@BlackDemonicWolf That completely depends on the quality and quantity of grass in your field. If the field is small, your horse will eat it down and not have enough to eat. If the field is big but the grass is all dry or low in quality, your horse will also need some additional hay to make sure he's getting all his nutrients. Many owners get samples of their grass analyzed to know its nutrient contents. I would talk to your vet too to get his/her opinion of the field. -Ali

It depends on the horse, the hay and the grass. Each horse has different nutritional needs (like different people!) and different types of hay and grass supply different amounts of nutrients. It's best to talk to your vet about what would be best for your unique horse.

@LoisRags13 Yep. Many horses just get fed morning and evening, though. You should never feed just once a day, unless you horse is getting enough hay to eat all day! Horses need food to be continually moving through their systems, because they are natural grazers. -Ali

do you have to give your horse grain? or would they be ok with just hay and grass? by the way great videos keep it up im getting a horse probably this week so i'm doing alot of research
@aokamins11

@xElizabethloveablex Not all horses need grain. It's a matter of what else they are eating, how hard they are working, and how easy/hard it is for them to keep on weight. A Grand Prix jumping Thoroughbred would have to have grain, or he'd be skin a bones. A pony in a field getting ridden once a week should NOT have grain. If you feed grain, you should feed it at the same time every day, either once or twice a day. -Ali

@66eb ow! I'm sorry. Unfortunately horses aren't great at seeing what they are about to eat, and they can nip you if you are accidentally in the way. That's why it's so important to keep your fingers out of the way when you are feeding a horse by hand!!! -Ali

My daughter is getting a horse next February, and we're going to house him at my brother's plot. She will see him every day for two weeks, and then every second day for four weeks. Then she will only see him on Wednesdays, some Thursdays, Fridays, and then some Sundays. She is scared that the horse won't think that she is his owner, because my brother's wife has 5 horses, and is going to feed him more then Natasja (my daughter). What should we do?

@kittygirlz2 Too many treats can make a horse sick, but it does take a lot ;) Noah got into the barn once and ate an entire box of granola bars (over 30!!) and was fine. I wouldn't recommend that though--he was very lucky!! 1-4 granola bars a day would be just fine. A couple apples and a couple carrots a day are totally fine too. -Ali

That's an interesting question. The conventional wisdom is that it should be at least 50F, because it was thought that cold water could make horses ill. However, many range horses drink water in the winter that is barely above freezing, and there is little scientific evidence that cold water is bad for horses. However, if you have a skinny horse, try to get them warmer water in the winter as it will help them keep on weight. -Ali

@xElizabethloveablex The best would be to talk to your vet about what your horse needs, but if your horse is fit and you ride every day, than yes, grain would probably be a good thing. Most formula grains, unlike oats or sweet feeds, also provide lots of good extra minerals and vitamins. You'll have to figure how much your horse needs, however. And grain is NEVER a replacement for good quality hay--just a supplement. -Ali
@aokamins11

NO. Never feed a horse mowed grass. It can actually kill them, as the gasses from the composting grass can give them colic. Grass must be either alive (uncut) or properly dried out (like hay) for horses to safely eat. -Ali

yeahh its pretty bad ive seen horses having to go to surgery to have their guts emptied to get rid of the colic, its pretty grim and its also very bad because the horses can't sick it up because in their throat they only allow things to pass down one way (unlike humans, dogs, cats ect) so everything just stays in there until its sorted out and it would need immediate vet attention and they need to keep walking until the vet arrives :) hope this kinda helped i know i rant on a lot haha

Brand has nothing to do with it--it's only type and how much. The horse needs to be fed more hay (free choice--he should have hay to eat all the time) and probably fed beet pulp or rice bran in addition to a concentrated pellet feed. If you feed beet pulp, make sure to soak it in water for at least an hour first! -Ali
