Mark, two questions but first, thanks so much for yet another wonderful video! Would you say the Speedmaster is safe to swim with. I know a lot on the watch forums say not but you did a pressure test on this one and the crystal is a water resistant one. Also, for minor scuffs do you think polywatch is OK to use? I have several watches with plastic crystals. Thanks so much again for great videos, I am looking forward to your next.

I personally don't recommend any watch of significant value to be worn under water unless it is a certified divers watch. I do a pressure test to check for visible leaks and yes, this is an armoured glass which does provide a very good seal. Some of these speedmasters have a snap on back with a nylon seal (rather than rubber 'o' ring) - this seal should be replaced every service without compromise.

Watch Repair Channel Thanks Mark. I have the latest model Air King which I think is 100 meters water resistant, is it OK to swim with that? Mind, My Breitlings is 1000 meters so its not much of a problem if I can't! I am posting a link to your channel on the watch forum I belong to, I think they will find it really useful. thanks again.

I would not recommend any watch for wearing under water unless it's rated minimum 300m, screw down back, screw down crown. Less than 300 will likely be ok but I would worry too much.

Omega had to change their original engraving from "The only watch worn on the moon" after it was revealed that Bulova's Lunar Pilot was worn by Astronaut Dave Scott ... because his Omega SpeedMaster had blown its crystal clean off during a drive in the space buggy. You see, the Omega still had Earth atmospheric pressure inside it when Scott took it into the rarified moon atmosphere ... and the crystal couldn't stand the pressure differential. Years later, Bulova sued Omega and won the decision ... hence the new engraving "The first watch worn on the Moon". The current Bulova tribute "Lunar Pilot" has a more demure engraving on its case back paying tribute to Apollo 15 and its visit to the Apennine mountain range's Hadley Rille and gives the lunar coordinates in Lat and Lon. That's right, there's a complete mapping of the Moon with Lat and Lon, produced by the Americans! As it was also the first privately-owned watch worn on the surface of the Moon, Scott was able to sell it, complete with encrusted moon dust, for $1.6million! The Omega was returned to the factory by NASA for cleaning and repair under warranty. Great story!

Absolute bullocks. People had been buffing plexi crystals for past 50 years and had never 'burn through'. This is the internet where anyone can past nonsense information without responsibility. You change crystals not because buffing will burn through it, but because some scratches are too deep to buff out.
@DM-rc4yu

"Absolute bollocks" and yet you're saying the same thing as him. If you were to buff out those deep scratches you would eventually take off too much material. That's all buffing is after all.

Very good, More Pleas

Probably a bit late for a reply, but if you still need to realign your hands, pull the crown out while you press the upper pusher it should ajust the main chrono hand, and the bottom pusher should adjust the other, I do not own a Speedmaster but that works on the other Chronos I've tried, hope that helps - Enjoy your watch by the way! :)

How do you line it up so that the Omega logo on original plexiglass is facing upwards, as it near impossible to see? My OCD would be going crazy if it was ever so slightly out of alignment. 🙈 Also, I have asked a few on their comments but will ask here too. Polywatch would definitely help remove nasty scratches and scuffs, but I would be hesitant to use it, as Polywatch might also remove Omega logo on plexiglass? That is, if logo is on top of the plexiglass. It is an entirely different story if logo is underneath.

Great video but i felt that it was lacking in some regards. I noticed how you were very particular as to not touch the inside of the new crystal and to keep the inside of the new crystal facing down so that dust wouldn't get in it. It would have been great if you emphasized these points in your video. Also lubricating the crown and caseback seal would be a nice point to add. And for those interested it would likely be much easier and cheaper to polish the old crystal than to install a new one. (unless a mineral or sapphire crystal is being used)

great video! Could you please share your method of removing all dust and lint from an acrylic crystal before final assembly? I have A F Rub Off compound, and Zeiss lens wipes. I also have acrylic cleaning spray which is anti static. But do you recommend certain procedures?
@J.DeLaPoer
2 жыл бұрын
Blow the dust out from dial and/or crystal with bulb-type hand blower, not compressed air which can be too strong and damage hands etc. Then Rodico is your friend for getting any last stubborn or clingy bits off the dial or crystal (it removes fingerprints as well) and then final wipe with chamois cloth if needed. If you have a very old watch, the radium dust and other bits of crap that've been under there for many decades can be very sticky indeed. During changing I like to cover the exposed movement; lightly drape a plastic bag or even just invert a cup over it; whatever you prefer to keep any ambient dust off until the recasing. The crystal itself should be kept upright as much as possible to avoid any ambient dust entering the inner surfaces. Personally I prefer not to use sprays, just out of concern for allowing any possible residual moisture inside the sealed atmosphere of the watch.

Interesting! I've been using my press in a different way. It is a different sort of press but it uses dies, nylon ones, but otherwise much like yours. I've been putting the crystal in a larger, concave die in the bottom of the press, "dial" side up. Then I've selected a die for the piston that will fit through the bezel of the watch, put the bezel around the piston, pushed down on the crystal so that the edges compress slightly and just lowered the bezel on top of the crystal until I feel that it's in place. Release the tension on the crystal, the edges expand in the bezel and the crystal is in place. Would you say that there is an advantage to doing it your way or am I simply doing it wrong?

Thanks for your great videos. I have a question about so called tension ring. Is there a sapphire crystal part without tension ring? I've had an aquaterra quartz watch with case number 196.1115 which uses 062SB3084 for the front crystal but couldn't find anything about tension ring. Is it just included in replacement kit?
@pibblesnbits
10 жыл бұрын
I am not a watch expert but from my understanding the hesalite crystal in the video had a tension ring because it is essentialy plastic and very flexible. Sapphire and mineral crystals on the other hand are rigid and do not require a tension ring, although they do require a nylon gasket which is not reusable.
