Best tip: Drill bit is the diameter of the head of the screw! Seems intuitive but escaped me. What I needed to know. Drilling technique is so useful. Thank you so much for this video!!! I think if you are making a shed, you may need a jig. Kreg is so insanely overpriced though at $100 for a bit of plastic and steel! Ridiculous. It should be a $30 price at most. Milescraft makes a $13 and $25 jig. The $25 version has lots of great reviews. Worth getting. Similar Kreg is $40.

Be careful with it though because milescraft is flagged, Sept 2024, as "frequently returned" on amazon

I KNEW it could be done in a simple way. I looked at one jib where they wanted $100 for it! Insane when these can be drilled so simply by hand. Brilliant.

I use this method too. I find that a spade bit is a ‘bit’ better because it also creates a center hole to start the screw. Good video 👍👍 I liked and subscribed 😊

I have a couple Kreg jigs and I like them and use them a fair bit but I also saw the carpenter on This Old House do this exact thing and it's freaking brilliant. Thanks for the video. One thing - those construction or drywall screws that have the conical head can pull through the "pocket" and split the wood. Better off with a flat, "cabinet screw."

I've got the pocket hole jig from Harbor Freight but have used this technique as well. Sometimes simple is good enough.

Nicely done! I imagine you could do this more quickly than a pocket hole jig.

Thanks Mike, I think you could do it quicker than with a jig.

Thank you for this I don't do construction but I build cars. I'm trying to build a wooden bar and I was having a hard time figuring out how to drill the pieces together. And I'm not going to buy that jig or whatever so this is extremely helpful thank you

Thank you for showing how to do this! I have a jig, but I already assembled my project and I want to make it a bit stronger. The jig won’t fit where I need to do this, so I’m going to try this method instead.

Nice technique ! Still, I'm not going to lie, my Kreg pocket hole jig was one of the very best investments I ever made... I can't begin to tell you how much use I've gotten out of that thing over the years. Yes, it was pricey but I think it's paid for itself. Still, use what you've got where you're at... that's my motto. Great video, thanks for sharing !

Thanks Joe! I have no doubts that a pocket hole jig is a nice tool to have. I just don't need one often enough to justify the price at this point. If I had a job that had a lot of pocket holes to build I would probably purchase a jig. Thanks for watching and commenting!

A half lap joint would have been stronger for this door frame joint. A bridle joint would be even stronger.
