Warning for 8th gen honda civics: These cars run super cool to start with. If you change it on a cold day outside, you will have a very very very hard time getting the fan to come on twice. Wait until a warmer day (e.g., > 65F) and keep the rpms up. Even with that, your fans will only kick on for a few seconds so pay attention. First time I did it in the middle of winter and though I had an air bubble because the fan would not kick on. My GM from the past would run hot and the fan would kick on in the middle of winter with no problem --- not saying this is a god thing, but that the "standard" method does not account for the slight differences between car models and makes.

Don't release the plastic spigot all the way, otherwise the coolant is gonna come out in both orifices and makes a mess. Just release spigot for a thin stream, say 4 turns and stop. This is probably a good time to release the reservoir and give it a through inside cleaning.
@XerxezsX

I think you can just reach down or reach underneath and unscrew the plastic cap with your hand and just place a container underneath, that's what I did with a 2012 civic ex coupe, you don't need to lift the car, then went to the honda dealer and bought two jugs of the honda radiator coolant 👌 you can find the owners manual of your vehicle type online and go to it's index find the word coolant go to that page, it should tell you the capacity and coolant type you need, for Honda's you will only use the Honda fluid. Don't cheap out. Before you flush the coolant, take the cap off the radiator and take a picture of the coolant level for reference. After you flush the coolant measure exactly how much you took out and then put that much in, (you can do this with the transmission fluid too, measure how much you took out and put that much in). Make sure your car is cold when putting in the coolant. Fill up the radiator then fill reservoir to it's appropriate level, let coolant settle and keep doing this for a few mins until it's settled, then when it's settled turn on the car and then just add as needed keep the car running, use common sense and take your time, once you don't see the coolant going lower you're done, in the next few days check your coolant level when your car is cold just out of precaution.

Blue or Green coolant? There are silicate antifreezes, used in most domestic cars until recent years, and OAT antifreezes, used in Japanese cars because of their domestic market testing. In OAT antifreeze the silicate has been replaced with phosphates. Domestic cars today all use OAT now, with Chrysler the last to switch. So any OAT antifreeze will work in a Honda, but don't use silicate antifreeze in any Japanese coolant system, Honda or otherwise. Evidence shows it reduces water pump life in certain Japanese import cars. Prestone Regular or 50/50 is a silicate free OAT antifreeze. It uses phosphates to replace the silicates. Ultimately it isn't the color but the composition that matters. It was confusing for a while, but since most of the industry went to OAT you can't go far wrong with any name brand off-the-shelf coolant. The US and Japan are on the same page in 2013. Also from the link above: "The dye color of antifreeze has nothing to do with antifreeze formula or performance. Chrysler’s G-05 contains orange dye to distinguish it from a yellow dye antifreeze previously used. Other users of G-05 have yellow or even blue dye. However, GM DexCool, a purely organic acid type, also has orange dye, and this has been a source of service industry confusion. Fiat’s OAT, although a different formula, also has orange dye and it has been used in early production of the Dodge Dart. The new Chrysler OAT, however, will have a purple dye." It's far more important to use distilled water, which is less than a dollar per gallon and often overlooked in this discussion. Tap water contains minerals you don't want. So what gives Prestone the confidence to state "all makes and models?" It contains phosphates, not silicates, so it is safe to use in a Japanese car's cooling system. It can also be used in any non-Japanese car as long as North American water is used! So to support its claim Prestone merely specifies that its coolant be used in North America! Simple. See: "Some European automobile manufacturers request that a phosphate-free antifreeze be used in their vehicles. This issue is related to the extremely high mineral content of the water in Europe ... in North America we do not have this type of water problem ... the question of phosphates is a non-issue here in North America. Prestone Antifreeze/Coolant is completely safe for use in both foreign and domestic vehicles." That being said, if you feel better using one or another, go ahead. But don't freak out. Check the labels on the ones you're using to see if they are compatible. You should still stay away from Orange or coolant formulated for European cars. personally I've used both and haven't had any issues in the past 25 years on my RD1, RD2, RD7, RE4, EK, EM1, EJ8, DC2, AP1, AP2,

No the cap can't be on until all the air is bled out the system. That funnel is super cheap I bought mine for 20 bucks on Amazon, worth every penny. Also, this video doesn't show it but it take a really long time for all the air to come out. Fans have to kick on, off, then on again. Finally after all that there's no air in the system and you can put your radiator cap back on tight. You might have to keep your car running for like half an hour, I've heard one dude say it took like an hour. Hope all that helps.

@@mikea5205 honda techs have the engine running for 30-45 mins. if your heater is giving off hot air, safe to assume the job is done and you can put the cap back on. yes, leave the cap open until you are done with topping up the fluid. I don't think you need the special funnel, you just need to wait for the liquid to go down, and then add a bit. Then squeeze lightly on the tube that connects to it to push out the air bubbles.

On my 97 civic that only removes about 2-3 quarts of coolant. If the system is full of plain water - as in after flushing it - how do you get enough water out to make room for 50/50 mix?
@peeinacan1
2 жыл бұрын
i know its way too late, but the way i like to do it is get it to 100% water. Then compare the total capacity to the change capacity in the manual. Use concetrated antifreeze to get it back to a 50/50 mix. So if your total is 2 gallons and your change is 1 gallon, you just drain out the gallon and add a gallon of concentrate.

What percentage of coolant do you think would be left in the system by draining the radiator only? That is what percentage of coolant would be left in the engine block and heater core?
@danielb3863
6 жыл бұрын
About 20-25% is still left. Change it every 30k-35k so that the other 20-25% is still in good shape and make minimal to no difference to being mixed in with new fluid. Honda coolant is good for 7 years or 150k miles, which ever comes first. Its just cheap insurance to do it every 30-35k especially if you like keeping your cars 15 year plus. 2 gallons at the Honda dealer will run you about 40-45 bucks, you only need a 1.5 gallons so keep the other half gallon in your trunk for emergencies. Every Honda dealer here where I live charges about 85 bucks to do it for you, coolant and labor included. As you can see its an easy job.
