From what I was taught, an EMP is basically like the rain falling and it hits everywhere and it affects everything, so connecting something to your circuit will not help. Yes, that will protect you from a surge coming through the wiring from the grid, but when the surge hits all the wiring simultaneously there is no protection other than a faraday cage. During the Carrington event even electrical circuits that were hooked up to nothing we're generating electricity and shocking people, some were even getting hot enough to catch fire, so even if your house was disconnected completely from the grid and the circuit breaker was shut off and every breaker in the box was turned off, or even removed all together, the wires in the walls could still energize and get hot, even generate electricity if the EMP is strong enough, and your house could still catch fire and burn down because of it. All these gadgets that connect in line are not EMP protectors they are simply surge protectors.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I can only guess that the purpose is to keep all that energy from actually grounding/moving through the circuit. Kind of like the difference between you holding a live wire while wearing insulated shoes and holding one while barefoot standing on a wet metal floor. Hence why they would be putting them in vehicles also. That said, I would think that if the power was high enough you would just be wearing melted shoes in the former. As Jeff Goldblum would say, "Current will eh find a way." I'm not an electrician though.

@@dodge1629 The surprising thing is that your smartphone will likely survive. You see, nuclear EMP, unlike an "EMP gun", mostly affects large antenna-like structures like power grids. The reason for that is the Lenz's law and the fact that electromagnetic flux through a contour is proportional to the area that the contour encircles. Nuclear covers larger areas than a microwave EMP, albeit with lower strength. Hence, unlike huge power grid, the antenna in your smartphone is rather tiny and the effect of a large-scale nuclear EMP will mostly affect things that are plugged in.

I am a retired electrical engineer and have done a fair amount of voltage surge testing as well as the design of protection circuitry. Knowing the multiple EMP voltage surge characteristics, I was curious about how the EMP Shield product actually performed, along with how it was designed and installed. On the EMP Shield website, they actually list their test data, so I read through it to get an idea of how well the protection device performed. In conclusion, I didn't find a whole lot of useful data. Their test descriptions were not terribly clear and really didn't answer a basic common sense question, which is: How much voltage spike will get past the protection device? Normally, your tests would show the voltage spike levels that reach different outlets around your house, with and without the protection device connected; a basic before and after test. The only thing the EMP Shield tests revealed, was the protection device was not destroyed by the EMP testing. Also, due to the high speed nature of a nuclear EMP P1 pulse, the wire lengths between the protection device within the protection module, power line, and ground, would need to be less than a tenth of an inch to have a chance of offering some protection. The EMP Shield device should offer some protection to the EMP P2 pulse, which is similar to a lightning strike. I don't see it offering any protection to the P3 pulse, due to the longevity of it, it would probably cook the device. Keep in mind, all these statements I made were best guess, based upon available technology. I don't know what circuitry is being used in EMP Shield's protection device (s), I assume it is similar to what the other line voltage surge devices use, based on size of the product and cost.

In other words this device is for protecting electronic and electrical devices connected to the power grid from power surges travelling down power cables. There's just one teensie problem with that if you're trying to protect your stuff NOT from lightning strikes or power surges in the grid but EM pulses. EM pulses don't just travel down power cables. An EM pulse from a nuclear blast 200 miles above Kansas will travel through the atmosphere FIRST before it ever reaches any power lines or cables. As such it will fry electronic equipment even if that equipment is completely disconnected. AFAIK the only way to COMPLETELY protect equipment from the menace of EM pulses is with Faraday cages. At best that $299 do-hickey is only a PARTIAL protection. What does all that mean? It means this device is may be useful for protecting against lightning strikes but it's a waste of $299 if your aim is to protect your stuff against EM pulses. Why? Because even if you have this device and connected up while it may protect you from an EM pulse-induced surge along the power cables connecting your stuff to the grid it will NOT protect it from the EM pulse itself. That travels through the air and does NOT need power cables and power lines to induce a surge inside your electronic equipment itself. In particular any CPUs unprotected by a Faraday cage will be fried. I would also point out that anti-surge protectors already exist. They're called circuit breakers and most modern powerboards have them, albeit they don't generally cost $299 apiece. If Atlas truly wants to protect its clientele against EM pulses I suggest it incorporate Faraday cages and surge protectors into its shelters such that the cage surrounds the entire shelter. Now that would be a useful addition.

I've been designing surge and EMP circuits for over thirty years. The greatest difference between a typical lightning surge protector and an EMP/HEMP is response speed (nano-seconds/pico-seconds) and maximum clamping Voltage. The surge current is then usually associated with the application with a range of a few hundred Amps to several hundred kilo-Amps. The vehicle protection unit is way overpriced and judging from the long wimpy wire (inductive) leads, probably ineffective. You could connect a high current TVS transient diode (

Old guy here these used to be the EMP rules, but..: Good old 12 volts. Lock your unused/emergency electronics in a metal box or safe along with other important life saving stuff. 12 volt ham radio with both dc inputs shorted together with the transmitter output test load resistor on output. Old transistor/tube radio with battery removed, short unconnected battery voltage "input" terminals if you can. Your old ham radio may be your only good 2 way communication device for a few weeks. Your old transistor/tube radio the battery will corrode it left in the radio. The reason for shorting inputs is to hold the all power at zero volts, since both ground and plus voltage go tend to all chips, tubes, caps, and coils. The emp spike will try to raise the voltage on coils and wires to a level that will destroy the connected electronics.

Sorry, but a whole house protector is very unlikely to protect a home from a EMP. 95% of all homes use Romex (unshield wiring) when an EMP event occurs all the wiring in the house will pick up energy and transfer it to any devices that are plugged in. The whole house protector is too far away to prevent the devices connected in. If you want to protect your devices at home your need a protected at the point of Load (POL). Even if your home uses shielded wiring (MC OR AC) it might not provide sufficient shielding. The only good use for a Whole House Protector (WHP) is to clamp surges that originate from the Grid service. Realistically a WHP should be connected before it reached your electrical panel so it can clamp the surge before it reached your panel. WHP should be connected between your meter & the panel, not in the panel. FYI: A good commercial protector (ie used to protect telecom from localized lightning strikes which causes a localized EMP) usually cost between $1K and 3K USD (Transtector, Thor Systems sell commerical grade units). My guess is that this device uses a set of MOVs if its selling for $299. A commercial unit will use Silicon Avalanche Diodes which can take a lot of surges with out degradation. Most POL surge protectors use cheap MOV (Metal Oxide Varistors). MOVs can only handle a few surges before they are degraded or destroyed. The only reasonable cost non MOV POL surge protector is www.brickwall.com/ These are an LC (Inductor-Capacitor) filter Surge protector which filters out the surge instead of trying to absorb the energy. That said the cannot protect devices that have multipath surges, such as a TV connected via coax, or Computer via ethernet cable, or FAX\model connected to a phone\DSL cable. The EMP will introduce energy via the coax or data cable and provide a current loop path that the POL surge protector cannot block. Also devices that have an alternate ground (ie your refrig that connected to a cold water supply for making ice. For CME, its extremely unlikely that a low cost whole house protector would work, since its a long duration event & would produce a long surge or very frequent series of surges that will burn out the Whole house protector. if a CME occurs you have time to simple throw all the breakers and unplug every device. Usually it takes about 3 days for a CME to reach Earth. If you have ample warning, best to disconnect everything, and short the disconnected plugs of any devices to prevent a voltage differential in the devices wiring. Be sure to disconnect any data coax connections too.

EMPs aren't actually that big of a deal. If you've a carbeurated vehicle you're 100% fine, fuel injected cars with internal computers might be an issue but even that's unlikely. Be careful that you understand the difference between an EMP shield and a surge suppressor. That device you showed is a surge suppressor. And they are good to have, if they have enough capacity, usually measured in joules. Your shelter itself would provide some EMP protection but a real EMP shield would be a specially made cage that blocks electromagnetic radiation that would radiate out in all directions from the detonation device. In your shelter you’re already inside a metal cage so that affords you some protection. Lightning strikes can reach greater than 100,000 volts so you need a pretty hefty surge suppressor to be completely safe. For your home electronics I would use a Thurmond.

In my opinion these devices are a glorified surge protector not an emp protector, 90kv protection is trivial compared to the induced voltages an emp can generate. The transient that emp creates propagates through any non conductive material until it passes though any conductors potentially generating hundreds to many thousand volts and large currents that will jump across to other conductive wires, circuits etc in its path towards a ground or discharge path. Unlike a surge that follows a path the emp is everywhere at the same time. The plastic case that device is housed in is a good insulator for your normal house hold wiring to prevent shorts but a emp will pass through it as if it wasn't there. That's why a proper faraday shield is a better solution. A proper faraday shield is completely enclosed with no gaps or openings and proper thickness. My experience with lightning strikes and their effect on circuitry is that a direct strike is terminal if not fully shielded against, and if the initial surge doesn't toast your gear the induced secondary surges will finish the job. This is very similar to the emp effect. So basically if you have working power or electrical equipment its virtually impossible to fully protect it since it isn't sealed. So keep some emergency gear sealed away as a backup since any gear that's in use during a emp event most likely will be damaged. This is just my opinion, take it for what its worth, agree or disagree, your choice.

Pay close attention to what he said... It takes the pulse 1 surge to ground in half a nanosecond. Pulse 1(out of 3 pulses) is an electronics killing pulse. Power lines in an emp act just like the coils in a generator when an emp hits them within earth's magnetic field. So it creates an electric surge. Circuits in electronics act as pulse 1 receivers in the same way as power lines mentioned above. But they can't handle the amount of charge and burn/short out. This device basically helps isolate power supply lines you have running into and out of a Faraday cage. Example : ICF house poured with conductive concrete. Or a sealed steel structure.

Although experts have not achieved consensus on expected impacts, generally they believe that the most severe consequence of the pulse would not travel beyond about 2 miles (3.2 km) to 5 miles (8 km) from a ground level 10 KT IND detonation. The EMP sees all the conductors as either an inductor or capacitor so the way the pulse conducts is extremely unexpected from a typicalnhigh scool physics education. For example the energy would rather spark across the transformer than conduct through it. The little electromagnet in the breaker will defeat the intended use of the device, as will the long pigtails. The guts of one of these are several avalanche diodes, some MOV absorbers, and a gas duscharge tube shunt. ❤

I have to agree with you.. A surge of energy through wires is very easy to control; but when you are talking about frequencies outside the containment of wires, then you have to shield from the outside.. i.e. a faraday cage. Now having said that, the pulse will come through the grid because the "grid" is nothing more than a big antenna receiving the energy from the pulse. Now maybe this device may stop the energy from continuing but that's it. Anything out side of containment will be toast...

put it simply, it is like a surge protector for your entire house. the only way to still have power after an emp fried the grid is to have a hole house generator hooked up to LP. gas pipes still need electricity to push the gas. everyone else will have fried wires in their homes and need to rewire the entire house to get power once the grid is back up.

Small engines with electronic ignitions would be fried in an emp . I haven't seen an engine with points and condenser since the seventies . They aren't expensive so you could keep a spare in a faraday and replace it as needed . Some special tools required

Ron, if the "shield" is simply an ultra-fast surge protector, that's one good step. But it is NOT the same as EMP shielding the entire room. That device may stop a power surge from coming down your antenna wire or power cable, but the problem is that the direct EMP pulse will enter any premise that is not completely surrounded in sealed metal. There are some interesting white papers on the web that discuss how you need to how metal contacts overlapping and shielding entryways. How any vents or ducting has to be plugged and sealed, How an awful lot of extensive work has to be done--not just putting surge protectors on the wires. If you don't protect the entire body of your generator, you will find it has been burned out--whether the wiring was surge protected or not. Using this box is only one step, one small step. If your gas-tight doors have thick rubber gaskets, guess what? They will still pass EMP! Solid EMP protection is a laborious and expensive process, you can't just buy a box--unless you are planning to move into it, and it is fully sealed, metal on metal.

Wrong The Clip Of The Emp Connected To The Breaker Box You Showed Its Connected Wrong. You Can Not Use Two Separate Mini 20s It Has To Be A Dual Pole 20 To Connect To Both Phases Call EMP And Ask Them. See The Top Breaker You Have On Left and Right Top Of Box Needs To Be Just Like That But A 20 And It Needs To Be A 20 Only Not 30 40 50 But A 20 Dual Pole Breaker.

A #10 can or any other metal container will NOT protect against an EMP unless there is a sufficient insulator between the contents and the metal. It would make a handy container for recycling however of fried components. People are relatively safe from lightening strikes in vehicles because they are separated from the metal body by the plastic/fabric/foam interior.
@mazecentric4124

Nope. Rubber can insulate. Tires are not made from rubber alone. Also depends on dirt/moisture which it'll have. KZitem has vids if you search "Car struck by lightening". :)

I like the EMP shield. I did not expect a price of over 300 dollars :o You did your best and i want to thank you for your efford to protect us. I can't efford the EMP shield. Also i like to explain to people if you have a classic car to protect your ignition system. I made a shield of some roofing led to isolate my electronnics from a EMP. And if you see war coming just unplug the batteries and put some extra protection on the car bonnet like sandbags or something like that. Also in paniek people wil take your car if they know your car stil works. And be carefull and do not tell the world about you being a prepper and you got a bunker or a safe place or a car that always wil work even after a EMP or that you have food for 2 years. The known preppers are the first targets when the sssshhhhh...... hits the fan. Knowledge is the most important thing to prep. for. Greetings,, Kitty.

One more question and observation, what good does it do to have emp protection of your vehicle if no electric grid is up and running no electric no fuel, and the reason old vehicles they could use another type of fuel like wood burning gases released from wood or other burnable materials even moon shine liqueur, and did you know a vehicles run without a battery once it starts running so protect the battery itself so you have electric starts.

An old diesel or carb'd gasoline car has no engine electronics (or very very little) so once spun up, they run fine. More modern cars all have complicated electronic engine systems that require power to operate. Once started, and the alternator is energized, it makes it's own power. But if the ECU, ignition coils, injectors, etc. are fried from a pulse, the thing is dead. That snake oil lightning suppressor will do absolutely nothing to protect the miles of wiring inducing currents all over the place. (the same is true to a lesser extent inside your house. the electronics inside your laptop and cellphone are not going to like have power induced all over the place. the "wireless charging" BS in the phone will be the first thing to explode. let's see this thing protect those.) The bunker itself is already all the EMP shielding you need. Disconnected from the outside grid, there's no way for a surge (from anything) getting in. If your generator is underground with you, it's very well protected as well. No, it's not a perfect cage: the door seals are not metallic (think oven door), the air ducts are mostly open, and the escape hatch has a plastic lid. The amount of RF/EM that can get in is very minimal. (try using a radio or cellphone inside one.) Of course, people have them tied to the grid, solar, cable TV, (non-fiber) internet, security cameras, radio antennas, etc., etc.

Lol an EMP moves high current electrons thru all susceptible wires and smds, ic etc., by way of induced excitation. So, you need a faraday cage with suppression diodes and fully shielded wires/cables. Just take it to a hearth chamber lab and see if it can pass EMI test lol.

Ron, this is great foresight on your part. I think the only thing to improve would be to add a Far UCV light in the mudrooms. True Far UCV that does not harm human skin and eyes don't exist yet. The current UVC lights should be run when no one is in the room for safety. In the very near future, Far UVC lights will hit the market. The current UVC lights will give you a sunburn if you're in the room and arc flash if you look directly at them. In the event of a airborne pathogen without a cure, I would gladly get a sunburn before entering the shelter. What are your thoughts?

except Texas who have there own power grid and emp shielding, I have made a big Faraday cage 10x10 feet and have everything I need in there. old diesel cars will still work so get one as they dont need anything other than a battery which will not loose a charge in an emp also its not just nukes that make emps the sun is well over due for a massive solar flair (mass coronal ejection)

PLEASE ......... check out --- SEARCH --- water power (hydro power), WIND power, STEAM power ( I have made a few VERY EASY, workable, easy-to-use, steam powered contraptions in my day --- they DO use about anything that will burn, whether wood, coal, oil, trash, etc., as long as it will burn ) --- SEARCH the term/phrase "HOW TO PRODUCE POWER" --- Check out "how to make and use gasifiers" --- gasifiers CAN be used to power autos, boats, lighting systems, electric generators, and ??? --- and are TESTED AND USED old timey tech systems --- ALMOST ANY working electric motor ( a ceiling fan, washing machine, a vehicles starter motor, windshield wiper motor, etc. --- most battery powered motors ) CAN BE used to produce electricity --- by cranking by hand, peddling from a bicycle, hydro power, steam power, wind power, hot air power, gasifiers, etc. --- all are useful methods AND are covered in MANY videos on KZitem and other online sources -- As I simply LOVE to tinker with things, I have successfully experimented with most all of these things -- and I will continue my experiments with others ------- MAKE CERTAIN TO PRINT OUT YOUR INFORMATION AS A BACK-UP -- YOU MIGHT HAVE TO BUILD AN ELECTRICAL SOURCE UNTIL YOU CAN MAKE USE OF ANY TYPE OF DIGITAL INFORMATION FROM A CELL PHONE, TABLET OR LAPTOP USB MEMORY --------- ANY OF THE TECHNIQUES THAT I HAVE MENTIONED WILL AT LEAST POWER LIGHTS, CELL PHONES, COMPUTERS, COOK, PROVIDE HEAT ( EITHER BY LIMITED ELECTRIC HEAT OR BY STARTING A FIRE ), RECHARGE MOST DEVICES --------- THESE TECHNIQUES, ALONG WITH AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF GOOD, OLD-FASHIONED, HUMAN BRAIN POWER WILL GET YOU THROUGH MONTHS/YEARS WITHOUT POWER UNTIL "NORMAL" POWER IS RESTORED ------- BUT --- HOW ABOUT BECOMING A "SCIENTIST" FOR A TAD OF TIME AND EXPERIMENT WITH CREATING SOME JUICE --- ELECTRICAL JUICE --- ON A SMALL SCALE BEFORE ---BEFORE --- THE LIGHTS GO OUT --- JUST SO THAT YOU CAN SAFELY SHAKE HANDS WITH MR. & MRS. ELECTRON WITHOUT IT BEING A SHOCKING EXPERIENCE !!! ANY OF YOU can become "GOOD ENOUGH" at SOME of the above ways in which to make your own electrical power --- SEARCH for videos and/or books about basic electrical wiring, basic electrical testing, learn about basic electrical safety most of all --- we were all taught about the basics during our school days in my time ( I was born in the 1940's ) --- MOST of the BASIC books and videos ARE VERY EASY on your brain cells --- YOU ARE MORE THAN SMART enough to do this --- I promise smoke WILL NOT billow out from of your ears from learning TOO much --- at most, you might looooose a few hairs from your head due to a tad of head scratching --- you will have some fun --- but most of all --- you will feel and be safer for KNOWING this information.
