hi everybody today I am doing an experiment with drying flowers and am going to show you 5 different ways on how to dry flowers and then in the end of the video I will show you the results of some of them and which one I am most happy with.
There are several kinds of flowers you can use for drying. Roses are a very hardy flower and are great for drying. You can also dry such flowers like these babies breath as well as daisies, lavender amaranth, cocks comb, lilies, pansies, sea lavenders, hydrangea, marigolds yarrow, sage, and many others. What is important to note when you are picking a flower is how delicate it is. If it has sturdy petals like a rose then you can use almost any method for drying. If it has more delicate petals then different methods should be used. The first method we are going to try is the most common and can be used for all flower types delicate or sturdy flowers. This is the hanging method. To do this you need to select the flowers you want to use and remove the greenery from the stems to have a better air circulation. Then tie together small bunches of flowers and hang them in a dry dark place, such as an attic or closet. This method will take 2-3 weeks for the flowers to dry and you want to make sure the area remains dark to preserve the color. Flowers dried in this method will remain strong in their preserved state for up to 1 year and then there color will darken and they will become to brittle. The next method for preserving flowers is for more sturdy flowers like roses. This is with cat litter. I mentioned this one in my cat litter uses video that I did earlier and you can click on the i card here or the link below to go and watch that if your curious what else you can do with cat litter. Now you will need a box or container big enough to hold the flowers you choose laying down on there sides. You can cut off most of the stem or separate them from the flower to dry to make things easier. In most flowers when drying the stem will become very brittle and brake, although rose stems are quite strong they may be an exception. In most cases a fake stem is needed to reattach to the flower after drying. The cat litter method can be done it 2 ways. The first way you can simply pour the cat littler in a container and then place the flowers on top and gently more cat litter on top. Then set them aside in a dry dark place and they should be dry in about 10 days. For a faster method you can take a microwave safe container and fill with cat litter then place flowers and then cover with cat litter and dry flowers in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Let cool and then remove the cat litter from flowers and they should be dry. I don't even own a microwave so I was going to attempt this method with my oven. So I am going to place my kitty litter in this pot and then flowers and then cover with kitty litter. The I was going to let cook in my preheated oven at 350 for 10 minutes and see what happens.
The next method is Oven dried Flowers. This one I was very interested in because it was fast and easy and I had all the equipment. You need to remove the stems on your flowers completely. You can use all types of flowers as well on this one. Lay the flowers out on drying racks and bake them in the oven at about 150 to 200 degrees for 1-2 hours. Make sure you check them every half hour. Smaller flowers will dry faster then large ones so make sure you take that into account when you are trying this method. These babies breath flowers should be dried within 1 hour.
The last method is the borax method. For this you will need 2 parts borax to 1 part sand and 1 tsp. salt to help retain color while drying. This method takes 2-3 weeks to preserve flowers.
Results. I did the kitty litter in the oven method and the flowers dried well after 10 minutes, but were squeezed and not the same looking. The flowers I dried in the oven were dry after 1 hour and they looked almost exactly like the original flower. I am very happy with this method and will try it again.
