Used to be able to middle split, could go from sitting on floor with legs straight out in front if me to superman without bending knees all while maintaining crotch contact with the floor. I was born flexy but it turns out I had a hip impingement in my right hip I didn't know about til it eventually tore my labrum in my late 30's. The bone contact resultant was a pain that would throw me to the floor before I knew what had happened. I was fortunate to see a young hip Otherpedic surgeon who was able to orthoscopically repair the torn cartilage and shave down the impingement. I've maintained above average flexibility since but do not aspire to ever do splits again. It's great to just be able to fully functionally use the joint still after that injury

I have a question about the butterfly stretch when going from the passive approach to the active approach, where you said when there's no where left to go down, you go above...how are your ankles positioned? Are your feet still facing each other when hovering over? This really hurts my ankles, yet I feel no stretch at the hips. I am definitely ready to move from passive to active in this position to get more depth, but I don't think my ankles will allow me to put my weight over them with feet facing each other. I can stand do a plie type position with heels lifted, but not sure if that is still the correct hip position? I hope this makes sense! Please advise me if you can 😊

So I'm trying to regain my mobility after a long bout of sickness and injury. Do you think it's possible to get back to this level at almost 50 years old?
