Typically shirring is done using elastic thread but I didn't have any on hand, so here's a quick tutorial on how to create faux shirring using 1/4 inch elastic!
It'll last longer too, and if the elastic goes you can replace it more easily

I love this! I thrifted a BIG roll of 1/4" elastic and I keep trying to find ways to use it up lol! This summer my mom and I have had 3 new things with normal shirring start to unravel, and so far this faux method has served me well!

This is the only way we ever shirred anything when I was learning. It was in the pattern. I want to try with elastic in the bobbin.

Quick recommendation, try a tighter tension on the shuttle cock as on some machines the regular tension does not allow the elastic thread to stretch as needed. Also you need to hand wind the elastic thread onto the bobbin.

Yeah I bought that controversial Lolita pattern from simplicity and I was so confused why they had elastic guides when in the pictures it was obviously shirred…it was faux shirring 💀 I was like “hmmm this is a controversial pattern but at least the back is fully shirred” NOPE.

This is my preferred method for shirring😊 Anytime I use the tiny elastic thread it fails.

I swear I have that same pattern in a sheet set 😍from the 90s😂 Edit: this seems more difficult to me than regular shirring. The first time I tried it, it wasn't perfect. But the second time I aced it! 😊

I would say that for me, “real” shirring is a lot easier and faster but this turned out super cute and is a good method! We need to come up with a different name for it!😂❤

Love this. I tried just adding 1 elastic pc to pull the extra back and it still kinda has a gap afterward. Gonna go redo it like this instead

What is the purpose? Does it make it tighter or is it for the look?

I'm not the creator, but yes it does help with the shaping of garments. It also makes the dress a slip on. No need for a zipper if you make the dress able to stretch enough. Stretchy fabrics can hug you in very unflattering ways, but are convenient because they technically fit everyone of a certain size. Sewing a dress out of non stretchy fabric can be very flattering to your individual body size/ shape. However, having small pieces of a stretchy piece sewn into a fitted dress can make it fit without a ton of darts and convenient enough that it won't take you forever to get the zipper or buttons done up. She did add length in the back to allow for stretching. Edit. After a few minutes I had another one of her videos pop up and she does in fact have a zipper on this particular dress. You may be able to get away without one on a differently designed dress though.

Is it faux shirring because you aren't using elastic thread and sewing it directly to the fabric?
@jhwatchlist6927

It's not "faux", it's shirring, which just means gathering of multiple rows of fabric.
