I agree with this video 100%, I was never able to grow my hair past shoulder length when I was in Middle School because I straighten my hair everyday because it was ugly and frizzy and I let sooo many split ends accumulate. Once I started my first year in high school I chopped off all my hair and stop straightening it except for special occasions if I needed to and from there I started doing dustings instead of trims and it really has made a world of a difference. In the first two years of dusting my ends instead of having them trimmed I was able to grow my hair from shoulder length all the way down to my butt in a span of two years which is a pretty good rate but thankfully dusting the ends really do help. I only cut my hair once a year and usually it's about 2 to 3 in and the split ends are very minimal mostly just from weather damage since I am constantly taking care of my hair and giving it everything it needs. However I always pay attention to my ends and make sure that if they really do need to be trimmed then I will do that instead of dusting but I believe that dusting my hands have really helped in length retention 💞✨🙏

You can S&D or Seek and Destroy only your split ends. Make sure you're in good lighting and have good hair cutting scissors. You snip a little above every split end that you find. You will not lose length this way. You can also take sections of hair and twist them to make split ends pop out more. That way you can get the split ends that are throughout your hair bc not all split ends are only at the bottom of your hair. This is a good method for if you're trying to grow your hair, bc really the one of the main ways to grow your hair is to NOT CUT IT! You can do this method as often as you feel like, but don't become obsessive with it bc it can mess with how your hemline looks if you do it obsessively. Happy growing!

You are an angel for posting this! I've found one hairdresser who will actually just do a dusting but I can't travel to see her right now because of covid and I have severe trust issues after spending years going out my hair. My situation is similar. My stylist won't touch anything other than my length as I have some badly cut layering plus some newer growth. However, I would not have the patience for this but I pre poo with oil and I then, as often as I can, take a good feel of my hair and carefully, from just above where I can feel a split that has moved up the hair shaft I trim that strand. I don't get terribly many splits but doing as I do, at least I feel like the shorter parts of my hair get something in the way of a trim!

I have been cutting my own hair since your at-home videos have been coming out (first on Amanda, and then the pigtail ones you did on yourself). It works splendidly when I already have layers built into my hair from a stylist. However, as time wears on, my layers are getting less and less dramatic, sending me back to my junior high days of a single length - triangle - Janis Joplin hair! Ah! Can you make a video on how to do more DRAMATIC layering into your hair at home, or is there no solution but to go to a stylist for that?
@ManesByMell
3 жыл бұрын
the more dramatic, the SCARIER but i'm actively trying tot think of ways to make these things easier for you to do! when doing the pigtails cut, place those ponies HIGH on your head close to the middle part for more length off the layers or in the meantime see a pro until my next video! I couldn’t help but check the price of those scissors and I am blown away, no wonder you got so nervous when amanda was using them (in another video) like wow! They look perty though. I would definitely like to try this dusting thing, as long as im in a patient mooood lolol thanks! Have been trying to grow it out so this is very helpful, thanks Mel 😉

I can do my ends. If attempting to dust higher I can't see. How are you seeing your hair? If I look in a mirror it is too far away to see the tiny ends to clip. Please show us how you do your head other than the front. thanks :)

I do want to get my hair style like you but for some reason no matter what I tell hairstylists they want to make my curly hair neat cut and it looks to perfect and straight. I want layers and I never get it because they always say oh you don’t want it to be wild. I say yes I like it and they blow me off. I have yet to find somebody that listens . But if I have my hair straight they will do exactly what I ask. But not when I have it permed. So I guess I will be trying to learn to do my own. And your videos are the ones they are going to get me there lol!

Weird question but are they white because they do that sometimes they don’t know a thing about curly hair, it doesn’t even matter the race because a white girl cuts my curls and she’s amazing at it she’s a curl specialist, you need an actual curl specialist to cut your hair not some straight hair shop

This is great info!! Always the best curly hair videos with Mel and Amanda! Are you working at a salon right now Mel? I do not live in Canada but wouldn’t mind making a trip! 😅

How about the really short strands with split ends that are on my crown and top of my head? I get the urge to trim them, should I? Thanks!!

What if your hair is only chin length and you can’t see back of hair? I can’t hold a mirror and cut at the same time, lol. I guess everyone who has commented has hair long enough to bring to the front.

I would assume that you can still do it because you can feel where the very tip of your hair is and you can still bring the scissors right above your hair when you pull it straight like she does
