I liked the way you worked (pumped) the tiller to have the boat go straight into the dock. I have a Chrysler 22' and have only played with it for one summer. So far I have managed to not hit any other boats,...lol You are a good teacher! Thanks for the lesson.

In those conditions it works well, but I am not sure my boat would drift for that long unless there is a current pushing me.

Very well done video. I was looking for this, since I will be building a small unpowered sailboat starting this year. Every other video is for motorized boats. Thanks for the information!

Your 100% right, it was almost exhausting to find an unmotorised version of the under sail technique. I hope this vid makes it to the top of the youtube recommended list. Happy sailing!

That is sooo cool!! Would you do this upwind in maybe a close haul or beam reach?

Luckily the marina had 2 entrances: north and south. I take the appropriate entrance depending on wind direction. On an upwind approach I run downwind under main, then make a giant U-turn to end up nose into the wind. Would probably make more sense if I could draw a picture.

Definetely a BIG like, thankis for sharing :-) Unfortunately, and officially, where I am it is forbidden to sail into the marina. (Probably to prevent any "missed" approaches with related damage :-)) However, I was thinking many times, how would I sail into at least any spot in a marina should the engine fail one day. My assigned berth is probably too far in to sail into (few turns required), but I think I will try some docking maneuvers at an easy to reach spot, just to be sure, I know what to do, should that day come.

It looks like you know your boat, the harbour and the conditions very well. It's a routine that can be done in favorable conditions and with small yachts. But the minute the wind comes strong from behind, or your boat is too large to stop by hand, one mistake and you'll have a lot of damage. To prevent that, I'd recommend anyone attempting this to use either the tried and tested Mediterranean technique taught in courses (stern or bow anchor for stopping, letting the wind then slowly blow you in), or using a long line on a berth pole on the other side, and slipping the line in a controlled manner until you're in the box. These ways allow you to always be in control, even in windier conditions.

Don't use anchors in harbours... Use a middle cleated spring line. Prepare it before hand, measure it out before hand. And when you come it use your boat hook to slip it over the cleat you measured the distance to so it stop, and then quickly secure the bow. If possible have crew at the front doing that bit, and someone who potentially can fend on any potential damage with a fender.

I've got no talent at woodworking but I was still able to follow those instructions on the dock as a liveaboard using only a circular saw and a beltsander. Here are some photos of the process: www.flickr.com/photos/bobhall/2827827373/ www.flickr.com/photos/bobhall/2827827355/

My boat draws only 2'6" with rather stubby bilge keels and quite high freeboard, she would make far too much leeway to try this. It has to be up wind under power every time. I have tried coming off the dock under sail and the instant we cleared the end of the dock, she went sideways big time and with little room astern, we just drifted straight onto the leeward pontoon and needed a push off to straighten her out.

Hey, I know one of the Muffin folks! What do you do when you get caught in the nightly dusk breeze, when the day's light air suddenly gets gusty an hour before sunset?

This video (obviously) shows a down-wind landing. I hope to make a similar video demonstrating an up-wind landing which is a far more pleasant way to dock in my opinion. In a down-wind landing with stronger winds, I would drop the headsail much sooner... usually immediately after enter the breakwater. If wind speeds are 15-20 knots, I might be going 2.5 or 3 knots under bare poles. In that case I perform the exact same maneuver as shown in this video, only faster. If the wind is really cranking above 25 knots (which is pretty rare inside the marina) then I might tie up to the large linear dock at the North end of the marina ("X Dock") and wait for the wind to calm down before attempting to land in my slip.

This would never work in any kind of wind. Freeboard would be ac y ing as a sail and you would have crazy leeway, www hy not just keep the head sail up really loosely until the last minute
@MrRobertkhall

Your concerns are valid but it works just fine in heavy wind. In fact, the heavier the wind the earlier I drop the jib. It's not uncommon to run 3.5-4kts downwind under bare poles. The turn I make just prior to entering my slip helps burn off some speed, then you just need to be really aggressive and speedy with your spring line once you hop on the dock. There's no motor on this boat at all, I do this all the time.
