Hi adobo, you warm up the engine to make the oil less viscous (thick) before draining it out so more can be removed. The reason we smear a little new oil on the o ring seal of the new filter is to prevent the filter from leaking. You can also fill the filter with new oil before installing if your filter is mounted on the bottom of your engine etc.. Great content, your really helping people who want to be able to fix their own bikes or just further their knowledge.

Thank you! Someone who knows something. Pre-filling the filter can also reduce the time your engine is running without oil pressure after an oil change. Some people also say it's to soak the paper so it's not damaged by the sudden rush of oil on first start up but idk about that
@Andrew-sv3ck

Running the engine first makes sure all metal shavings in the oil (very important for Italian bikes since they suck) are suspended and drain with the oil. Otherwise they can fail to drain out and stay in there for the new batch of oil.
@AChubbyWombat

This 100%. If not, many particles will have settled to the bottom of crevices where they won't come out. Not doing this won't immediately cause problems, but it is best practice. Also hot oil drains faster.

This. Not running the engine before draining the oil essentially guarantees your new filter will be clogged in the first 100miles. Rendering it useless when all that dirty oil goes through the filter’s bypass all season. Very bad for the engine’s longevity

Well, old engine oil actually does get thinner when it heats up, because what prevents it from getting thinner are flow improving additives. Since the degradation of engine oil is the main reason for an oil change in the first place, it can help a bit sometimes. Also many service manuals recommend it, so no reason for not doing it...
@frankiebk1465

Adding oil to the filter helps fill it up before you start the bike so the oil can reach other parts of the engine sooner instead of having to fill the entire filter first. The time it takes for all this to happen is probably negligible and on my personal bike I don’t do this because the filter mounts horizontally just like on this v strom but on my car it’s vertically mounted so in that case I take the time to fill it up.
@RadDadisRad
Жыл бұрын
It’s easier to just turn off the fuel and crank it over. You have residual oil sitting on all the surfaces during startup anyways so priming the filter before installing it is pointless. It’s no different than starting up an engine after sitting overnight.
@frankiebk1465
Жыл бұрын
@@RadDadisRad I can’t imagine cranking the engine without starting is any better than simply starting it to circulate the oil but regardless the main reason I fill up my car filter is to get a better oil level reading before I start it this way I never have to top it off after the initial start since the oil level reading practically stays the same.
@RadDadisRad
Жыл бұрын
@@frankiebk1465 combustion pressure causes the impacts on the bearings. Cranking without any combustion will cycle the oil pump and pushes the new oil everywhere before the first combustion cycle takes place. Cold starts are what cause the most wear on engines. If oil is cycled through before first fire you’ll have oil saturation and not just a film layer of oil on everything.
@jeremiahloyd1740

Priming the filter just reduces the amount of time the engine will run before oil is circulated throughout the engine. Oil sits in the pan, gets pumped to the filter first, then lubricates all the engine parts. If you have a dry filter, you add like 1 second of engine running without oil circulation. So in other words, it’s not a very big deal.

You don't just run the engine at idle - you're supposed to drain the oil after a longer ride, so the engine is warm and you don't leave any "frozen drops" of old oil in the system. If you ride all year, it doesn't matter that much. But if you don't ride in winter, you also change the oil after the last ride of the season and don't start it up (just disable the fuel pump and let the starter pump the oil through the engine).

There will always be old oil in the engine whether you run the bike or not. Oil is designed to cling to engine parts and keep it lubricated when starting up. So you will always have old oil in the engine no matter what you do. More regular oil changes resolves this issue. So warm the engine up to allow the oil to run more easy, thus allowing more old oil to drain. It’s literally the first thing you learn when changing oil on any motor 😂
