Just introduce a hostile self insert DMPC with an invincible stat block and TPK them. Works like a charm.

Committing to 4 sessions usually isn't so tough. Sets of 12 to 24 sessions may also be fairly easy to commit to. Probably best to avoid locking in players for games expected to last a year or more. Using Campaign Arcs, and similar concepts, can be handy. Allegedly, the average duration of a game is in the 3-6 months range, and most DnD kind of gets wacky after level 13. So, build those arcs to fit that time, kind of like chapters. Also give the PCs time to explore their Character arcs. There's no rule that says one must play the same character for an entire campaign, there's also no rule saying there can't be time skips and level jumps. I was in a 1-20 DnD group, lasted about 30 months for about 105 sessions. One of the players would make every 3rd or 4th game, and their contribution was negligible. Some sessions were cancelled as a result of them not showing (2 down=cancel). Don't keep the ones who have other more important things to do during that scheduled game time, cut them free and find a replacement. Frequently cancelled sessions certainly contribute to killing groups/games.

I do agree that finding consistent players is super important especially a 1-20 DnD Group. (Btw that is rare to hear of 1-20 dnd groups so that's cool as heck).
