A rip current is a powerful, channeled current that is common along the East, Gulf and West coasts of the U.S., according to Weather.gov. They can even occur in the Great Lakes!
Rip currents can be so strong that swimming straight back to the shore isn't possible. Stay calm and swim parallel to the shore if you get stuck in one.
