Now this is what I call a lesson. When I see how it's done I learn better to do it myself. I don't have a liking in video tutorials where the process is explained. Show me is how I learn and enjoy the most.

This is absolutely amazing. It always fascinates me how adding the smallest amounts of graphite can manipulate a shape and make it appear to lift off the page. I have two incredible artists in my family line, my cousin and my great-grandfather. I always thought they had some sort of superpower that enabled them to create life-like drawings and paintings. The more I learn about--and practice--drawing, the more I realize that their main superpower was patience and technical skill. It takes a LOT of patience it to develop this level of skill. JD, I'd love to know if you always had a lot of patience and you applied it to drawing or if drawing helped you developed patience. This is my biggest weakness. I love to draw, but I always feel like I need to finish a drawing i 1 or 2 sessions.
@JDHillberry1
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, I don't think I have any more patience than anyone else. People get impatient when they aren't enjoying the activity. You have to train yourself to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Some people call this "getting in the zone". When time flies by as you are drawing you can go for hours and it feels like minutes. Sometimes it helps to do drawing exercises that don't result in a finished drawing. Try practicing getting gradual values from dark to light. That way, there isn't a real destination so it forces you to enjoy the act of putting pencil to paper.

@JDHillberry1
8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There are many different ways of using the measuring tools also. You can "eyeball" some key features first, then use the measuring tools to check to see how accurate you are. This will help you learn to be much more accurate at eyeballing it if you choose to continue to do it that way. Or, you can take some precise measurements to start with like I did in this drawing. There are no rules in art. YOU are the one that gets to choose how you create YOUR artwork.

Mate I've been watching your vids today and you are awesome. I hope you don't own a camera because you just don't need the damn thing. If you can get the subject to hold still long enough, your going to have a picture every bit as detailed and realistic. I have seen a few people who draw on the internet, that are somewhere on the scale in your league and you guys just blow me away every time I see what you guys can do. I love art in any form so do photography and its certainly my passion in life, but to be able to create something as detailed as a photo, with your own hands and skill, is truly a gift. Omg - 20 years after losing my artist mother, I've suddenly realised why she loved her kneadable eraser so much! - I always hated them...... They didn't rub out the lines I didn't want, because my pencil lines were embedded in the tooth. Whereas Mum, being the consummate artist, drew properly, so the pencil lines were sitting on top of the tooth, easily erased! The penny dropped, just now, when I saw him just lifting the pencil shading up with the kneadable eraser, thus negative drawing.... Lightbulb moment! And a whole new chapter for me, just started.

J.D. uses Archilles 140lb 100% rag with the purple front on the tablet for his great pictures because it is archival and acid free so it is great for if you want it to stay white forever and not yellow.

Hi, great tutorial! I have two questions: 1) You are using a shiny paper under your hand to prevent smearing - what kind of paper is it? 2) Why do you use only one very soft pencil, as opposed to a range from hard to soft? I look forward to your reply and thank you!
@JDHillberry1

the paper under my hand is just plain printer paper. I'm just using one pencil to demonstrate the versatility of the kimberly 9xxb. Those measuring devices are such crutches; only useful for over-sized or very busy/time-consuming pieces. If it's just a single item still life subject, then simplicity is key - using the tool in your hand - i.e. your pencil, is the way to go. it tunes your eye to look and observe accurately.
@JDHillberry1
3 жыл бұрын
Measuring with your pencil is doing exactly the same thing as measuring with a proportional divider or compass. It does not "tune your eye to look and observe accurately" any differently. With both, you take a measurement and make a mark or use them to check marks already made. The biggest difference is these other tools are more accurate, that's why they were invented hundreds of years ago by the great masters.

@@JDHillberry1 but what happens when your source is not secondary I.e. a photo in front of you, but rather still life? Where you can't place a grid on it or taking a laptop grid isn't practical? I'm not sure they replace observing relationships such as trigulation and comparative measuring.
