Fantastic technique. It worked like a charm. One big Caveat; many systems leave a common point on a twisted wire section until the main outer loop is encountered. The twisting imparts a weaker but detectable signal to the other side of the open loop. One side as you mention you can walk up right. The other is there but much closer to the ground ; it faked me out. I used recycled solid core Romex for my connection. I took one conductor out of the crappy 16 gauge Romex, wound it four times around my generator’s spark plug wire and connected it to my powered down invisible fence loop. I found the breaks easily, after spotting how much stronger the spark plug generated signal was on one side of the break and the other. The signal only disappeared in an isolated part ( two breaks! ), strong all around from the connection side, weaker on the other side (the side with the twisted wire induced signal) and absent in the isolated segment. Definitely worth a donation!

Thank you so much for this! I bought a AM/FM handheld radio for 8 bucks, and I used a weed eater as the signal source. It worked like a charm! The break was where a vehicle ran over the line and a sharp underground rock pressed against the wire causing a break. I would have never found it without having to replace the whole line! You saved me some serious time and money! Thanks again! The only thing I would add is running the signal source through the line from both directions to really zero in on where the break is.

For those of you who don't want to use a lawnmower: I had 1,000 feet of wire and locating the break was easier for me. That is because I was able to leave the transmitter plugged in. I used an old AM radio with a broken antenna to scan for a break, set on about 530 channel. I simply followed where the invisible line was underground, you will hear the static. When the static stopped, that was where the break was. It worked like a charm. Thanks for your video. For those curious about how long it’ll transmit the frequency, I had no issue on clarity of the signal At 2200’-2500’. Many thanks! This worked beautifully. Oddly enough, even though the line was broken, there was still signal throughout the whole fence. Maybe because wire ends were touching each other a little bit -- enough to keep signal going from spark plug but not enough to prevent the fence's transmitter from going into "System Failure" and "Break" mode. Your video said the static would go away completely when the radio was right above the wire. What we found was that a signal got louder and faster the closer we got to the intact wire. We found the break when the signal went from very strong to definitely weak. It was the change in signal that alerted us. WE dug and sure enough, found a break. So, thank you again! Oh, and tuning to 530 was perfect. Again, thank you.

No problem, Kyle. I had it near 540 on the radio and just left the weed eater idling. It definitely sounded different than your example and didn’t go silent when over the top, but static got real quiet as I got away from the line and as soon as I crossed over the break.

Just finished and worked. I have 3 acres enclosed. I must say, it really helps if you know where the line is underground. I installed my fence about 8 years ago and had a general idea. I first “wanded” my entire fence. I noted one particular area, about 20 feet or so that had a much weaker signal (very noticeably weaker) than anywhere else along the fence. I dug until I found the fence (carefully) and continued along the line until I found the break, about 3’ from where I started digging. Spliced it and checked the operation of the collar. Back to normal. Thank you Kyle!

I found four more breaks in the afternoon. Your procedure was easy to set up. Wrap a wire around the spark plug wire and twist the other end onto one of the loop wires. We had a lot of utility crews digging in our yard last few weeks and also tree trimmers that accidentally cut the wires partially buried in the woods behind our house. Thanks for your video.

ROCK ON! This worked awesome and saved me from having to pay a technician or buy the wire-finder kit. I wrapped the fence wire right around the spark plug wire of my mower and headed out to find the break. It was a little difficult at first with my 1960s AM/FM radio that created a lot of background noise. But after tuning in and hearing the buzz, it wasn't bad. I have about 1.5 acre zoned off. The signal did get very weak about 2/3 way around the zone. I couldn't hear it to go further (probably partially because of my crappy radio). So I just dug it up where I last heard it and re-attached the mower wire at that midway point to continue the rest of the zone. Finally found the break. About 6 feet was ripped out of the ground, compliments of last summer's demolition crew removing a building from my property with an excavator! After all that work finding the break, my lovely wife finally confessed that she physically saw that portion ripped out last summer by the demo crew, but completely forgot and never told me! Ugghh!

This works! The AM radio will pick up a static/noisy signal when it is near the fence wire. I was able to trace one side of the loop for about 500 feet before the signal got too low to detect. To my amusement, when I traced the other side of the loop I discovered the broken wire sticking up out of the ground where some excavators had dug it up and cut it while working on my neighbors property. Using the lawnmower is a little inconvenient since it makes a lot of noise and can interfere with hearing the radio signal - nice is there was some easy way to generate the signal without the mower. A great poor man's way of diagnosing your fence!

I wonder if rigging it up to a car battery would do the same thing as a lawnmower just a lot quieter? There has to be something that can be quieter than the lawnmower.

@@JT-vj6id a very late reply here but you need an AC signal in the wire to create the radio signal in space. A car battery only provides a DC current, which won’t create the radio signal. Also, if you aren’t careful and you create a complete circuit you’ll fry the wire. Hope this helps someone!

Best and simplest way to do this. A lot of convoluted solutions out there on the web but this was the easiest and we found the break in no time. This should be the top rated video to fix breaks in a break fences and deserves a lot more views then just a couple thousand

Worked perfect with my John Deere 318 lawn tractor. Wrapped a section of 12 ga. invisible fence wire 4-5 times around the spark plug wire and spliced it in an easy to repair place. Tuned to AM530 and signal was clear as bell until I got to the break.

Wanted to say thanks for posting this video. We have a Petsafe fence and we were going to try the RF Choke method until we saw this video. Although we found that the problem was in the settings on the fence transmitter and there was no break in the fence wire. We wouldn't have figured this out though without this video and testing the fence with our mower and AM radio. We adjusted the setting on the transmitter and the fence is working fine for now. I'm not sure what exactly happened to the Transmitter itself but it has 3 settings and the fence no longer works on 1 of those settings. The other 2 settings are fine. Soooooo thanks again for posting this method. It saved us a lot of time and frustration.

Thank you for the video, worked like a charm. For those of you with a riding lawn mower / garden tractor, try using that. I have a Scag Cheetah zero turn mower, wrapped the wire around one of the spark plug wires and it worked perfectly. Thanks again Kyle!!

Worked for me. Thanks Kyle. A mole had chewed thru the wire. Poss helpful to others - I have a 1500 ft loop but I found my signal became faint at about 500 ft. So I dug up the original splices ( spaced at 500 ft) and repeated the procedure at each splice.

Roger Johnson this is the technique I used as well. I found it was actually faster than messing with a faint signal over such a long run.

Thanks for posting this! Going to give this a try.. Currently using a petsmart wire break finder which is very poor at best.. I will say one of the big issues is the wire itself super amplfies all of the local stations and you really cant find an empty spot on the radio, plus trying to listen for the tone changes on the loop in the background of the radio stations.. Hooking one end to the mower makes more sense in finding the break to me.. will let you know how it goes.

Kyle 2 stroke ... I’m not sure of the exact frequency but it was down low on my am receiver... but not all the way down, if that makes sense
