I tried one boot with the cone. First thing I noticed the cone I used was way bigger secondly boot was so stiff it couldn’t go as easily demo in this clip. May be here used narrow cone and short length plus very flexible boot which won’t last longer compared to original boot quality. So you have to do again when it ruptures. No doubt procedure theme is awesome.

* Make sure you get the cone not too much bigger than the CV joint housing. * Make sure you don't buy a CV boot with thick and solid collar. Some CV boots come with thick collar and it is almost impossible to stretch it out that much

Make sure you order stretch CV boots. Standard ones don't stretch very well. Thanks for the video 🙂

Sometimes it's easier to take the whole drive shaft out from the vehicle, on VAG group cars it's possible to do this without undoing top or bottom ball joints, it's easily possible to change N/S and O/S outer driveshaft gaiters in one hour this way and in any case there's a knack to releasing the CV joint and re installing it, unless the whole assembly is directly in-line it won't happen, doing it like this on the bench also lessens the chance of dirt ingress into the CV joint.

I've not done one for ages but I seem to remember the drive shafts were held in the cv joint/hub with a spring clip and once undone it slides out easily minus the bulky cv joint and the boot is then simple to fit. A lot of them will come out of the gearbox end too without causing any damage to the seal as long as it's kept clean. I think demonstrations of things on a bench in a vice are pointless because if we had it like that we wouldn't need one of these.

if you take out the the driveshaft, you better replace the seal, and btw, the gearoil comes out on my car, so need to drain the gearbox as a start. So this method has a good advantage against the old removeing everything, install new circular-clip, as might that damage too, and that comes only in set, so then you end up buying a new driveshaft, and you could just not risk that, and put this thing on, without removing the shaft from gearbox

If you've got the whole shaft in the vice as in this example, you have removed it from the diff end anyway. Therefore if the type of car you have allows the gear oil to pour out the shaft hole, saying it's a bad idea is academic because this has already been done in this example. The point I was trying to make was that there are other ways of doing this and that most DIYers won't have the luxury of taking it all apart and doing this in the shop/garage. I was trying to get across that if you can avoid removing the shaft from the car as we used to back in the day it might make the job simpler quicker and without the need of a vice or any special tools. N.B. Removing the shaft from the diff is never a good idea unless you have to and replacing the seal is always best practice if you do. However it can be done without changing it as long as it hasn't become brittle with age and you're careful. I've never broken a circlip in one of these and even if I had it's a lot cheaper and easier to replace than diff seals, spigot nuts and all the other bits and pieces you risk damaging by removing the shaft.

got your points, yes if someone remove the driveshaft, and put in the vice, really loosing the advantages the screch type cv boot, as in that stage, already removed from the car. True! They should demonstrate with shaft still in the car. Did a cluch change on the car, and needed to remove the drive shaft, and then I put all together, only to dismantle again for that seal replacement in the gearbox, but at least went faster with a little practic. Thats right, hobby mechanics, dont remove the driveshaft to install the screchy boot in a vice, as it dont make any difference, easy to hummer down, and put back the cv joint, and 99% of the tie the circular clip will be ok to put back

My old Mercedes Benz doesn't allow the driveshaft to come apart unless one end is physically cut open and a new end is fitted .... I'll try the cone method.

The information in this video is wrong, why put the cv grease into the boot? What is that going to do? NOTHING.The grease should be packed into the actual joint so the ball bearings dont become dry and start to click when the car is being driven.
@barnseyfrommossley

+Ryan Flottemesch Centrifugal force ensures the grease moves around the cv joint and boot while driving, keeping the grease cool and ensuring the joint is well lubricated. As long as the joint and the boot are nearly full there is no problem.
@MrLoganF1

Centrifugal force will make some of the grease into the joint. When installing a new boot you should pack as much grease into the joint probally 2x of the small packs of grease you get with a boot. The excess will be thrown into the boot.
@koitorob

+stevieb19660 Centrifugal force would push grease outwards away from the joint. The correct way to pack a cv joint is to pack grease into the joint and rotate it ensuring all parts are packed.The actual joint requires lubricating, not the inside of the cone!
@barnseyfrommossley
8 жыл бұрын
+Koito rob Yes, the grease is thrown out into the boot. If the boot is empty the grease will stay there, if it is full, as in this demo, the grease already in the boot will be forced into the joint ensuring a supply of cool grease to lubricate and cool this high load part.
