How this works for anyone that is confused: A floating Floyd Rose tremolo requires perfect equilibrium to stay in tune. The force exerted by the strings (which pulls the bridge forward) has to be matched by the force exerted by the springs (which pulls the bridge backwards). When the two forces are equal the bridge will float in perfect barlance parallel to the body of the guitar. If you just detune the guitar with the tuners and lock it back up it will NOT work. By lowering the tension of one string the springs are able to pull the bridge back and increase the overall tension. If you try to tune the guitar normally it takes forever because you have to constantly retune to gradually pull the bridge upward. And when you're trying to drop tune the balance is even more fucked up. This method bypasses as lot of that shit. By blocking the trem the force of the springs is capped. No matter how much force they exert the bridge won't move past the block. So with the trem blocked you can tune as you would normally without having to keep retuning to compensate for the spring pull. When the strings are tuned at the headstock the strings are going to exert the exact pressure they need to stay in tune. You're essentially setting a basepoint: String tension is X, so for the bridge to float the spring tension must also be X. When you remove the block the strings go out of tune. If you've tuned the guitar down then the springs, which are set to exert the force needed to match the force of strings tuned to E Standard, are going to pull the bridge down too sharp. This needs to be fixed and it is a simple matter of adjusting the claw. By screwing the claw in you are increasing the spring tension (dramatic increases can be done by adding or removing springs, as seen in the video). And conveniently enough, when the spring tension matches the string tension the guitar will be in tune and the bridge will be parallel. It happens automatically. Isn't it magical?

The tricky part for me was the step in which I needed to remove the spring.. The screws were too far out, so I removed it and screwed em back in.. Now my guitar is in perfect drop B with leveled fine tuners and flat straight Floyd rose mechanism... I will check it again this afternoon for detuning and stuff but I think it's gonna be fine... ok, look up the evh d-tuna it will do what you want, but 2 things: if you want to still pull the bar back you're going to need to route out a spot for the d-tuna to be pulled back through. Next you'll need a stablilizer which allows you to pull back and still droptune w/ out the other strings going out of tune. If you dont want to use the term or just not pull back, put a wood block under it so it wont move back and then you can drop tune but not pull back. P.S the first option is around $80.

Great video, thanks for the information. Only thing is you cant properly tune a guitar if it is not held at a 90° angle while tuning. The guitar should be tuned while holding it as if you're playing it with a strap on at a 90° angle, never tune a guitar while its lying flat down on a table or at any other angle, Herman Li just explained this in a recent video on their Dragon Force KZitem page, and shows how a guitar goes in an out of tune while holding it flat or upside down

You can, but its going to require a truss rod adjustment and the usual adjustments if u have a floyd. That gauge is doable for standard (esp if you have a strong or thick neck that can handle it without needing much truss adjustment) but would be more comfortable in 1/2 step down.
@othneildrew

Because it's a floating bridge. Tuning it like a regular guitar would case the bridge to not work properly because every time you tune one string the tension from that one stirng changes causing the whole bridge to move. Therefore, it's easier to tune the way he showed it.

Of the 3 guitars(a fender Frankenstrat im putting together with an original German made 84 spec Floyd a Charvel pro mod HH So.Cal black strat with a Floyd 1000 and an EVH Wolfgang special with the evh branded floyd)the plan was only floating 1 of them wich is the Charvel with the cavity. Put them under the bridge like he did, and then tune my E to D useing the guitar nuts. Then I removed the cards slowly and begn tuning it more precise. NOTE: The strings will go up about ½-1 notes after you remove the cards, so just tune them down. Go, e, E(D), B, A, G, D, to keep the tension, or it will go back up to ½-1 note higher again. Good Luck!!

(protip: block ur bridge in neutral position with the thinnest (rigid) material u can find by sliding it between the body and the bridge.) 2. LOCK the neck (remove protip) 3. APPLY RULE 4. REPEAT untill RULE no longer applies and your in tune. IF your still having problems going lower, up your string gauges, use 10-46 or 11-52 (lower than A)

Too much string tension. If the bridge is tilted up, you should screw the claw screws in the body and if its already in far enough and still tilted up, then add a spring. That will bring the bridge down to level with the body. Then tune the guitar to drop D using the tuning machines on the headstock and adjust the spring tension if necessary.

First off the reason is hes tuning the guitar down. So You want to keep your trem perfectly level so you put shims he uses business cards to keep the tremolo level.He then makes sure its in perfect E tuning and Level. So Now what happens is the when detuning the springs tighten up and the term would be sitting like a ramp unlevel. So what you do is Tune with the springs by loosening them and he did it exact until both Hi and Low E strings were Cs This is the most effficient way to detune!!

I think you're taking about a regular tremolo bridge. Floyd rose systems always have those locks and micro-tuners. Don't change the strings tightness unless you know what you're doing. If you want to downtune to drop A a guitar which I suppose is set up for standard, it's gonna sound pretty noisy.

another good way to keep the same settings (of a regular tuning) on a lower tuning is to use a heavier gague strings so you get a similar tension at a lower tuning ;) I use 10/52 strings for open B tuning and the settings of the Floyd Rose are about the same of a regular tuning with 10/46 strings

@AlexM1175 you have to do exactly the same thing as tuning a floyed down.....this video only shows how you change your tuning with a floyed. block the bridge (if you want to tune higher you will have to tighten the screws before the next step), unlock the strings, tune the guitar, lock the strings, unblock the floyed.....and than "adjust" the tuning with the screws.

You could also use a morpheus droptune pedal. It will not have as good a tone but it's miles less hassle.

Actually if you go to the back and roll up some pennies with a dime and put tape around them and stick it between the Floyd rose and the body it's actually better cause paper can compress

No because you will increase the bridge tension but some like to use a 4th spring

The simple fact that this video is over 9min. long is a big part of the reason why I play a Les Paul...

Hi TTK, I always had doubts in regards to STEP 6. When you tighten locking nuts and tune from the back. Won't this hurt your strings very badly? Ain't we suppose to NEVER TUNE after locking? Great informative video nevertheless. Love your editing, straight to the point and no time wasting parts.
