Hi Leah! Thanks for the kind words :) I can't tell you how many failed hats I've had! I later realized some of the time, it really wasn't my fault but issues with the fiber. Each Suri alpaca I have has slightly different fleece and some felt much easier than others. It can get frustrating. I have found adding 10-30% merino or corriedale wool to alpaca fleece helps greatly. I also do test patches before felting larger projects to see how it felts. Soap matters, too. But I love that you can always fix with needle felting and locking that in place with hat stiffener :) Good luck and have fun!

I dream of having alpacas one day! *sigh* one day. I am still pretty uneducated about all the different fiber types, but it seems Suri is a lot softer? It looks softer than alpacas I have cuddled in NC. I love the idea of mixing it with some merino! that makes so much sense! I just loved your attitude through the whole video and I loved the hats. I decided to follow you on Facebook and here so keep coming with the videos! I will be sure to watch and learn!

Hi again :) Suri has a more slick feel and shine- a lot like silk. When woven into a scarf, it has a gorgeous drape. It is a bit tricky to felt but can definitely be done. I tested 10-50% corriedale mix and interestingly, 20-30% was the sweet spot. At 40-50%, it almost felt like the fibers started competing with each other and didn't felt as nicely. I am expecting 3 babies this month ~ early Dec. I will post pics on FB when they are born! Thanks again, Leah!!!

I would wear that hat if the fiber came from my alpaca, good job. I am so happy to see this video. I wanted a new hat but could not find fur felt. I also raise alpaca, so I wanted something that would be related to them. Now I can felt my hat from their fur. I cant' wait to get fitted and buy my mold etc. If anyone knows where to get good molds for good value, send me a msg. I tried to learn spinning without luck lol. I hope I can make use of my fiber with this skill. The manure is still awesome!

+geo mundi Thanks for your positive comment! I get the hat mold from Hatshapers.com. Blending a bit of wool (merino/corriedale) at 10-20% to your alpaca will make it easier to felt, generally speaking. But you can definitely felt 100% alpaca- both Huacaya or Suri. Be gentle and take your time felting since alpaca fiber tends to slip away especially in the earlier part of the felting process. Also use room temp water (vs warm/hot) until it is completely felted. One other helpful tip as some alpaca fleeces are harder to felt than others-felt a small square or a mini bag (to test seams) with the specific fleece you plan to make your hat with. That will save you a lot of trouble and frustration later :) Good luck!

Right now I just have 10, but I'm considering renting a stud, I just can't find a good one who is proven. Best wishes and thanks to you and your herd.

I've done dozens of hats, and with wool, which felts very well. But for whatever reason they aren't that stiff. I even added stiffener, but it just flakes off. I've never gotten the felting as dense as it appears in every other hat video, so I think you leaving out some crucial information that perhaps you take for granted that people know.
@WisteriaSuriRanch
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kita and Juno, what kind of hat stiffener did you use? There wasn't a whole lot of info on this and I did quite a bit of trial and error before being able to stiffen my hats. I had the best luck with confectioner's glaze (main ingredient is shellac) diluted with rubbing alcohol. The dilution was a bit of trial and error also but I diluted it enough so I can easily use a brush to put it on my hat. I had to wait until it was dry to see if it hardened it enough- and if it didn't, I put another coat of confectioner's glaze on. Repeated until I got it to the right stiffness. Confectioner's glaze won't flake off and I think using that may give you more success. I had a few I put too much on and it turned into a felt helmet... :) so maybe try on a little flat felt and see if it might work for you? I think a bottle of confectioner's glaze was less than $20 from a baking supply store- just make sure the ingredient is shellac. Good luck and let me know if you try! Keiko

@@WisteriaSuriRanch I used to work at a 19th century living history museum village, and we had a hatmaker and his shop, dated 1830. Back then they (and we) used shellac to stiffen the hats and it worked great. If you needed it stiffer, you just added another coat, or coats, and you could coat the inside too. The derby was given several coats as it was supposed to be almost like a helmet, because it was originally designed as a riding hat in England. The technique for making our hats were quite different than this video, but then we used commercially made hat blanks.

Thanks for your message :) It's Keiko from Wisteria. You can always add more shellac/confectioner's glaze which will smooth it out and make it less fuzzy- and/or use a razor to get rid of the fuzz. The longer fiber that's used (in the roving itself), the less fuzzy I think it will be...but might be a bit harder to felt. Hope this helps a bit. Have a fantastic day!

Thread- think it was one of the heavier ones I found at Walmart (stores limited out in the country...) same with the needle, nothing special- it does help if it is a tad bit longer. I ordered the confectioner's glaze from a kitchen/baking supply company online- just googled it. Yes, rubbing alcohol- think I've used both 70% and 90%...whatever I can get out here. Good luck!! What wool blend are you planning to use? That will make a difference in success rate- always do a test patch to be extra safe. Thanks for asking and feel free to contact me anytime!

Hello Kuratos! This is Keiko from Wisteria Suri Ranch. Thank you for your comment and question ;) If you don't like the wooly look, the shellac (stiffener- confectioner's glaze mixed with alcohol in this case) can be applied a few extra times and it will smooth it out and not have a fuzzy look or feel. The fiber will matter, too- Suri is easier to make it look slicker/smoother and less wooly. I have also seen people use a razor and sort of give it a little shave :) :) I haven't done that so please test on something other than a finished felted hat. Hope this helps a little. Hi Judy, Sorry I missed your comment! Thanks so much :) I have felted 100% Suri as well as blends. I've used a variation from 70-100% Suri/ merino or corriedale. I always test a small patch to see if it felts. Some Suri fleeces felt better than others. I have sent my raw fleeces with purchased merino to get it processed at the mill. But I also hand process some of my stuff- and card things together. I got the hat form from hatshapers.com :) Have a great day!

Thanks for this video. I noticed once the hat was finished it still looked furry. Is there a way to make it have a smoother finish?
@WisteriaSuriRanch
9 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddie, Thank you for your very nice comment. When I want to make some hats smoother and slicker looking, I brush on extra layers of the diluted confectioner's glaze/alcohol mix (also sold as shellac) on the outside. Sometimes I will brush on a layer and wait for it to dry before adding more layers so I don't over do it. It will harden and hold the shape of your hat better. It won't feel as nice to the touch, so you might want to experiment a bit with flat scrap felt. Also, sometimes the furry-ness result depends on the fiber you use (as in specific alpacas in our case). Some felt tighter and flatter while others have a bit more fuzz. I always felt a small piece from the roving/batt to see how well it felts before making a larger project. Hope this helps ;)

Hello :) You'll want to get some alpaca fiber in roving or batt form. If you can get some with 10-20% merino blended, that would be a little easier to felt. I don't have any listed right now on Etsy, but Etsy is a good place to find some alpaca fiber. Are you in the US? I should have some alpaca roving listed within a week or two at my Etsy shop- but I currently only ship within the US. Also check your local alpaca breeders by Google-ing :) If you are in the US, please feel free to message me on Etsy for a custom order/or listing and I will get something listed sooner for you. You'll want at least 4-6 ounces per hat. THanks for asking! Have a wonderful day! www.etsy.com/shop/WisteriaSuriRanch

@WisteriaSuriRanch
8 жыл бұрын
Hi Luisina, I translated your question and I am guessing you are referring to the hat stiffener liquid? I use confectioner's glaze bought at an online baking supplies store. Confectioner's glaze is the same as shellac which stiffens hats. I dilute confectioner's glaze with rubbing alcohol 70-90% (bought at Walmart) and apply it to the hat. I use maybe 10% confectioner's glaze to 90% rubbing alcohol and start there. You can apply multiple layers or if it isn't making the hat stiff enough, increase the ratio of the confectioner's glaze. I like that it is food grade and easy to use, but there are other ways to stiffen hats :) Thanks for asking! Have a great day.

@tiareraro
8 жыл бұрын
+Michelle Styles Hi Michelle, I usually make the basic resist pattern ( I have a quick youtube video on this) and sort of put it against the mold to gauge size and adjust... but you can use paper or fabric (and tape or sew both sides) and test it on your hat mold before you spend hours wet felting. The resist pattern I show on the separate video clip has been used on S, M cowboy hats as well as for bucket and bell cloche hat molds in S, M. I generally use Suri alpaca fiber which I think doesn't shrink as much as other fibers. So please keep that in mind and adjust the resist pattern size. Hope this helps a bit- I've done it mostly through trial and error :) Good luck and thanks for asking!
