During field surveys of rock slopes and walls, it is important to obtain the characteristics of rock joints because they affect the stability of rock mass. Rock joints are typically presented as sets of discontinuities (on average, three sets of discontinuities will be common in most rock walls). Watch this video that shows how to identify sets of discontinuities in the vertical rock wall in the field • Video . There are simple correlations that can be used to estimate RQD using the data on joint spacing and joint counts. This video gives three examples on how to do so.
