Just a 'current' observation. Now that Photoshop Beta has Generative Fill, one can resize the canvas then using any preferred selection tool, select the blank (now black) areas plus some of the edges of the photo, then hit Generate. That will do a beautiful job of extending the photo to fit the enlarged canvas. I think the results are probably similar ...its just neat to use the new process.

yes the new generative fill will do a much better job of extending backgrounds than this method especially on busy backgrounds, I encourage everyone to give it a try, the only downside (for the time being) is the low resolution

Very important, make sure "maintain aspect ratio" is NOT selected or it won't work. It's the little link in between the Width and Height at the top next to the protect drop down. This was very frustrating

Hi, It is because your photo is background layer. First convert it into normal layer and then start cropping the canvas size.(i.e. remove the lock symbol on your image layer).

Your result is good with the tool at hand. But the tool could be better. I miss a bokeh slider that transform the continuous blurring - which imo doesn't look realistic - with out-of-focus-circles (the small "bobbles" around highlights) that should be variable in strength and also should vary in size and number according to the depth map.
