A quicker solution is, once you set up your 0.2% offset line, add a linear trendline, and once the trendline format window pops up, go on forward forecast and play around with it a bit so it extended your line as much as you want. You can then see where the linear line and stress vs strain plot intersect

Hi, great explanation, but I do not understand why did you do the extrapolation of the linear region of your offset curve using the Young modulus times the "original strain" and not the "offset strain" ? (which I think how it should be because you want to extrapolate that second line so you can intercept the stress-strain curve with that same slope (E)).
@LocTran-gp5qd

If you use "offset strain", you will not get the parallel line to the "linear region", but a slightly skewed one. You can try and see on Excel.

Use Trendline You can selected the linear line (the 0.2% offset data) from the chart, click on the top icon popped out from the top right side (called "Chart Elements", looks like a green plus) Select "Trendline", click ">", choose "More options". Choose "Trendline Options". Choose "Linear" and "Display Equation on Chart" On the graph will pop up an equation that is "y=ax+b" your "a" will be the slope or Young's Modulus

You can't determine the exact intersection since the lines are not continuous, but data points connected together. You can only estimate the value for the yield strength.

Just a question, sorry if i've got this wrong but wouldn't you need to multiply the stress by 1.002, not add 0.002, becuase you're just adding that 0.002 value to the original stress, not finding the extra 0.2% of the stress?
@LocTran-gp5qd
5 жыл бұрын
We are not finding any extra 0.2%. We are shifting the Elastic (linear) part of the stress-strain graph over to 0.2%. That's why it's called "Offset", which means the difference.

Shouldn't you multiply your original strain value by 0.2% and then add that new value, as opposed to just adding .002?
@LocTran-gp5qd
5 жыл бұрын
If you multiply the original strain by 0.2%, you will simply squeeze the graph into its 0.2% version. (0% ->0% 1% -> 0.002% 10% -> 0.02% 100% -> 0.2%). However, the idea is to SHIFT the elastic region (linear behavior) forward where: (0% -> 0.2% 1% ->1.2% 10% -> 10.2% 100% -> 100.2%) That's why it's called OFFSET line, which will exist a difference between each set of data. In this case , the difference is 0.2%.

You really cannot exactly find it, but you can estimate it. You can try to "zoom" in to the graph by adjusting the bounds on x and y axis.

Loc Tran I’m saying you would set the offset strain column to the (original strain)+(.002*maxStrain) because of you just add .002 that’s only .2% if the maxStrain is 1?
@LocTran-gp5qd

@@Kevin-ls9zs Hi, very good question. the 0.2% offset here is the 0.2% of the original length, not 0.2% of the maximum strain. However, this is the information I gained from preliminary research, so please feel free to add sources if you find any incorrections in my videos. Many thanks

good method. do you also know how to get the value of the 0.2% yield strength from the line you draw?
@LocTran-gp5qd
6 жыл бұрын
I did it the hard way. What I did is I changed the bounds value for the axis for both stress and strain, making the graphs "zoomed" into the intercept. Double-clicks on to the axis value then choose "Axis Options", then change the values for the "Bounds" for Maximum and Minimum. *For Example*: You have the graph with stress from 0 to 100 Pa, and your yield is somewhere around 70 Pa. Change your bounds to 60 =>75 Pa. Then do the same thing for Strain, and keep doing it for better accuracy.

Hellow boddy, I want to ask you something about the curve Stress vs Strain; how do you calculate the strain? what is the original length? I can see in your excell formula that you can used DcR2, so I have a doubt about the first values: because the %strain = (length variable in the test - original lenght/original lenght)*100 and for me the first data appear negative until the original lenght of the sample :/ thanks you

why it is required to draw offset line.
@LocTran-gp5qd
6 жыл бұрын
because for stress-strain graphs of materials such as metals, it's hard to tell where the yield point lies on the curve, so we utilize the 0.2% offset method to determine that. However, in cases for materials such as polymers, it's very easy to tell where the yield point is, so you don't need to draw the offset line.
