How to do an Angle Start in an Automatic Car
When we drive off from a parked position, ideally we would just like to drive off without dealing with any obstructions. You may have parked your car on an empty road but when you come back, let's assume that a driver has parked in front and another at the back. You have no option but to move off at an angle. This is known as an angle start
During the driving test, the examiner will ask you to pull up on the left, instructing you to get fairly close to the car in front. If you leave too much of a gap, the examiner will only ask you to get closer. It is important to understand that the closer you get to the vehicle in front, the hard it will be to get out. So, ideally, you want to follow the tyres and the tarmac rule. When you stop, ensure that you can still see the tyres of the car in front and the tarmac.
Once you have stopped, the examiner will ask you to drive off when it's safe to do so. Don’t rush the move-off. Ask yourself, whether the road is flat, uphill or downhill. Keeping a slow speed ( similar to reversing) is vital for this manoeuvre. However, at the same time, you need to steer briskly otherwise you could end up hitting the corner of the vehicle in front.
