I think the video does a great job of explaining (visually) how battles work in a competition. Maybe if there are a few more examples (when you present the video) with different B-Boys/B-girls and different moves it could really get the point across to non B-Boys/B-Girls. But other than that it's hella dope!

I really liked that video! I can't say if it helps people not involved in the dance for sure, but I'm going to show it to friends and see their reaction. Also, this topic is very interesting to me and I can definitely see how one person's perspective can differ wildly from another and as an end result some bboys 'get robbed'. I think we all have to keep in mind that each judge has their own preference and at the end of the day they were picked to show their personal opinion. This is not chess, where there are clearly defined rules and points, this is all subjective...

Awesome new vid!! Yes definitely with better understanding of the culture, it would lead to better appreciation for it. Btw instead of the judge keeping their thoughts to their own after the battle mysteriously, I would think that if short comments were made on the battle as to why the person won would perhaps help in understanding as to what criteria that he/she particularly excelled in.

The only thing I have trouble explaining to outsiders is why bboys never show up at concerts or other party-like events. I saw Marlee Marl and Grandmaster Flash in less than a 1-year span and everyone was dancing...except bboys. Marlee had no cypher and GF had a total of 3 bboys in one circle out of 2 sets on different days (including me). And the Grandmaster Flash shows were fucking free. When did we become a gym and competition culture rather than one about having fun? Lame shit, man.

but as an art form, it's true that there isn't and should not be one standardized form of judging. I just tell people that it's very difficult and complicated to judge a battle, because you have to understand the whole scene, history, and culture, in order to understand it. just like fine arts. why is some stuff in museums while other stuff is in the trash? there is no easy way to answer such questions using just a sentence or two, so that's exactly what I say to those non-bboys that be asking. let them know there is a whole world of cultural contents to explore, and it's not just about doing flips, six-steps, or handstands.

people should not be able to know so easily all of the how and why. if it was easy for everyone to know, it wouldn't have any value. the whole thing about judging is that not everyone can do it. it raises the value of the judge when others do not have the necessary information to do it, and it raises the value of the dance when people know that it was evaluated with decades of experience and not just using a method that any person can utilize. in all of the talk about breaking as a sport, many people forget that breaking is an element of the hiphop culture, so the dancers that are the best representatives of this culture should be the ones winning (as opposed to the dancers that are the best gymnasts winning). How can one be a representative of hiphop? first you gotta know hiphop and do hiphop yo. the general public that has no idea of course cannot and also should not be so easily able to discuss the winners and losers of breaking battles. make some curiosity. tell the people that if they really wan to understand, they should get into the scene, start attending hiphop events, start breaking, and over time they will get it, too. this kind of answer has the potential to pull new members into our society
