I hope you have better luck than I in making shavings in advance. Even when I vacuum sealed the bag, after a week or so the fatwood had lost it's "magic" of burning after a pass or two of a fero rod. Other people have reported the same results. Just make sure and try making shavings, let it set for a week or so and try lighting it before going on a trip. When left in stick form fatwood lasts for many years. A piece I have has been outside in the snow, rain, heat, etc. for 5 years and when I scrape some in a pile, one or two strikes with a fero rod and I have flame. I just keep a few sticks with me. Thanks for a well done video, and keep on hunting!

You canbuy it at Lowe's, Home Depot, even Walmart. $4 for 5 lbs. and it is processed into sticks. It works just as good as any found in the wild. Look in the fireplace aisle at the store.

I've seen videos where they say the fatwood is near the base (stump area) of the tree, but I found it half way up a tree in the core of the trunk of a tree that fell over in a big storm over a year ago.

My friend u are exactly right , the tree does protect itself from insects and fungi with sap (terpene), why else would the tree produce this compound to the damaged area. Trees are smarter than we understand, study the venus flytrap plant then i bet u will agree. Thanks for the video. Also did u know pine needle tea has the complete vitamin c complex and has 4 times the amount of vit. C than an orange? Great tree.

I like that... _"Shut up bird! Shut up!"_ Hey... I talk the the animals, birds, etc. Keeps me sane and feeling like someone is there. I have a camp not far in the woods by my place where there's a grouse that shows up most visits. She likes bugging me a little, so to do my work, I have a stick with roots on it (looks like a claw) to keep her pushed back, so she won't lunge at me. She does eventually go away from me to eat and take care of her feathers, etc, then finally leaves the area. I do talk to here as if she's a person. Helps keep me calm and not go insane. Keeping her pushed back and talking to her helps me avoid killing her. She is a beauty and almost like having a friend around to keep me company.
