Is it wise to trust the previous paint job? I mean, you're not sanding down to the wood but only like half way through the clear coat. How do you know what KIND of paint or clear was on there and whether the new paint and primer will actually play nice and stick? Yes, I see how not sanding it all off will save a lot of time and by extension, money. Just wondering why and when you would not sand all of it off. thx
@IronGordon

I was 99% sure it was a factory paint job from Gibson, and they use a nitrocellulose lacquer as a finish. That type of lacquer can be painted over with paint that uses acetone as a thinner. The Rust-Oleum filler primer I used is an acrylic based with acetone thinner. So that's why I didn't take it to the wood, and regardless of the type of paints that are used, at the very least you would want to sand the old finish to a provide a tooth for the the new paint to grab into. Great question, thanks for asking!

@@IronGordon I checked out rustoleum primer and glitter paint on amazon from your link. 51% 1 star reviews I think on the glitter one. ! So, I am still trying to find a primer that will work. @IronGordon
3 жыл бұрын
Thank You! What are the risk of sanding the nitro?
@nocturnal101ravenous6
3 жыл бұрын
@@IronGordon Well wet sanding a guitar in general can cause issues, If it contacts the wood it will raise the grain, when wet sanding you need to be extra extra careful not to have the water enter any surfaces like Bridge holes and such, Luthiers I notice use wads of tape and/or use Oil to oat the wood before wet sanding in those cavities, if it is nitro based finish if that water raises the grain under the finish it will increase risk of it chipping off or raising the paint in those areas. Nitro has a weird curing time and also when freshly painting a guitar you need to have it cure before wet sanding otherwise it will cause issues in the finish and or you will end up with moisture contained within your finish. Problems may not be seen initially but over time. So typically Wet sanding is better left to people more experienced as well as you can leave sanding marks in the finish if its a fresh Nitro paint. Personally, I think its a relic of the past,. and it really doesn't change tone unless you are using Acoustic or a Les Paul or Hollow body style guitar when Body resonance changes the tone a great deal, something like a Strat/Tele/Jem style guitar the body woods don't really matter as much as all your Tone and sound is more from the Hardware used, its why a $200-300 Squire can really match a $2k American Standard by doing a bit of work swapping for higher quality parts, and a Jem that uses Zinc on the Floyd Rose rather than a good steel with a Brass Block makes a much more better impact than if your Body is Alder/Ash/Mohag. or the finish applied to it, In those cases you want a more resistant Body Finish and wood just to be better at damage resistance, and in that case a Acrylic Lacquer like Duplicolor is better and dries faster as long as your within the Temp/Humidity requirements.

Hey sorry for the delay in getting back to you, If you are using this method I layed out here i would recommend do the glaze coat to cover the glitter. the Rust-oleum glitter comes out extremely textured and would be hard to tape a design over. I would prep the plastic, then use an adhesion promoter heres a link. amzn.to/2RthkyT and then instead of the triple thick glaze I would just skip to the 2k clear. Its going to be a little more automotive outdoor quality. heres another link amzn.to/2XrmcbS just build up your clear coat with light coats until the glitter is covered. You might be able to get away with a standard rust-oleum clear coat, i just don't know the out door longevity of it. This way may be a little more expensive but since the plastic fender is going to flex more you'll want to do the adhesion promoter and the triple thick glaze might crack on something real flexible.

@@IronGordon sorry mate another question - it like the previous paint job was more of a stain than an epoxy finish and it would have needed sealing, if a guitar has already got the primer/sealer etc previously done then could I potentially just scuff the old epoxy back to paint and then just do my base coat of Black over the top and work off the previously sealing and paint job? I used one of each. I only used the glaze because of the glitter. The glaze builds up nice and thick to bury the glitter, so if you are eliminating the glitter the glaze won't be 100% necessary. You should use a clear for sure and could use the glaze if you wanted to. I like the 2k clear, it's automotive quality and really durable, it's just a little pricey at $20ish a can.

Great video. I like doing things on the cheap and I'm kind of impatient by nature, so this was just what I needed. I did a partscaster with gold glitter and it came out pretty good for a first shot. The one comment I might make is that the glitter paint spray comes out with more pressure and greater volume than I thought and the first coat was a disaster. I was too close and I gobbed it on. A couple of huge runs and I was done for the day. I had to let it sit, then sand it off, then repaint the base gold and start the glitter all over. Tested my patience big time. The second time I stood about 3 feet away and just dusted the guitar body. Same thing with the clear coat. Stand back and dust. Build slowly. Take like....10 minutes. Thanks

Oh dang that sucks... I was concerned about thecoverage as well because this glitter spray paint is essentially a clear coat that has colored glitter in it. that's why I lay down a base color of the metallic silver to get everything to be a consistent silvertone. I'm sure you knew all that but I'm just reiterating for anybody who might read this in the future!

BEWARE! I followed these instructions to a T, and got a great finish! BUT...that Triple Thick Glaze is still soft a month later. :-( It feels fine if you run your hands across it, but if you push your fingernail into it a bit, it'll leave a mark. Apparently on a lot of the guitar refinish forums, that can be an issue with the Triple Thick Glaze clear, even after the first thin application. Best to try a different clear coat. ;-)

I absolutely do not want to know Billie Armstrong and painting over original Gibson's should be criminal! Juniors are meant to be tobacco burst. Now SG's are another story. Any colour than Red or black makes them interesting, check the new Epiphone Muse models.

Love the look of that! Some of the things you did here, I've seen recommendations against. Just to be clear - I am not an expert at all, I have just tried to read up on spray painting this past year so as to not mess up my own projects - so that's where the info below comes from. The first thing that went against what most people recommend, was sanding with 1000 grit on the primer, before applying the colour coat. Since acrylic lacquer relies on mechanical adhesion, a 1000 grit surface is too smooth for the paint to stick properly over time, and you risk peeling after a year or so. The highest grit I've seen recommended for good adhesion is 400. Some people won't go higher than 220. When using nitrocellulose lacquer, you don't need to worry about adhesion, because nitrocellulose melts into itself. Acrylic lacquer does not. The second thing is that you sprayed so many coats within such a short time period. The general rule I've seen is max 6 coats, divided into 2 spraying sessions, over the space of one day. Supposedly, too many coats within too short a time can cause the non-evaporated solvents to get trapped inside the paint job, which will cause imperfections over time. I hope your job stays awesome. But in case it doesn't, hopefully the above pointers will help for your next job, or for anyone else.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I too am not an expert, and all I have to go off of is my own experience, double referencing articles, blogs, and videos on the internet. Looking back at it now I agree with you, I would have used a higher grit paper between primer and base coat, but only into the 600-800 range. 400 seems a bit aggressive and is still a grit that is used for sanding out imperfections, and had this paint job not had a glitter coat on top of the base coat probably would have shown sanding marks. Personally, I have heard of breaking up paint session but I believe that working with spray paint, waiting for a few hours to 24 hours between coats would be more likely to cause paint failure. (You would be better off waiting 48 and then scuffing the paint before reapplying.) ideal re-coat times are 10- 20 minutes not exceeding an hour, based on 21°C/70°F - 50% relative humidity. Trapped solvents would reveal themselves relatively quick while painting, through the paint cracking. I used all acrylic paints in this project and that's where the 10 minute flash off time comes in play, the acrylics I used would still chemically bond with each other as long as you don't exceed the flash off point of about an hour according to the manufacturer. While lacquers need more dry time between coats and can melt chemically into themselves. You could make an argument for the paint remaining soft when too many coats are applied but once I did let it fully cure before sanding and polishing the paint was hard and crack/ wrinkle free. I'm not wanting to misleading anyone, (and I'm NOT saying you are accusing me of doing so) I'm just showing how I achieved a killer metal flake finish with economical paint that just about anyone can get a hold of. All I can do is show people the final results I had. since this guitar has been finished it's been about 6 months and has been on at least one active tour through the greater parts of Mexico with its band and still looks like the day it left my shop... Thank you for commenting and thank you for your approach with your comment. There is more than one way to skin a cat, or in our case paint a guitar 😁

Hey man, thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge! After I watched this, I stripped apart a tele clone that I have and I repainted it. It wasn't perfect, but the other tele clone I ripped down and did a gold flake on is almost done. It's getting glazed today, and hopefully it comes out well. I wish I had the skill to do the next level job you did, but I'm not there yet. That Virgin Mary guitar paint job is bloody amazing, BTW. I think I may try to do either a jazz master or a les paul jr eventually. One question- can I use something like seafoam green as a base color and then hit it with silver flake, or will the silver overpower it totally? Anyway, thanks for sharing the knowledge!

I saw Billy Zoom play a Gretsch in similar silver sparkle finish in '82 and his tone destroyed, not the other way around. Brian Setzer has a Gretsch signature model with a green sparkle finish. They're all applied in a similar way. Base primer, color coat, glitter, then thick clear glaze

Just watched your videos for this guitar. Absolutely awesome job. I am in no way, shape, or form a painter, so I've been doing a lot of research and your videos have been extremely helpful. I plan to paint an Xbox Series S, but I don't want to just slap on a can of black paint. Your videos have giving me some great ideas. My plan is to have the the base color be black, but I want to have a rich metal flake effect, and a hint of purple, or maybe Xbox green, kind of like flashing through the paint as it is viewed it from different angles. (I don't know how to properly explain it.) This is a project I'll complete over the next few months, as I have take time collecting all the various things I'll need (budget constraints), but I'm going to keep watching your videos and learning. When I'm ready to start, I think I might record my process and upload to KZitem. Anyway, just wanted to say, you're awesome and thanks for sharing your skills.

Hello IronGordon ,I want to do the same with rust oleum orange glitter,but can I use Metallic Silver Spray before glitter ?Thank
@IronGordon
5 жыл бұрын
You could, however if you painted an orange base coat instead of the metallic silver your orange glitter would be more vibrant. Remember the Rust-Oleum glitter paint is essentially a clear coat with colored glitter in it, so what ever color you use as a base coat is going to show through a little bit between the glitter. Hope that helps keep me posted on your project!
