Dip your gloved finger in the fresh oil container and rub the oil filter gasket with the wet finger. Also, use a Fumoto valve to replace the oil pan drain bolt. Once that’s installed, draining the oil is easier and no worries about over tightening the drain bolt and stripping the threads on the oil pan. Hand tightening the filter is sufficient. I never wrench the oil filter tighter. Finally, I use a couple short lengths (about 12 inches long) of 2x10 boards under the front tires to get it high enough for my floor jack to reach the central lift point. I also use jackstands under the pinchwelds. I lift the rear by using my floor jack under the rear differential and put jackstands under the rear pinchwelds. Now I have the car level and drain the oil, rotate the tires and easily check the brake pads and guide pins. First time I changed oil in the wrx I found out the hard way that the 5 qt container can’t hold all the oil drained from the wrx sump! I was used to changing oil on engines that hold less than 5 qts in the sump.

I've always used mobil one also, until I watched a few videos testing mobil one vs amsoil. Bought my first 6qts of amsoil today.

Yea since I got dynotuned I actually switched back to regular Subaru oil. My tuner recommends sticking with OEM oil or Motul. I've heard good things about Amsoil though. On a stock car you can pretty much use any oil. If you do end up getting tuned just stick with the oil that your tuner recommends.

I came here just to double check how the crush gasket goes on haha. I've had my '16 WRX for like 3-4 years and have never replaced the crush gasket.... Never had to do that on my other cars. Guess who has an oil spot in their garage!

Yea not all cars use crush washers but ours do. Well now the oil spot won't get any bigger lol.

I would have cleaned the oil cooler tray prior to installing the new filter, Dirt and oil old is accumulated on top.

Yea, I didn't realize it at first. Went back before starting the car and wiped off as much as I could.

Double check your manual but for the 2015-2021 Subaru WRX, they take 5.4 qt, so the big container and about half of the smaller one. I'd pour about 1/4, lower the car and then check the dip stick. If it needs more you can always add more. If you overfill it, you can't easily take out oil.

Lol, I switched back to the OEM Subaru Oil after I got protuned. My tuner recommends that one or Motul.
