My very good friend had these on offer at a birthday party a couple of years ago. I live in a pretty diverse area, so these are easy to find whether in Asian markets, specialty markets, or even in some of our big box grocery stores. He called them Dragon's eyes, and true to that name, if you just split them straight through with the pit, they do in fact kind of look like what you imagine a dragon's eye to look like. I just finished introducing these to my parents who enjoyed them. Such is the beauty of food to be able to share your experiences with others, and have them pass that experience on to others.

I was eating one of these as I watched this video, and it wasn’t really all that yummy. It’s alright, like a large, dry, flavorless grape with crunchy bits of tough fibery shell. Not worth the money. To each their own. I love mangoes as well, one of my favorite fruits, but I also really like these. You may have had a bad batch or unripe batch or something, because rambutan when ripe are definitely sweet, juicy, and have flavor, but the bits of shell can be annoying at times.

Where i live (southeast asia) we just dig our nails through the skin and peel it like that, less effort and no tools needed
@inthekitchenwithmatt
3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is a common method, some other people bite into it. The ones we get that are imported sometimes are much harder to dig into. The knife works every time without much effort. Especially with people with arthritis in their hands, much harder for them to pinch and break it open. I talk about that in my more in depth article I wrote about it on my website.

I saw them at Trader's Joe but was unsure how to eat one. Thanks for the explanation.

You are welcome! I didn't show the common way of just breaking them open with your hands, because sometimes they are a little hard, but most people in the Southeastern Asian countries open them that way.

Does it taste similar to a longan. I don't really like the taste of longans so I'm just wondering if it's worth trying.

They are in the same family of fruits, but this tastes better than Longan. Longan has a bit of a funky taste haha.

Awesome! Good luck! Your best best is an International supermarket, but not sure if they have those in Eastern Idaho, there is probably one in Boise, but that is far. Sometimes Costco gets them in stock, Sprouts, Whole Foods, etc.
