I’ll also second that opinion. I’ve been performing/singing professionally for 30 years and recently lost my mixed range when I wasn’t gigging as much during Covid. These exercises have helped a great deal. Although I will say when I don’t have the proper monitor set up and I’m struggling to hear my voice, I lose any upper range in a matter of three or four songs and it’s awful. Another thing that seems to happen, and maybe it’s because I like a loud monitor, my ears start to plug up and I have to keep popping them in order to hear my monitor, but again this is probably from years of the bad habit of a loud monitors 😩😖😆

I liked this simple explanation on breaks. Having sung professionally as an operatic singer (oratorio too), and taught hundreds of students over 48 years of teaching, one of my 16 year old baritones has a huge break in his voice. I've tried most of these exercises - vocal fry - siren - etc. It's getting better but I'm sending his this short video clip to see if he understands how to blend a bit better. He's extremely talented so I want to help him overcome this. Thank you for sharing.

@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing. If your voice is up and down, I would go the doctor (and perhaps an ENT) to get your voice checked. Sometimes allergies or acid reflux can debilitate a voice without the singer realizing it. Of course, the caveat is I'm not a medical professional so go with what your doctor suggests. It's also possible that your technique is inconsistent so some of your habits are wearing your voice out. Seek out a trained, experienced voice teacher to give you tailored instruction for your specific needs. If you don't have one already, you can book a trial Skype lesson with my studio here: spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson

Could you please do a video on how to get a balanced mixed voice? Or if it’s possible.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion. I will seriously consider this topic. It is possible to sing with a balanced mixed voice, but it is something that is easier to teach one-on-one than in a video since everyone is different. Learning to be balanced means the student is starting off somehow "unbalanced"...but in which way? Every singer is different in their habits so there isn't one adjustment that every singer must make. It is really a case of "it depends."
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
5 жыл бұрын

I have been singing for 2 years now and my voice wasn't always well connected that's why from time to time, I tend to have a chestier mixed voice. Now I'm fully aware of my not-so-connected-voice and recently, I'm working to smooth out the break. But I found out that these kinds of exercises don't really work for me. What worked the best for me is the Lip Rolls. Now I'm getting better than ever and I'm able to sing better in my mix without going chestier. My question: Will it produce similar results to these exercises?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Different people with differing voice tendencies and habits respond differently to the different exercises. That's why it's so difficult to answer your question. When people need to get to New York, one drives, one takes the train, and one flies...but hopefully, they all make it there! The "creaky door" exercise is designed to increase vocal cord closure (adduction) while thinning out the extra weight (singing too chesty.) A lip roll can thin out also extra weighty while DECREASING adduction (the opposite of the creaky door.) So two seemingly opposite exercises might help two people with opposite habits and tendencies to reach the same goal. Whether that's what is happening in this situation is impossible to tell without hearing you sing and working with you in a lesson. But keep going with what works for you if you notice good results. There is no ONE exercise that helps everyone. In fact, what is good for one person could hinder another. If the lip trill and related exercises work for you, you might want to try out my video "7-Minute Mix Voice Workout" here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qn2luKmbfah6qXY

Yeah, it's meant to be an overview to show the necessary steps. Every singer is different with dozens (maybe hundreds) of possible issues they could come up against along the way. This video would have to be hours in length to cover all these possibilities. Instead, I'm happy to help a singer with personalized feedback and solutions to their unique challenges in my program Singing Ignition or in private lessons. I also have more videos and shorts on this channel that cover other possible techniques to try when erasing the break.

@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
4 жыл бұрын
I'd have to hear you to know for sure, but it's common to fall into a distortion-like sound called "creaky voice" when humming through the break region. It sounds like vocal fry but pitched up higher. Try pulling in your navel to give a bit more air pressure to the vocal folds when you get to this point of the scale. That can keep them vibrating in a more clear mode. Good luck!

Hi Spencer, I just discovered your videos and love them! I feel like I'm squeezing my vocal chords together when I do Squeaky Door, which reminds me of what vocal fry feels like...I'm wondering if there's a risk of damaging my chords or developing nodes with this warm up if I do it wrong? Thanks so much for these videos!
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda, the "creaky door" does bring the vocal folds together to produce an edgier sound than normal speaking or singing. Often, this creaky voice can sound similar to vocal fry, but in a higher register than fry. As you do this exercise, be sure to watch for the red flags of irritation: feeling the need to clear your throat or swallow repeatedly, experiencing itchiness or discomfort in the larynx. These could be early warnings that you are overdoing the coordination, and you are irritating your vocal folds. In that case, stop, rest, and reassess what you are doing. With the "creaky door" exercise, a little goes a long way. Do the bare minimum necessary to produce the sound and find the connection between your chest and head voice. And when in doubt, throw it out.

Good for you, although knowing the male voice, you are probably singing in a chesty mix voice if you can sing connected up to B4. You would be screaming (and/or completely flat) if you tried to sing B4 in full chest voice. It's wonderful though that you have this range.

Not all the exercises work similarly for everyone, which is why working with a vocal coach is important. They can give you feedback and offer alternate solutions when a technique or tool isn't working.

@Spencer Welch Vocal Studio, Really great way to explain that to us but how can we implement these to songs? Do you have any video for that.

It really helps me a lot. I can do the connection using those chest,mixed, and falsetto but the facts is when i started singing its hard to merge the mixed voice. Then my chest voice is cracking what advice you can give me sir?

Unfortunately, Wendel, it's almost impossible to know exactly why this is happening in your voice without hearing you and working with your voice. Everyone is different, which is why some singers respond to certain exercises, while other voices don't. However, it is fairly normal that singers that are new to mixed voice, often can't sing a song with mixed voice as easily as in an exercise. First, you have to practice finding and polishing your mixed voice on different vowels, consonants, and melodic shapes. I suggest you try some of the exercises in this video to get more at home in your mixed voice: 7 Minute Mix Voice Workout kzitem.info/news/bejne/qn2luKmbfah6qXY

Once you find an exercise that works really well, try removing the lyrics from the song you're practicing, and sing the melody with NAY or GEE or MUM...whichever Home Base Exercise that worked best for you during the workout.

Because I have a busy schedule, I'm not able to listen to subscriber's songs and give them feedback unless it's during a lesson they have booked with me. If you want to book a lesson, you can find my scheduler here: spencerwelch.com/book-now

I definitely notice those breaks you describe in doing these exercises, does it get better with more intentional practice of simply trying to smooth out the connection? I do sometimes get it to work when going from low to high but high to low is much harder to be smooth.

Great question! That depends on a lot of factors, including IF you're practicing the right exercises for your needs and, when you find the right ones, IF you're practicing those exercises correctly. Different singers break for different reasons, so that's where working with an experienced teacher comes into play.

Can anyone tell me who already get the result. How long have u been practice until your voice stop cracking. I'm practicing everyday but still not overcome it yet. Thanks before.

This is like asking, "how long do you have to work out to get fit?" It depends. Everyone is different. Some will find connection instantly through this video. Some will have moderate success which they can build on day after day. And others will need to work on their connection for months or years. There is no "one size fits all". If you are practicing every day but you aren't seeing any results, there may be other factors like your age or your vocal health to consider. But ultimately, I suggest you work with a vocal coach. You could spend another 100 hours singing along to KZitem videos, but if you aren't getting anywhere on your own, it would be a waste of time. Why not invest in yourself and book 30 minutes with an experienced vocal coach so that they can assess your difficulties, explain what and how you should be practicing, and then give you feedback about where you are going wrong. If you don't have a vocal coach already, you can book a 20-min trial lesson at my studio here: www.spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson You also can get personalized workout programs for your voice from me through my program SINGING IGNITION. I assess your voice - your strengths and challenges - and then pick a series of vocal workouts for you: www.singingignition.com

Hi, since everyone is different, and I don't know your voice, I can only make general suggestions. Try practicing along with the many vocal workout videos that are offered for free on my channel. That might start opening and developing your higher range again. Then when you're ready for personal guidance, you can book a lesson with me here: www.spencerwelch.com/lessons/book-now/ Or you can book a 20-min trial lesson with my associate here: www.spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson

Hey Spencer, Great Vocal Tips !!! I've been toying around with a "singing straw". Actually, this has helped increase range; not sure of the physical science...? Are you familiar with them??

Yes, straw phonation can be helpful for warming up and rehabilitating the voice
