I'm a chemist... 3 things you did kind of wrong. [1] mixing thoroughly. You didn't. Basically, you have to vigorously shake it back and forth (in your plastic cylinder) to the point where the water is almost slurried into the gasoline. That's how it then has the surface area to absorb the ethanol. [2] Waiting before draining: You didn't wait long enough. Once quite broken into droplets, it'll take overnight to come out of suspension. The temperature drop at night helps too. [3] Coloring the water. Using red or blue or green cake decorating color, you should color up the water before starting. This way, you'll be much surer as to when ALL the water is gone. It might take a week... Literally. Lastly, though not "wrong", you could /or/ should have been decanting the gasoline floating on top of the water-gas mixture that was drained into the glass jug, back into the cylinder at the top. Gently pour off what seems to be gasoline. You combine that with what seems to be water in your water-recovery jugs. (It should take about 2 gallons of jugs). Every time you drain off a gallon of moose juice from the bottom of the big cylinder, let it sit overnight, then decant back into the big cylinder, and into the water-recovery jugs. Keep it up, and eventually you'll have done a good job removing the ethanol and water. Sadly, removing the ethanol will LOWER the octane rating of the gasoline. Well ... actually ... it just exposes that the makers of gasoline are not only getting Federal subsidies for using corn ethanol in a "green" effort, but they're able to capitalize on using WAY-BELOW-GRADE gasoline as the fuel stock. Like maybe 80 octane or less. Lots of knocking in your engine!!! Otherwise ... high-fives for doing this and making a video. Good job, man. GoatGuy

To add to that, Robert; quite literally he took 10 gallons of 93 octane gasoline and produced 2 gallons of hazardous waste with nine gallons of ~maybe hi-test left over. Not sure what state he lives in, but I can buy non-ethanol fuel (for a bit more money), if I go out of my way for it (which I do for my carbureted lawn stuff/chain saws). And I don't have to dispose of two gallons of gasoline diluted water. That extra gallon of hi-octane he took off certainly offsets the price of non-ethanol fuel, and around here, disposing of that two gallons of diluted gas is either a pain-in-the-ass to do it right, or illegal if you just dump it somewhere. I hope he isn't just dumping it. I hunt and fish, so I'm kind of a dick about people dumping shit. Yea, I hate the corn juice. But, I have easier and safer options. My fuel injected cars and motorcycle are fine with it, it's the carbureted stuff that it kills if you aren't diligent. Oh, and I'm not a chemist or a skinny-jeans-wearing tree-hugging-hippy either. I just don't want people watching this vid to go dumping the by-product into the storm drains. We got enough meth producers around here poisoning the earth with no regard. /mini-rant

You also didn't mention that the container is sitting flat, which means he cannot get ALL of the separated water/ethanol out of the container. He either needs to tilt the container so that it will all move to the exit OR buy a container with a cone-shaped bottom for easy removal with far less gasoline coming out with it.

I hauled gasoline for a living for many years... recently retired from doing that. The gasoline which is mixed with ethanol in most cases is what we called "sub grade"... it was only about 85 octane. The 10% ethanol brought octane up to 87. With your premium, depending on where you buy it, you could be losing some octane by doing this. But if you can get it truly clean, it'll still be worth it. Stations in our part of Virginia still sell no-ethanol gas. Find a shoreline station where boats fill up... most of that will be ethanol free (though not cheap).

You ideally need a funnel bottom vessel with a valve in the center of the funnel this way you are sure all the water is remove. Also, blue or red food color in the water makes is very easy to see the separation line. The key here is you must mix the water and gasoline completely . The last step is let the mixture set for at least 24 hours, this stuff doesn't get absorbed in 5 minutes. The more water drops you make in the gasoline the better it will absorb the ethanol. I actually use a fuel rated pump to pump the gasoline inside the container. Once the fuel and water hit the impeller of the pump it forces the alcohol to bind. I pump it for twenty to thirty minutes and then make sure its in the funnel down position. After 24 hours I get a complete separation and just drain off the water/ethanol mix. The slower you drain it out the better it works also. As stated in another comment, if you do the math, 10% of the volume of gas is ethanol so you get the gallon of water and 10% of whatever quantity of gas you added.

You can also put it in your vehicle, it will cost more but in my truck it can deliver better than 50% more mileage so I can afford to pay at least that much more not to mention getting a power increase. I understand some states have outlawed ethanol gas and the ones that sell it have no specific laws as to the percentage content which can vary all over the place, 5% is not necessarily 5%, nor is 10% necessarily 10%, etc. Ethanol gas also makes our food supply cost more as there is less cattle feed etc., have you noticed what a loaf of bread sells for now ? Ethanol gas should be illegal.

+Biana Doubt Sorry, but you have been misinformed. Here are some verifiable current ethanol fuel facts, look them up on reputable up to date sites and learn the factual truth. Ethanol is a cost effective, safe fuel oxygenate, cleaner and octane booster. Ethanol is used as a fuel oxygenate and octane booster additive in most every country on the planet, not just the US. Since 2010 the "American taxpayer" has not subsidized ethanol for fuel. Ethanol production does not take food off of the table, ethanol is produced from a specific variety of corn optimised for ethanol production that is not edible by humans, the corn waste from producing ethanol is high in protein and is sold as animal feed feedstock. Currently (08-26-2018) the US national average retail regular E10 gasoline is $2.839 USD per USG and the raw cost to produce that gasoline including the ethanol content is approximately $1.496 USD per USG.

@integr8er66
6 жыл бұрын
Twinky UnOuWaNtMyCrEaMFiLlInG well it doesn't really matter how the water gets there, I used a vacuum port and a needle valve for mine, but regardless, water does not chemically change when absorbed by ethanol, so when it goes through the combustion process it still turns to steam. This does 2 things, cools the cylinder, and combines with any carbon to clean the combustion chamber preventing hot spots that can cause pre ignition. Actually, it probably robs a bit of power considering some BTUs are used up in the conversion tp steam, but the cleaning factor was what I was after

Ethanol in Gas (Petrol over here in the UK) is a major problem as it destroys fuel systems. On plastic/resin fuel tanks (Common on modern bikes) it make the tanks expand (To the point where they won't fit the bike anymore), causes bleeding through the tanks destroying the paint. It's a disaster all round. Something to bear in mind though when you remove the ethanol is that ethanol has a higher octane rating then petrol (Sorry gas!) so if you remove it, the fuel remaining has a lower octane rating than what you started out with. Therefore if you don't then add some sort of octane booster you will likely damage your engine due to pre-ignition etc.

Interesting idea. I actually had this happen in a UTV's gas tank over the past winter, condensation caused the ethanol to separate out of the fuel and settle in the bottom of the tank. Cleaned the carb and it still wouldn't fire, the fuel pickup is near the bottom of the tank and it was sucking the water/alcohol mix instead of gasoline. Cleaned the carb again, drained the tank into a translucent racing fuel can and once it had settled the problem was obvious. Siphoned the gas off the top back into the UTV's tank and it started right up. I dumped the leftover water/ethanol/gas mix in my truck, it's EFI and was already 3/4 full of fuel and burned it without issue.

Ethanol damages engines, and is especially bad for old cars like that one in the background. It shortens the life of engine components even in the newest cars, meaning more frequent overhauls are needed. Like many green ideas it does not actually reduce CO2 emissions because of the energy used to make ethanol. Think of it as moonshine, for that is what it is. It is made from fermented corn which is then distilled several times to get as pure alcohol as possible. Distilling requires heat to boil the liquid, which is probably provided by fracked gas. Ethanol is one of the biggest cons ever perpetrated on the public.

@OverlandOne

Well, the problem with doing this is that ethanol is used to boost the octane of the gasoline. So, if you remove the ethanol from say, 93 octane gas, you are left with about 69 octane fuel which will destroy any engine you try to use it in. Of course you can add your own "octane booster" but, if you read on the label, most, if not all, of these contain....wait for it...ethanol. This is a ridiculous waste of time but, have at it if you want.
@AZsmoothrider
6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I have to disagree. While it boosts octane marginally (e15 is 88 octane), less than 10% is added to metro area gas. Ethanol is NOT added in rural areas nor in most large cities during certain parts of the year. It is added to reduce emissions. Period. If it's in your local gas, it's in the 87, 89, 91 octane. It's in all of it. It is required by DEQ to be added. Not the car industry (it attracts moisture and corrosion, they don't like it), and not the fuel or refinery industries because it's expensive and less profitable than straight gas. Corn farmers love it. And If you're running older lower compression engines, you are in fact, getting less power from it because it's less volatile.

Well, I have to disagree with what you just posted. I work at a company that owns 450 gas stations and I am friends with the guy responsible for testing the fuel and maintaining the pumps. He is the one that told me this. He said the major difference in the grades is that there is more ethanol added to the higher octane fuels which is how they get from 87 to 89 and 91, etc. He also said it is in our gas all year long and sometimes, there is more than the 10% "claimed" by the refineries. I live in a rural area and all of our gas has ethanol in in. There is one station 20 miles away that has pure gasoline but, they charge an extra $1.50/gal. over the price charged for all of the other gas with ethanol. I am sure this varies from state to state or region to region.

Ok... so then how did we get higher octane way before the days of adding ethanol to pump gas for emissions reductions? decades ago. you may work for a gas station company and know a guy. cool. but oil refineries been making high test decades before politics removed lead or added alcohol to the scene and watered shit down. Again, I will state, claim, and defend- the only reason for ethanol is political. there is no ethanol in high octane race gas. (top fuel is a whole other topic) and if you run e85 in your low compression turbo setup well, then, your golden when in boost. boils down to: ethanol fucks up your shit but lowers smog emissions. not a performance gain for average rig.

After consulting a friend who works for a LARGE fuel company as an actual chemist blending current fuels and having him watch this he just started laughing at the shear ignorance of people doing this. The fuel left over is no longer complete and will do more damage than your THINKING you stopping. It's complete lunacy to EVER do this ignorant thing to fuel. Your not just removing ethanol but other component that make up the fuel. He tested several brands of fuel straight of the pump, did this same trick. And the highest octane rating he found was just over 78. From E10 87 octane and when he test burned it found it caused quite a bit of residue and carbon deposits inside tester and then he tried it on an actual engine Dyno, first with gas from pump, then thus mess, and found it lost 12%to 18% in power AND put out some seriously corrosive products out the tail pipe.

I had gas stored for emergency for a few years before using it. Was in plastic barrels that allowed some water in through the bungs. I separated the water out (sinks to bottom) and burned the "very yellow" GASOLINE in a generator (ran near continuous for a couple of weeks). Carbon deposits built up severely on the valves and valve springs to the point where one valve eventually stuck open. I did not take the head off so not sure what it looked like inside the cylinder. ( To fix - I just sprayed PBlaster on the valve stem while holding the valve stem tip with vise grips - spinning and pushing up and down until it would operate without sticking) I think running good gas will clear some of the deposits out. I have heard that SeaFoam can speed the cleaning if needed.

Monza is correct in his info. If the presenter was able to extract the Ethyl added to gasoline by the refinery/blender then he has returned the petroleum to its initial substandard grade. Probably low 80s Research Octane. Since some refineries know they are going to add ethyl, they don't bother producing 87 gasoline anymore. Low 80s trash gas, usually with pollutants like benzene still in it. Add the Ethyl and the octane tests at 87. Alcohol also helps stabilize and suspend the pollutants and sour diesel elements, thus removing it produces a paraffin fuel that has an odor not unlike kerosene. Luckily the presenter is not doing chemistry, just an exercise in separation layers. He adds a gallon of water and removes just over a gallon of mostly water. He might be getting 6 oz of Ethyl/Petrol/Water that is milky. He didn't break the blend by simply adding water at room temperature.

@jacobs2309
7 жыл бұрын
This method removes ethanol but degrades the gasoline considerably. It lowers the octane rating considerably by not just removing the ethanol but by also removing the higher octane rated hydrocarbons that are also water soluble like toluene and benzene. You would have to add a considerably expensive amount of pure high octane rated hydrocarbon like toluene(100 octane) to correct for this. On top of that some water, albeit a very small amount, will dissolve into the gasoline which can over time lead to corrosion and damage to the fuel system of your engine. Please don't use this method on an engine you care about. Just buy ethanol free gas for your 2-stroke or 4-stroke that is designed only for ethanol free gas like many of the marine engines still are today.
@antonipeters2333

Benzene and toluene won't pick up that much water and most will not be removed, but the gas will be water saturated. So shitty performance is guaranteed. Also, you do not want to be playing with 10 gallons of gasoline like that.

how much toluene to add to 87 octane to raise to 100 octane? on a per gallon basis
@antonipeters2333

You ought to be able to get the numbers on the internet. Search for amounts of acetone and toluene for cleaner burn and raising octane, respectively. Should be something like 250 milliliters/10 gallons of each or about a cup of each/10 gallons. You will likely have to experiment to see what works best in your engine. I understand the acetone has a tendency to evaporate more quickly, so you may have to add more frequently. But go easy and do not try to run them alone without gasoline. Big changes in fuel composition will have negative consequences for your engine and potentially for your safety! I used to run the amounts I mentioned in my 6 cylinder SHO with reqular gas - worked fine but I didn't try to optimize it.

Tongue in cheek I hope! Don't light charcoal with this unless you want to eat the additives that are in gasoline such as detergents that keep your engine clean, anti-corrosion inhibitors to protect your fuel system, seal preservatives to prevent fuel leaks, and lubricants to reduce friction. Siphoning off the top layer of gasoline after mixing with water may remove some of these additives along with the ethanol (depending on the additives' affinity for alcohol and water).

Is this just because you can? DUH!!!

Take a little time and look up what ethanol does to small engines. There are no gas stations in my area that sell gas with no ethanol. My lawn equipment sits throughout the winter and does not run. Ethanol fuel absorbs water and can reek havoc on fuel systems over time. Fuel last longer without ethanol.

I fail to see the point of your comment. A. It's still cheaper than ethanol-free, which isn't even available in some areas. B. Disposal costs? You burn off the ethanol waste and you're left with water. C. Octane booster, or just start with 93 and you still get rendered between 88 and 90 if you do it right. D. Less wasted time than repairing a set of carburetors ruined by e10. But why am I telling you this? You're obviously an expert on everything.

@13thvarebel16

Yes absolutely true. I thought Koko was implying that the loss of octane during the phase separation process would basically ruin the gas. I meant if you started with 93 octane containing ethanol, it would no longer be 93 octane after phase separation and therefore if your vehicle needed 93 octane you could add a booster. In my case I wouldn't, my bike runs fine on 87 or 88 octane so I would still start with the 93 but I wouldn't try to boost the octane after removing the ethanol.

Well done video. I learned somethings when fuel separated in my gas tank and hired a company to try to remove the alcohol/water phase. Gasoline cannot mix with ethanol or water unless there is some type of emulsifier. Ethanol fuel uses sodium sulfate based emulsifier. Adding all that water into the drum neutralizes that emulsifier causing the separation. The water phase Is milky white from the suspended particles of sodium sulfate. These are microscopic particles that are very bad for an engine. They will deposit everywhere there is a connection or a small orifice and high temperature. These particles can destroy a fuel pump, check valve, or the fuel injector, so make sure that the gasoline phase is crystal clear and all of the sodium sulfate particles have been removed in the water phase. I was unable to filter out these particles in gas using 10 µm filters.
@hid3nax
Жыл бұрын
Very interesting information! Could you please clarify more on this? As far as I understand, sodium sulfate which is already present in fuel with ethanol, causes the issues you mentioned, right? Once you add water to gasoline, ethanol and sodium sulfate falls out of suspension and settles on the bottom of the container. Assuming you properly extract the gasoline which is on top, sodium sulfate won't be causing issues anymore. Is that correct?

Waiting longer definitely helps - maybe a couple of days even. Also, even after that long you will still have water droplets on the walls of the container. After you drain the water/ethanol mixture, add anhydrous magnesium sulfate powder, they will absorb more water the from the gas and swell like snowflakes at the bottom.
