That was so enjoyable, thank you. Emily, you mentioned that for wildlife you usually use a tan background. How do you decide what color paper to use for your subject? Do you choose a warm tone if the subject is warm? For this piece you clearly went with a cool tone for the cool subject. I’ve been experimenting with Claire Fontaine pastelmat paper in different colors, but can’t seem to work out the “formula“.

Hi Annette, ah yes! This is something a bit more technical as to fully get to grips with it, you'll want a good grounding in colour theory, tone and also how your pencils layer. I go into some detail about paper colours in this video, but it's also something I talk about throughout my detailed membership lessons. As a very general rule, however, the sand is great for browns and then something darker, as the above, will contrast strong colours PROVIDING the pencils you use are able to cover the tooth of the card well enough.
