Just FYI, you can also get pleated washable sediment filters, which can be washed a few times and re-used. There are also cage filters, used by many breweries. They are back-flushable sediment filters so you can reverse flow and push it out a seperate flushing port.. Those cage filters are made by companies like Synopex.

Hi, I’ve been filtering beer through a 1 micron filter for about half a year now, and the beer is already carbonated. What can I say, it filters differently from the yeast cell, but it allows the malt cell to pass through, and after settling for about two weeks, malt sediment appears. You need to use a 0.5 micron filter or less if available.

On corny kegging day. I use this filter with 0.5 micron pleated filter and close transfer. by pushing it through with about 5psi of Co2. And put 3 kegs through it . Then back wash it the same as you. And store it out of sunlight with VWP solution until next keg day. forward rince it and use it again. I replace the filter after 6 kegging cycles, so after about it's filtered about 340 litres . The biggest pain is it falling over.

That sounds like a good procedure. I was always nervous about re-using the filter media, but I know a lot of people do it. Someone needs to invent a little stand for this to sit in. A 3d print would be cool!

It works laying down too. I have one of these and just let it rest on the table sideways.

How about you build a support system wouldn’t take much

Funny you should mention that, I used this yesterday as a course filter on my pilot batch and got so frustrated with it falling over that Chris and I started talking about a design. We are thinking about using wood and sealing it really good. I'll do another video when we build it...

when is the best time to filter the beer? I am a homebrew so it fermenter to corn keg for most beers I make. Or do I keg it cold crash it and then filter🙄

If you are fermenting from a brew bucket or carboy and have the ability to cold crash it like putting the whole thing in a fridge that is best. Then rack it into a keg and filter from one keg to the next keg. If you don't have the ability to cold crash, you may want to rack into a carboy first to give it time to clear and then into keg for a keg to keg filter. I hope this helps.

Cold crashing and filtering is very different. Cold crashing helps drop the yeast out of suspension but it will not remove everything. There is many different reasons for filtering. Depending on the type of pads you use, you can get a nice clear beer fast without the long wait or even a sterile filtration removing everything making it safe to add flavorings containing sugar or sweeteners without the risk of re-fermentation. If you are making hard seltzer, filtration is a must. If you are a homebrewer and have plenty of time to wait, you probably don't need to filter in most cases.
