pretty good video showing how to use the brackets that you insert a bolt into. However it would never pass code here in Cal. because he shoves it up into the corner and against a pvc pipe running behind the tank, no bueno. If the tank isn't snugly against the wall you need to install a block or something behind the HWT to stabilize it otherwise it will wobble during a earthquake the very thing you are trying to stop. Like most youtube videos you cant trust them to give you information that will pass a real building inspector.

He made it real simple to understand and gave you other options if your water heater fits differently

Thank you sir! I bought the exact same straps at my local hardware store. I opened the box read the instructions…immediately looked for a video to see how the J brackets work. This came up in an inspection, I am an able 63 year old woman. The parts intimated me because I know I need to really lean in to get the screws in the wall studs. But, thanks again for making the installation simple and clear!

I’m sorry real quick, I just noticed it’s drywall on my wall. Can I just add anchors then screw on the screws. I just tried doing it exactly how you did it but the bolts won’t hold on because it’s drywall. Help me please

@@thewiseguy7100 the hard way to do it is to keep putting a screw in and moving over about an inch until you find a stud

The studs run vertically, so should be knocking and listening for something solid horizontally

How heavy was that water heater? You moved it like it was a helium balloon. Nice work!

Can you bolt it to the drywall? Or does it need to have wood board to screw on

@@constructionhacks9293 Thank You for the fast reply.. I just purchased the same straps from Home Depot but do you think there’s something simpler than running bolts through the wall? Like maybe just a ratchet type strap.. I’m asking because my house is old

@@thewiseguy7100 if you’re looking for something that will hold temp wise, if you could find some thick plumbing tape, which is the metal strapping with holes in it and do a couple wraps top middle bottom that might be a temporary solution until you find something else. It doesn’t meet code but it’s an option.
