The developer has deleted all the bloatware from standard windows making it run pretty lean and also added some QoL changes like the ability to suspend/resume the deck, Auto boot into Steam Big Picture(which is essentially the steam deck GUI) and so forth. It really is pretty cool and its nice that it feels like SteamOS but can play games that only support Windows. I just bought a 2TB ssd and will be dual booting SteamOS(for better Emulation performance) and WinDeck for my Windows only games(looking at you Bungie, make Destiny support Linux pls).

IF YOU USE AN EXTERNAL MONITOR PLEASE READ: One thing I feel needs to be mentioned about the REFind boot loader is that it starts to glitch out if you use steam deck with an external monitor. The boot loader will always appear in a glitched portrait view and if you try and boot windows while it's in this glitched state, it causes the graphics driver to crash with a BSOD. Sometimes it will make it to the login screen and then BSOD after you try to login as well. The only way I've found to avoid this is by booting windows without any form of external monitor attached, then plug your monitor in and it works perfectly. I'm unsure if it's an issue with REFind or the graphics driver but keep this in mind if your planning to dual boot.

Nice Guide! Here a helpfull information for Windows, turn off fast startup to avoid problems with dual Boot. (This will not have any performace impact.) 1. Navigate to the Control Panel and select ‘Power Options.’ 2. Choose ‘Choose what the power buttons do.’ 3. Click on ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable.’ 4. Under ‘Shutdown settings,’ uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ box. And reboot Windows.

Amazing guide, it was extremely helpful specially the dual boot and drivers installation. What I ended up doing is cloning my original SSD to my new 1TB SSD using Clonezilla, partitioning the new SSD in half and installing W11 in the fresh partition. This way SteamOS stayed intact without needing to reinstall it and my games from scratch. Also, when trying to do the partition the SteamOS recovery image in an SD card was taking too long to load and was kinda buggy, so I tried with a Kubuntu ISO I already had in an SD and it worked like a charm. Thank you again, you got a new sub!

Been using this since you posted the procedure, works great. Occasionally you need to boot directly into steam by locating the efi file and fixing refind (method on the jloebue10 refind page) when a big OS update comes out and breaks the boot, but other than that it's so incredibly easy. Thanks for the great video.

This was really helpful - thanks! Though I wasn't able to boot into the Steam OS recovery image using a micro SD card as shown in the video. I kept getting stuck on the Steam Deck boot logo even with different micro SD cards, and I tried using both Rufus and etcher to flash the image (Windows 11 pc). The solution for me was getting a USB 3.0 stick from Amazon and connecting it the dock instead. Also, I think that the "What You Need" section in the beginning of the video could have used a bit more clarity. Only one USB stick or micro SD card is in fact needed, not two - since you can flash the Steam OS recovery, use it for partitioning the SSD, then flash the Windows installer onto the same drive and use it a second time.

I do not understand why this will not work for me, but when I try and boot from the SD card it just sits on the Deck logo, and when I try to go into the partition manager the Ext4 drive is padlocked. Ideas? Edit: I figured it out! The issue was that I was using an out-of-date Steam recover file, and for some reason my Deck did not like using an SD card. Once I combined the latest recovery file and a USB 3.0 flash drive, I was finally able to get it to work. This was a really fun project, and your tutorial was fantastic, thanks so much for sharing this.

Hi. Why don't you use WinDeckOS instead of a full installation of Windows? Can you dual-boot SteamOS-WindDeckOS and make a video on it?

Thank you so so much for this amazing guide! It all went very smooth and I've been switching between Windows and Steam OS quite a bit for testing and it all is working just the way I wanted it to work. I had some small troubles here and there but nothing major and I'm really happy with the results all thanks to you and the programmers! huge shoutout❤

@@user-hh4hc2lt6e I did fixed it. Althought, I used another tutorial and another dual boot setup. I used Clover instead. Also, I took Windows 10, because I heard that some Windows updates could screw it up sometime (not sure if it's true, but I did anyway). I assumed there would be less system/critical updates on windows 10 compared to 11. I used this tutorial first : kzitem.info/news/bejne/w6WvwGZtkp2Wm4I to install Windows on a second partition. Once it's done, the two OS are only accessible from the Boot menu of the deck (Vol- and Power) Once the two OS are installed, I used this tutorial for Clover : kzitem.info/news/bejne/kmdoqKttgH-ifX4 Do you have a lot of things installed on your deck right now? Just so you know, except for loosing Data, it is almost impossible to completly broke the steam deck software wise. Worst case scenario would be starting all over.

Hi guys, has anyone had issues since the latest Steam update? I was able to install everything and it worked effortlessly for months. I launched a steam OS update about 2 days ago because I was logged out of my Steam libary and unable to play games. Now whenever I turn on my steam deck Windows is automatically launched and I can't get acces to the dual boot screen or I don"t know how to open Steam. Can anyone help, please?

Lovely Video. Thank you! Though I watched your old video of dual boot first but I couldn't make it to work after last steps where I changed the Microsoft rename into Deck and started only seeing Steam OS to boot. Do I have to redo all the steps of the old video before starting this one? Or I can just simply go with this installation guide and it will overwrite my old attempt and steps? Thanks again I just found out about your channel and I see very valuable and useful videos. Much appreciated.

Don't know what was going on with his steam deck to make him say it but I actually just put the drivers on the same usb drive that I set up the windows install on and put them on the steam deck and extracted them they took like a second to extract each one. Could be he has the 64gb drive but i have a 1tb nvme ssd in mine and it had no speed issues.

Turn your steam deck completely off, get a USB-C dock, and plug in a flash drive to the dock that has the SteamOS recovery image on it, then while holding down the volume down button press the power button once. Your steam deck will boot into the boot menu, select your flash drive from the options and you begin the process of erasing your steam deck and having a fresh install of steamos on it :)

Just having windows on an sd seems faster than dual booting(the whole process i mean) all i have to do, is turn the deck off, take out the 1tb sd card, put the windows sd card in, turn on, choose boot drive, then boom windows, you can’t switch in between steam os and windows, but the process is as simple as doing it over but backwards. Turn the deck off, take out sd, put in steam sd, turn on deck and choose the right boot drive and boom

The performance on Micro SD running an OS + Games is a bad idea, I don't recommend it. The longevity of the Micro SD is compromised due to the stress created from Read/Write operations. It's great to Boot Windows from the Micro SD to try it out before committing to the Internal drive, but the performance will be vastly inferior when running from the Micro SD.

@@DeckWizard I’ve been using it to play call of duty, i haven’t seen any problems so far. It all depends on what you use it for. For me it’s just the two Mw2019 and MwII. So unless you’re playing higher graphic depending games, sd cards are fine for windows

Amazing walkthrough, thank you so much for the video! I followed Balsealion guide to complete the Windows setup as well. However, now I am experiencing an issue with Game Pass games. Most of them are crashing at the launch screen. I have gathered a lot of info stating that upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 helps drastically with this issue. Can I upgrade my installed Windows 10 to 11 without any issues?

I recently upgraded the SSD and dual booted windows thanks to your old tutorial. I'm just wondering, is it normal for games to run worse on Win11 than the SteamOS?
@bloadstar
Жыл бұрын
I know they can because steamos compiles game shaders and windows doesn't. This helps games launch and run smoother. Also, (to my understandings) games are each tailored to be optimized on steamos while they're "as is" on windows (having general improvements provided by manufacturer and hardware developers with drivers e. T. C) So in short, yes, it can happen
@lrdalucardart
Жыл бұрын
Yes it is. Because Windows as lots of useless shit running in the background that contributes jack for gaming(its mainly a OS for multy-porpoises and office use), meanwhile SteamOS was created with the solo porpoise of running and playing games, so they have turned off almost anything that can compromise for that Linux OS version which in turn makes it much smoother on the steam deck and less battery taxing too.
