Turn the tank around WHY DIN’T I THINK OF THAT?!? It’s because it’s on the wheelie horse and I didn’t want to have to chop into the hood. I want to keep it as original as possible. Also, gas would then run out of the vent hole, down the hood and get all over me when doing wheelies. So THAT’s why I didn’t “just turn the tank around” And THERE’s Your Dinner!!

I have a friend who wanted me to weld a patch over a rusted out fitting on an air compressor tank. Every aspect of that request is rather scary to me, I responded with a quick NO. First don't try and repair a rusted tank that holds pressure and next, just some compressor oil on the metal around where you are welding. Those heated oil fumes/smoke make for some nice quick combustion. Nice knowing you buddy....

Just a note that works pretty good for me; (I was told by a fellow machine repairman who had over 30 experience rebuilding machines) stop your pipe tap around the 11th cutting flute from the tip for proper finished diameter/depth. I've used that method from 1/8 to 3/4 NPT and works for me. Sometimes it's just a simple standard that makes your work consistant that can be overlooked. "And There's your Burger". Guess I needed my own outro company motto. Lol. Wait maybe "There's your Onions". Idk it's a work in progress I suppose...

That is correct about the depth guessing games a lot of us find that is the sweet spot on a tap. Before there were actual affordable fuel cells for building race cars there were fork lift fuel tanks ever beer kegs and old water expansion tanks from boilers. We used to convert em to fuel cells about like back from the 60s thru the 80s. Turns out my dad was a plumber and my grand father a WWI flying ace. My grand father told the stories on how they converted 5gal steel buckers and other stuff to make extra fuel tanks. The Germans always seemed to know where the French planes were gonna show up so they started adding extra fuel tanks so they could come from diff directions and get the upper hand on em. So I had some real talent behind teaching me.

I have a metal fab shop welded many gas tanks and brazed fittings on them. You can use CO2 in them for safety . Another trick is if you can get it carbontetracloride and rise one out leave a bit still in the tank will prevent a vapor explosion. I have heard stories of old timers hooking exhaust from a engine running to them that removes oxygen to do the same. Never have done it .

My concern with the exhaust method would be that unless you're using a modern car engine, you're probably going to have unburnt fuel and plenty of oxygen still coming out with the CO2 in the exhaust. I definitely wouldn't do it with a basic mower engine. You might end up making the mix worse.

Tyral Dioxide; When I was a kid, my neighbor gave me an antique Neptune outboard motor that leaked gas at the alumiumanum weld where it mounted. My Dad almost killed me when I was going to solder it with his solder gun (which wouldn't have worked anyway) He said I was going to blow myself up. And I know of one guy who blew up a 55 gal drum because it had dried paint inside it that became combustible fumes as he was cutting it open with a torch. So, I used an old vacuum cleaner to blow air into the gas tank on my car figuring I had enough air moving in and right back out to keep the concentration from reaching a combustible level. Then, I heated a block of steel up and tinned it, and used it as a soldering "copper". It worked, I stopped the seam leak, but thinking back, I felt the same way you do when you have a close call in a car accident situation: I felt like I "got away with it". I try not to have that feeling ever anymore. ben/ michigan

Someone probably said it somewhere below, but soldering with a torch (or welding) an old gas tank (even/especially if it is empty) requires some precautions ... I was glad you filled the tank with water!... but after the water is drained, gas fumes could accumulate enough to ignite. leaving the cap off might help vent combustion gasses if something lights off. Displacing the gas fumes and removing the oxygen by flooding the tank with CO2, nitrogen, or even steam from a teapot that is rigged to keep filling the tank with steam while you work with the flame, makes that solder job a lot safer. It’s not so much the gas fumes you can smell (or not) before you get started that’ll get ya; the fumes that are released from surface rust or creases/crimps in the tank when heated that can give you an underwear-filling surprise while soldering. 9 times outta 10, rinsing the tank with water and immediately doing the solder job is FINE. But that one time fumes ignite in there, it ranges from a quick scary whistling as the combustion gases rush out to a detonation that ruptures the tank or even launches fragments of the tank at you. Just sayin’ be careful working with gas tanks LOVE the content … especially when you remind folks that small engines/power equipment ain’t the Space Shuttle!

My grandfather told me about a farmer he knew that had a leaky gas tank on his Farmall tractor. He filled the tank with water so it would be safe. He proceeded to patch the leak until the tank blew. He was lucky. He picked himself up off the ground, took off his T-shirt, and there was a reverse imprint that said "Farmall" on his chest from the impact. Some people get away with it, and some don't. You really have to know what you're doing when it comes to repairing gas tanks, or it can go bad in an instant.

The hidden problem is the crimped seams. Over time fuel seeps into voids in the crimp through joints too tight for soapy water to reach, or even for fuel to evaporate when left open years. Heating the "cleaned" tank drives out the fuel as vapor, where it can reach an explosive concentration.

Oven and set it below solder melting point and let it dry the tank after you did the dish soap and water. I use to work at shop that only did gas tank renu and radiators. That was how we defumed the tanks so we could steel shot blast and braze on them. If ever you need to restore or save a gas tank that has holes no matter how rough it is as long as it still has the shape they can fix it with a life time warranty. Gas tank renu is the name.
