I've always been a big advocate for the vast majority of people sticking to passive investing because they either can't handle volatility so panic and sell at terrible times or don't know enough about business in general or can't be bothered to learn about doing valuations. I have a mixed portfolio of growth companies, dividend payers and market ETFs. Whenever I sell a position at a profit I put half into the passive ETF without fail. I must have done this hundreds of times. This provides an easy way to average down during market crashes (just buy the ETF) and creates some stability in overall performance regardless of how risky my other positions are. Of the remaining cash 10% gets added to my "free cash for AMAZING deal buying" then the rest usually gets invested fairly quickly into other holdings that are a good value or sometimes a new position. I can do this because I have broad interests, follow business cycles, so far have had solid long term trend predictions and have an iron stomach to get through volatility. It doesn't phase me at all. I've been down 60% on some positions following disastrous news like key management dying, major deals collapsing and of course market or industry crashes but because my original thesis didn't change I was happy to average down or in some cases deploy my spare "major bargain" cash. I don't know a single other person that is anywhere near as calm as me when it comes to volatility and it's quite disappointing seeing so many dabble with managing their own investing but barely learning enough to even understand what the companies they're buying do, let alone if the valuation is reasonable. I don't expect people to put the same effort in that I have but I had hoped that most people would be sensible and realistic enough to just buy funds instead of actively managing. Sadly for the people I know at least I was wrong and they only learn after taking a major loss from an easily avoidable mistake.

Excellent comment, thank you for sharing your methodology! Maybe the best takeaway here is that someone with a method applies it consistently across time and that it's working for them. You have strong convictions which means you're not easily swayed by whatever the talking heads are rambling on about. You're right. Most people will be better off engaging in passive ETF investing and they'll do quite well over time doing so. Those who choose to manage their own money need to have a methodology that manages risk and preserves wealth in addition to growing it.

its all very easy to say time in the market but some of us don't have 30/40 years to be invested in the market

You can take the same approach and have meaningful impact in 10 or 20 years. Trying to shortcut wealth creation is a recipe for disaster.

Yep, good catch, the good mic I usually use wasn't working, and the audio was accidentally recorded using a Lenovo laptop mic. I was on a time crunch, and on a roll with the spiel, so I decided to post anyway. Expect the better quality recordings going forward ;) Joe P.

The fang stocks honestly not good to invest long term, tesla profits is growing well but good video.
Really appreciate that! It's a function of experience (getting punished by the markets in the early days and learning lessons) and also lots of research over the years that culminated in our overall offering.

Didn't you just add $VFC this year?

No, we were holding VFC for quite a long time and sold once they cut that dividend. We talked about it before in a previous video when we were worried that the high yield may be a indicator of a problem. It was: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wKWtxY1njnWBo34
