Thank you. Had a similar problem in the US, but couldn't find anyone with traditional skills, nor could I find anyone at a supply shop with a solution... they're just all too young to have learned properly -- they can do easy new stuff, but nothing that requires higher skills and knowledge.

Thanks Al. That was a really good lesson. In the motor trade, I'm used to laying PTFE tape around a thread but you make it into string and pack it around the olive. That was useful. And, you'll never regret buying a tool, you'll always regret losing one! Take care.

Great video! You explain things very clearly. I needed to join 22mm into an old fitting in my bathroom whilst replacing my bathroom suite. Fortunately for me I'm a toolmaker by trade and was able to make a tool like the one you demonstrate for compressing 22mm down to fit into the old fitting. It saved me loads of time as my only other option was to pull up floorboards (which run under a wall into the next room 🤯) and solder 3/4 to 22mm fitting. The tool works grand with a 3/4 olive 👍 Shame you can't buy them anymore. Would love to know more about old plumbing techniques/ tools etc? Love your KZitem channel. Jase

thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge dereton33. I just assumed I had 22mm until it wouldn't fit in the old imperial compressions. I found wickes did a solder fit 22 to 3/4 for £1.50. You can get 3/4 inch olives as well. Don't get the 22 to 3/4 compression because the 3/4 end refers to the thread and the internal diameter is smaller than 3/4 inch

Hi captain , you will have reduced the thickness of copper going into the fitting , so it may be ok now but after a couple of years that mains pressure will start a leak where the pipe wall is thin. So I would not recommend it , best get the correct fitting. Kind regards, al.

I'm in the US still using imperial. I got an outdoor 1/2" pipe (OD 5/8 or 15.875mm) but got frozen at sometime, now the OD expands to 18mm which won't go in a standard imperial bibb. I'm buying a compression adapter which accommodates 5/8" pipe (OD 3/4" or 19.05mm). I hope the 19mm ferrule can work on my 18mm pipe using your method. Will let you know how it comes out.

Imperial metric sockets do not cost a couple of pennies all plumbing fittings are expensive , this video is mainly about an old tool that can compress 22 mm copper pipe down to fit inside a 3/4 imperial fitting you cannot get a socket for that. Also you cannot buy imperial olives and lastly boss white and hemp has been used on water services for more than 60 years and if you do not want a leak it`s still better than PTFE tape. You missed the whole point of this video .

dereton33 completely agree mate i still use boss white and hemp for everything . Lasts forever. Ptfe has not had the test of time yet but its not uncommon now to see it hanging out of packing glands on stopcocks and other poorly made joints. Youngsters wouldent want to get it under there nails now.

You have not put the price of these fittings. (do you happen to know the price to help other diy and plumbers out) I thank you for finding them , but the point of the video is still about fitting 22mm pipe into a 3/4 pipe fitting without the use of those sockets by using the tool in the video . any way David thanks for your codes on the sockets I am sure they will help people out and also the imperial olives. So thanks again for your input. Kind regards, al.

Hi Dereton, what would you make of getting a 22mm pipe to fit on a 3/4 fitting by rubbing the end with wet/dry paper for about the first half inch of the pipe so that will reduce its diameter and will therefore fit inside, I done this and used 22mm olives on the 22m pipe and it all seems well so far, iam no plumber just a spark, its also on mains supply, do you think I will have risked weaking the pipe any by doing this?

You can't ALWAYS get a 15mm fitting to fit on an old copper 1/2'' pipe. Had one recently that was in a 1930s house that had such thick edges it was unbelievable. I know it's quite unlikely you will come across one like this, but there was no way a 15mm coupler or cap end etc was going on it. Even a compression fitting wouldn't go on. The nearby 90 degree bends were made of brass, so it must have been way old.

Got a job coming up that will require joining new 22mm pipe to old 3/4" and thought to myself: this would be a great subject for dereton33, in fact I bet he already did one! And here I am. Thanks for this. I was expecting you to recommend 3/4" olives and new compression fittings, is there any reason why not? Also, that pipe compression tool: if it isn't available it looks perfect for 3D printing.

Is there enough of a difference between the 3/4" and the 22mm pipe that one will slip inside the other so that you can solder it directly? If not, you could probably slightly expand one of them so that they would fit together better and then solder that.

@@dereton33 -- I tried to look up the specifications for 3/4" Imperial copper pipe and metric copper pipe, but I found conflicting specifications -- apparently one of the 3/4" Imperials that I stumbled across was Australian and the other might have been UK. And, of course there is the US 3/4" "nominal" pipe sizes... We all use the same name for different sizes... It looks like the 3/4" Imperial in the UK is 0.846" OD (21.4884mm)... I couldn't find the actual ID of the pipe though... One site seemed to imply that the ID would the named size of the pipe (i.e 3/4" or 0.750"), but I did not see that confirmed on other sites, so I'm not sure... In Australia, it appears that 3/4" pipe has an OD of 0.750" and an ID of 0.638". In the US, 3/4" is 0.875" (22.225mm) OD and 0.745" (18.923mm) ID. Metric 22mm copper appears to be 22mm OD with a wall thickness of 0.9mm for "Table X" pipe, thus 20.2mm ID. So, it looked like it might be pretty close and would take a minimal amount of expanding to get a tight fit that should be solderable... Here in the US, there are tools that can be used to expand copper pipe that is the same diameter sufficiently to fit over another pipe of that exact same size, so you do not need a coupling. The simplest is just a rod that is stepped in sizes with a gradual slope between each size and you swage the pipe to the new size: www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Professional-6-in-1-Swaging-Tool-80-538-111/304341669 Also tools like this, but it's more expensive: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qmip0oairoGkZaQ So, it *looks* like the metric would fit inside the 3/4" UK Imperial

You could always use a 22mm to 3/4 copper coupler and solder it in there. Though I have just recently had the success of soldering a 22mm outer onto the old 3/4 pipe when i didnt realise it ws 3/4. Stroke of luck or pure genius, who knows 🤷♂️
