In this video, we are replacing the broken leaf springs on our Alumacraft FD-15 Galvanized Trailer. An Easy and cheap DIY project to do at home. Save $$$.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately I broke a leaf spring hitting a massive pothole after I got out of the lake a few weeks ago and I've been dreading replacing it because I've never tried it before. After watching this video I can see that it's actually quite simple. Thanks for taking the time to upload.

Another thing to consider, since it's a boat trailer, putting the spring on top of the axle makes the trailer carry the boat higher. Therefore, you have to put the trailer further in the water to "float" the boat off.

FYI it looks like you reinstalled a few of your lug nuts on backwards. The conical end of the lug nut seats into the wheel.

Hey Man, I'm pretty sure those U-bolts are suppose to wrap around the axle. It looks to me like the U-bolts wrapped around the leaf spring my be part of what caused the problem in the first place. Just FYI, Love your vids man!

It is that way on my old trailer also but it makes it really hard to find pieces that fit as they are designed to fit the other way. Can I attach from the bottom instead of the top?

My trailer had the springs mounted on the top as well but i have had no luck finding pieces to make it attach that way, can I attach the leaf under the axle on that type of trailer

Did your leaf spring eyelits have play side to side maybe 1/4” even when you tightened up on them?

I have a 18' Sea Ray (Just bought it used) all it needs is new springs. Great video...can I change them with the boat on the trailer....I have no way of taking it off. :-( Thank you

I reckon if you jack the whole trailer up and put it on blocks you could drop the axle and springs. Making a lot more work out of it. Find a lake with public day dock and leave the boat there, then take trailer home and change springs.

Great job! I got a question for you! If you move the springs to the front of the trailer will the ride be softer? If you move the springs to the rear of the trailer will the ride be softer?

It’ll mostly effect where the load is carried and tongue weight. You want a pretty consistent ratio, I think 60/40 or so, 60% of the trailer in front, 40% behind, the rear wheels. Move the axle back the the tongue weight increases, forward obviously decreases. If you have a trailer swaying a lot, like a short uhaul trailer for example, it’s likely incorrectly loaded and the tongue weight is way off. The difference in “ride” will be minimal or non existent, especially if it’s “better”

What size socket did you use to get the bolt off that holds the leaf spring onto the frame?

The reason the old spring broke was because the were installed wrong, and unfortunately you installed the new ones wrong also. The tie plate, (square plate with 5 holes. One hole for each end of the u-bolts & a hole in the center to go over the spring tie bolt), goes on top of those springs & the u-bolts wrap around the axle & up through the tie-plate. That way the tie plate holds it together while distributing the load weight across a larger area of the spring. The way you installed them puts all the load weight in a small area of the spring, very close to the spring tie boat. That causes a lot of stress on the springs and it is probably the reason the old spring failed. However, it's a fairly quick & easy job to go back & put the plate on top of springs & let the u-bolts wrap around the axle. In the long run you'll be glad you did.

So does it need another tie plate for the bottom . In other words one for the top and one for the bottom. Only way I would see for the nuts to be stopped on the bottom??????????
@oldtimer4567

@@arciefan tie plate goes on top of springs, axle goes under the springs, then the u-bolts go around the axle, from the bottom, one on each side of the spring, & up through the tie plates, & the nuts will then be on top.

@@oldtimer4567 True unless you have the springs below the axle , like my boat trailer and some do depending on the ground clearance wanted, but you are absolutely correct what you said.

Got your u bolts on wrong, plate should be on top of springs not on axle, that's why your springs are bent and broken.

Dude the only thing holding the axle on is the torque of the u bolt nuts. The plate has a hole to go on the spring and then the u bolts go around the axle😂
