as a legally blind person, I don't see the colours that you do in the photo, so it helps to know there are actually other colours there besides the dominant ones. Enjoyed your video very much, thank you for sharing

Glad it was useful! I think as a general rule, shade the shadows the opposite colour of the light source. If the photo is taken inside, the light is going to be warmer, so make your shadow cooler. If the photo is taken outside around midday, you're likely to have a lot of blue reflected light from the sky, so make the shadows warmer. If the photo is outside but close to sunrise/set, then the light is warm and the shadows cooler. It's a VERY general idea, but probably helpful to you! Faber Castell 181, 230 and 233 are your cool greys, FC 273, 270 and 275 are the warmer ones :)

One main thing that helps me do commission work is I learned to trust myself. Even a ‘not in the mood’ day can keep me objective in any mistakes I’ve made yesterday. Everything can and will be fixed. Find that Zen moment. Those are amazing as your instincts take over and in this dreamy state I do my best work. The reward is bringing life to your work. Enjoy!

I watched it to the end. There is colours I do not really use myself, but makes the dog stand out beautiful. Your colours makes the dog look very good maybe start think about the way I use white. I am mostly a landscape artist.

Thanks James! I think white can be so exciting to create because of all the reflected light happening. It makes every portrait different!

Hi Emily, I’m curious to know if you’ve ever had a request for a Dalmatian portrait? Within the first two mins of this video, you mentioned my biggest “issue” which is drawing white fur 😂😂. Actually it’s also the blending the spots into the white fur. I have two Dals and would love to attempt a pastel portrait one day. I love watching your channel. Thank you 😊

Wonderfully informative with a delightful narrative! Providing solid information is key to understanding how to accomplish a goal. However, having such a pleasing voice makes the process a joy. Your generous tutorial piqued my interest to delve deeper into your presentations. Many thanks! Side bar: My background is in watercolors and soft pastels. 🥰

Hi Emily, do you have any video explaining how to do the color-picking thing from a photo as you showed here? I don't know much about photoshop, gimp etc, and knowing how to use that tool would be very useful , thank you.

Signed up for your membership last week, it's really amazing! I stumbled upon some paper, also from Clairefontaine but it is called Pastelgrain. Do you have any experience with this new paper? (at least, new for me 😊). Looking forward to more videos, really like your work and style of teaching ❤

Amazing tutorial thank you. If you do a commission, with what product do you seal it?
@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820

Hi, thanks so much 😊 no I don’t seal the paintings actually but only because I’m using pastelmat. I’ll do a video about it but I have to say I’ve really tested the durability of the works and they are fine to go without spraying 😊

This is so beautifully done. Thank you for the lovely video. I have never worked with this medium before so am wondering, (because you said you don't usually seal it) ,if you frame it, would you put it behind glass or leave it open.
@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
5 ай бұрын
Yes, behind glass! I usually add a double mount (matting if you’re in the US) as this a) looks classy but b) helps to protect the work 😊
Hi I am new to pastels and i was wondering how similar would this be to prismacolor pencils? Thank you.
@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820

Hi! Quite different as coloured pencils are a wax based pencil, whereas, pastels are chalk based. By comparison, the pastel are going to feel almost crumby to you and very, very soft. While different, they are fabulous to work with and quite a lot faster!

Hi emily do you sell the palette guide for different color furs you spoke about ie what the layers are for whites, ginger, grey etc. Also do you use pan pastels for base coat at all or hust rely on your pencils.
@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
4 ай бұрын
Hi Lee, I don’t sell them as a stand alone thing but you can download a booklet with the suggested colours inside when you’re a member (and then keep it forever). I sometimes use pan pastels, mostly for larger drawings, but I’m general teach with the pencils so it’s more accessible 😊
