the best vintage Fender - and I've played a few!

Nice job, this is pretty much exactly how I recover cabs too - the removal of the old glue is required to ensure you get a good clean bond, plus the old glue would cause lumps under the tolex if left. I use petrol and a wallpaper scraper to get the excess glue off, then finish with an electrical sander. I also use a sander for the corners, but a router would indeed be quicker (I just don't have one). My current recover head cab (JCA100) is getting done in the same cream levant you've used.

Removal of dried contact cement by sanding with an orbital type sander is an expensive task due to the glue "loading" or gumming up the sandpaper. A better but more time and labor intensive method is to use lacquer thinner. A wide blade putty knifeis used to mechanically remove the old adhesive. Use gloves and proper ventilation, no open flame or smoking either is recommended. Any questions? Hit me up, I have been repairing, building, and designing speaker cabs and amp racks since 1980.

Stew Mac sells a brush on adhesive. I prefer it. I have read people using a water based adhesive from lowes or home depot. The original adhesive used in the 50's was melted on a stove and that too is available and is probably the best thing to use, however, over soaking adhesive on cloth will show through the cloth. The 3m stuff is ok but is soft in my opinion and flexes under the tolex. Its not a hard adhesion. With the amp heating up like a stove its gonna be even more flexible and gummy.

Nice job. lol carefull with that router. Snag yer sack and it's all over. I am recovering a 5150 combo in Blonde tolex to compliment the vibro king. Going to use a water soluble adhesive that brushes on. Get it anywhere. i usually clamp a pressure plate into all the angles of say a Fender cab as it has a ton of 90 degree angles and the typical adhesive doesnt hold it in those tight angles. I have even used thin layer of flooring adhesive in the angles of these things.

If anyone wants to experiment with a different color of tolex covering on their amp, it's a simple matter to make a duplicate wooden box for your amp so that you can always put your amp back into the original box if your new tolex experiment doesn't work out.
