Interesting that you said set back 37mm for the plate. I was sure Ikea used Blum and their pax wardrobes are only 27mm in.
@terrytowelling6212

Yes, they used to use Blum but they now sell their own branded 'Komplement ' hinges. The mounting plate for those sits 27mm back as you say. If you were using Pax carcasses and making your own doors, you'd need to drill new holes for the mounting plates if you decide to use Blum hinges.

I'm building my first cabinet. I am a new Festool user and so far everything is going as planned. Because I am new to cabinet building, I try everything on scrap before making my cuts. I am getting ready to bore the shelf pins and hinge screw holes. I have been pulling my hair out trying to understand the process of hinge install. This short video totally simplified the process. I feel I can go straight out to the garage set the hinges... but I live in Florida and its hot, so the next cooler day will be hinge day. I have 15 cabinets to make. Great video.

No - these aren’t - but the thickness does have to be within the spec of the hinge. If you’re looking for a hinge that’ll do a full overlay on a 2” frame, then I’m pretty sure you’ll be out of luck - as always though, check the specs of the hinges you’re planning to use. 👍👍

How does the door move up/down when you adjust only one hinge? Surely you need to unlock the other hinges first to enable the door to move? Or do the hinges not lock? What spacing between each hinge is recommended? 250-300-350 or ? (On large tall doors) Recommendations on how close can you place them to shelves? Also, when you fit them and put the door on, do you clip the top and work your way down or from middle out? If you need to adjust them, do you start at the top and unlock the others first?

Can’t tell from the video of course, but I bought both and was a bit confused. The 1mm difference can be adjusted with the hinges built in adjustment easy enough, but I find it odd they arn’t both the same. hi pete just using your video for reference for adding some of these hinges to a cad drawing and found it a struggle till i watched this video, very informative, but one thing i noticed was you said the fixing holes for the boss are 32mm apart also the fixing plate holes are 32mm apart but the holes for the boss are wider than the 35mm hole as is visibly obvious at 1:51, i feel like such a dick pointing this out but after some checking at some diagrams ect. i think they are supposed to be 45mm apart for the boss and 32mm for the fixing plate. ive ordered some blum hinges and will make a test piece to see if my calculations are correct before using them on a finished piece. but apart from that minor oversight the video was a massive help, and youve sold me on blum hinges, soft close for sure. sorry for being a dick and keep up the good work love watching your videos, how are you getting on with your cnc machine btw

Hi Peter. I’m just in the process of making some faker style cabinet doors for my parents kitchen. I knocked up a mock door and fitted a concealed hinge, however I wasn’t keen on the grab of the screw in the mdf. Previously I’ve made faker doors for my campervan which was a base of 9mm plywood with an mdf outer frame so the screws had a good grab in the ply, however I’m a bit concerned with the mdf and their ability to take these shirt fat little screws to hold the hinge. Any recommendations or words of advice “ thanks
@10MinuteWorkshop
2 жыл бұрын
The trouble with faker-shaker doors is that you’re wholly reliant on the glue bond between the backing board and the mock rails & stiles. There’s generally no issue with getting a good fixing in MDF with concealed hinges as much of their strength comes from the hinge body being well located in the cup you drilled out; if I wasn’t using euro screws I always used a 14 or 16mm x 4mm screw with a fairly coarse thread, and I’ve never had one fail. Very informative video. Thank you. One question...when drilling the door for the hinge cup you offset 22.5mm from edge so your "bore distance" is 5mm. Looking at the spec sheet for 71B3550 this means your overlay is 16mm (assuming plate height "H" is 0mm). Is that correct? But it looks like you are using 3/4" (19mm) stock for door and cabinet so wouldn't you want a bore distance of 7mm which would place center of 35mm hole at 24.5mm? Stating your overlay amount and thickness of material would help clarify.

I love your channel. I know this is from an old video. I am adding 13 mm wood to cover up existing ugly 20 mm doors under a kitchen sink (for my bowls club). One pair of doors is "inset" and for the other pair I would like to have a full overlay of just the 13 mm added layer (so 20 mm of door inset behind this). For the inset doorw do I need a special hinge for a thick door like this? Or do I just use a regular inset hinge and just push back the mounting plate? At about 10:25 in the video you seem to show how the mounting jig is not usable when a thicker door is used. For the full overlay of the 13 mm added wood (backed with 20 mm existing door) what hinge is needed there, or any advice on the mounting? I am looking for YT videos for help, but my situation is somewhat unique. I have never dealt with hinges in the past and the large array of hinges from the vendors (the 125 pages you mention) are overwhelming. Much thanks in advance if you can help me in anyway.

You’ll need a thick door hinge for that - 20mm + 13mm - but even the Blum 71B9550 only goes to 32mm afaik. There are some hinges for up to 40mm thick doors, but I’ve never used them. Best bet is to search for ‘concealed hinge for thick doors’. HTH. P 👍

Hi Chris. I don't think I can link to it directly, but page 97 of the Blum catalogue ahas all the info you need - publications.blum.com/2018/catalogue/en/97/#zoom=z. Cam here again. I made a practice door and side piece and I cant get the full overlay even with the adjustment. Can I drill the hole for the cup a few mm further back from the edge? In looking at this adjustment it seems if the cup were further inset on the door I would get the extra coverage. This is a Hafele brand full overlay hinge. I purchased their template for drilling the holes and the center is 21.2 mm from the edge. That leaves a 3.2 mm strip between the cup and the edge of the door. The practice door is 22.6 mm thick and the practice carcass piece is 19 mm. The instructions that came with the hinge was awful, it doesn't give any dimensions. I can practice on my door (move the hinge location) and will try this but wondered if you had and experience or advice.

Well done video on basic concealed hinge installation. I have one suggestion - You should be using a “Pozi-drive” screw driver, (Phillips screws with little tick marks ) “Pozi- screws” will work with a phillips screwdriver but will have a loose fit. A “Pozi-driver” will have a much tighter fit and doesn’t deform the edges of the screw head. Blum does sell Pozi-drivers. Cheers

Interesting video but seems to take place in a different universe to the one I occupy. Attempting to fit the first door on a Howdens kitchen cabinet for an office, with the holes already in place, I observe the following: 1) The arrow on the cabinet side of the hing is (excuse the pun) 'pointless'. Either you have done it before and know which way to put it; or you haven't, in which case you don't know whether the arrow points into the cabinet or out of it; 2) Your door Peter simply clicks into place in a second. Why does this never happen for me? I have spent what must be 20 minutes trying to get the first of 2 hinges to attach. It simply refused to lock into place, whatever I tried and however hard I tried to force it. The door side of the hinge seemed to be too short. Afraid that I might lose my rag altogether an smash the whole thing up with a sledge hammer I had to take a break and spend my time constructively doing something else while I calmed down. This kind of task, as so many others, seems way more complicated and fraught than it ever should be; mainly, I suspect, due to imprecise design and manufacture. Am I the only one in this universe rather than yours?

Well, the point of this video was to reach the folks in that alternative universe - hence the explanation of the arrow pointing outwards. As for it looking ‘easy’ to clip on the hinges, as I say in the vid I’ve had some practise as I’ve fitted thousands of these over the last ~20 years. 👍👍

i was just trying to create a simple cabinet, using concealed hinges. I wasn't able to hear the 22,5 center dimension well enough. Thought it was refered to as 20,5. I did some fast online search and i saw mentions of 20,5 and 21,5 so i decided to just follow a middle line and went for the 21,5mm center. the thing is that after installing everything i end up with a small gap on the hinges side of the cabinets door, which is beyond repair through hinge adjusting screws. So i ended up thinking that either different brands of hinges use different dimensions (i didn't use blum ones)which i don;t really thing is the case, or that it also depends on the thickness of the material. I used all around 18milimeter osb. I think that if i had used 15 millimeter board for the sides, the final positioning would have been ok. I ll try to fill the holes with material and try redoing them i little bit further inside and see if this works.

in the end, i bought some different concealed hinges which are suitable for the 18mm material. So the solution came with no filling holes, just hinges swap.

Is there any particular Blum mounting plate model you recommend using with the 71b3550 for the novice installer? Thank you from the US. You are a multi- national treasure.

Thanks! I typically use the standard Presses steel cruciform backplate ref. 173L8100. 👍👍

You have a new subscriber. Do you have a video about the push release latches.? I pretty well use blum everything. Are theirs good ones? When you install your hinges i am happy that you pre drill all of your screw doles. I hate the people who just jam a screw in the wood. Thanks again from “makin sawdust”

This is probably the best video I have seen on installing Euro hinges. It is best because it is succinct and especially because ot covers base plate installation which videos I have seen do not; they tell you how to install the hinge. However I want to know, does anyone happen to know what issues I may run into if ai install 5/8” doors on a 3/4” carcas? Or otherwise is there any reason I shouldn’t do that?

Thanks. The thickness of the door may cause two issues; one is warping or bowing - I switched to making doors in 22mm after 18mm doors bowed. And the other is having enough ‘meat’ in the door to take the hinges comfortably; hinges need a 13mm pocket, and 5/8” is barely 16mm. It’s do-able, but you need to be careful drilling out for the hinges. 👍👍

Hi I know this is an old video but hoping you still check it from time to time. My question is I have Blum soft close hinges but when you push the door they stop about six inches away from the carcass and don’t close. Are the hinges broken? Do they need to be replaced?

Yes, assuming there’s nothing else preventing the doors from closing, then almost certainly the hinges have some kind of issue. Blum hinges offer a lifetime warranty - contact Blum in your country to have them replaced. 👍

Why don’t the packs come with simple fitting instructions with measurements? I have a whole pile that came with no info. Also some hinges I have need rebating out on front edge, again was no info supplied. Frustrating.

As I think I say in the video, the Blum catalogue has many, many pages dedicated to these hinges, including fitting and adjustment, which is largely common across the brands. 👍

Hi Peter. Your videos have been invaluable during my cabinet build. What are the screws are you using in this video? I'm struggling to find any information on what screws to use with the Blum hinge.

Thanks Thomas! I usually use 4x16mm for the hinge plates, and 3.5x16 for the hinges themselves. If you're fitting these into a commercial cabinet that's used the 32mm system, then they'll probably expect you to be using Euro screws. I did have some really nice 4 x 14mm screws for the hinge plates from Ironmongery direct that were more like self-tappers, but they don't seem to do them anymore. 🤷♂️ 👍

Is that a Festool router in the background I see? Using this tool for drilling the pocket holes is much saver, accurate and more convenient than free hand drilling, especially when used in conjunction with the router fence.

My kitchen doors are in an old house and are inset with 5/16 overlay. Will the inset hinge work for these doors? Also my cabinet is a frame or can I only update with face mount hinges? Please advise. Thank you.
