Thank you for the video. This was so much easier to understand then the handout my teacher gave me.

That was a great explanation... I'm interested in Einstein, time dilation calculations and such. I wonder, is it possible to use an average velocity (as in your example) for a certain travelled distance and then use that in the time dilation equation as velocity for the moving object ? Then one could create a more real example with a rocket first accelerating, the just cruising in space, and then decelerating returning to earth, and calculate correct time dilation in Special Relativity for such an event (still excluding gravitational effects, which only are included in General Relativity).

But wouldn’t the area for the red be negative since it’s going backwards. And it’s velocity so you also have to put direction since it’s a vector quantity?
@rod7944
6 жыл бұрын
You are correct in that velocity is a vector. However in the time frame you are talking about the velocity is still positive, meaning the car is still moving in the same direction. Don't confuse decreasing velocity, with a negative velocity. The slope indicates how the velocity is changing, in this case it is decreasing. But the numerical values are still positive. Had the graph continued on past 14 seconds with the negative slope and had negative velocity values, that would indicate a change in sign for the velocity and therefore displacement in the other direction. Does that help?

wouldn't the average velocity at the end be the average speed, because velocity needs a direction right?
@rod7944
2 жыл бұрын
In this example, that is correct. the average speed and the average velocity have the same numerical value.

Why is it 6 seconds for the rectangle ??
@rod7944
6 жыл бұрын
Because the time starts at 5 seconds and ends at 11 seconds for that part of the graph. So, the rectangle part has a width of 6 seconds

Yea, you can use integration on these. In general, integration is about finding areas. Numerical methods for doing so rule the world outside of accademics. I tend to focus on numerical methods in all my courses, including the calculus based courses
