Yea I prefer the first image. It's way better and has a clear communication style. The second attempt is confusing and unclear and mismatched in style. But it seems the idea isn't right or wrong it's more about mood and context. I feel there is a time and place to use both not one over the other in general. If eating the 2nd. If charming, joking, the first.

@@flashback7273 you can apply the principles he was explaining while drawing the 2nd to many other mouths, not every mouth you draw while applying them will turn out lookin like a hungry ass mf the way theirs did lol, cause not every mouth you draw is gonna be open that wide or portraying that same expression. i think what they mean is basically "if you're drawing with perspective, make sure the mouth has perspective too, even if it's anime. it look good"

honestly it's all about context, some of the greatest mangakas out there incorporate flat looking or exaggerated mouths as part of the style. yes this tip is good if you want more realism, but it's not always better. there is charm and uniqueness in wonkyness

@@abadoukalou9122 It is more cartoony though. What is important is that the less realistic you make a drawing the less jarring those inconsistencies will seem. The Uncanny Valley effect doesn't apply to old Disney cartoons because they went out of their way to extra soften their human characters. We believe Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella are human easily but that is not what a person looks like.

@@OceanRequiemwe’re looking down at the mouth while the head is up. Look at the nose and you’ll see the nostril hole, which you wouldn’t normally see unless your looking at a lower angle then look at the bottom teeth curve Which you would only see if you look down into someone mouth. Hard to explain, bad at English, can’t describe what I mean. Look in mirror down and up with open mouth.

It’s the anime style. It literally makes me think there’s a chasm or a mouth on the side of the face. But its a style and as a style it can work it it’s consistent and doesn’t distract. The implied side of the other mouth, still on this side of the face is interesting. I wouldn’t only draw mouths in these ways though, it’s limit you from exploring how interesting the angles and style can be with more accurate facial expressions.

The perspective is all wonky now tho. You shouldn't be able to see the bottom row of teeth at that angle from that angle... The bottom row should look pretty much the same as the top one. This isn't good advice.

Nah, bro.. It's also a question of style. Never say to an artist "STOP DOING THAT!" Because you'll never know when it's a personal preferences. Just show your personal preference about how to draw something. To be an artist doesn't mean necessarily to do realistic stuff or drawing just in one specific way.. I seriously hate gatekeeping artists. So many say things like “you’re doing it wrong” or “wrong color” or “do my way of art because it’s better than yours” like seriously do yall not get art at all?! It's not a style, it's bad perspective and it looks off. If you're using that as a style deliberately then you are probably doing it to make your audience feel like something is off, in which case this video obviously doesn't apply to you. You don't have to do it the way he did, but it's an insight into how simple changes can lead to more 3 dimensional drawings.

For those with the "both are good" and "it's art do what you want" mindset I completely understand where you are coming from but this is a type of tip that isn't drastically changing your style but adding elements to your drawing that make then generally more appealing and dynamic.
